Doris Mae?

LadyCurd · 19/11/2014 09:55

Me and DH came up with this name in the pub last night for our hypothetical 3rd and last. We both really like Doris and it fits in with our other DD's names, but then realised it sounds a bit like Doris Day! Mae would just be a middle name not a hypenated name so would it really matter? Or it is does can you suggest one syllable middle names that go with Doris? We already have a Bea.

I actually like Dorit, Tessa, Ivy, Violet, Edith but all vetoed by DH (though there is a glimpse of hope on Violet but one of our other DD's is also a flower name)

Basically think old lady names especially with an s sound in.
:)

(Hypothetical boy name is Alfred John)

Doris is absolutely awful. Doris Mae is even worse.

VoyagesOfAStarship · 19/11/2014 11:22

But maybe OP likes old lady names and doesn't give two hoots for what's fashionable?

Bowlersarm · 19/11/2014 11:23

Doris is terrible.

Dora?

squoosh · 19/11/2014 11:24

I'd rather be called Mae than Doris. I'd rather be called 'hey you' than Doris.

JeromeSqualor · 19/11/2014 11:25

yeh Doris is awful.
Of course I could be prejudiced - at my school near London in the late 70s 'a right Doris' was a regularly used insult, meaning dopey and frumpy

Gileswithachainsaw · 19/11/2014 11:27

I couldnt care less about fashionable either.

yes people should use a name genuine like but surely the kid is a consideration?

anything to ridiculous is going to be an embarrassment or be hated by the kid. Seriously, who could yell "DORIS" out in the park and keep a straight face.

Imagine the register at school aged ten.

Katy
hannah
Ryan
jack
Doris? ???

It's going to sound ridiculous

IgnoreMeEveryOtherReindeerDoes · 19/11/2014 11:31

To me it sounds like Doris Day but thats because I was a huge fan of her films as a child, yet my teen wouldn't associate it the same.

Got to admit I prefer May spelt that way.

I like name Doris

VoyagesOfAStarship · 19/11/2014 11:32

But Dorrie wouldn't sound odd.

There are kids now being called Maud, Myrtle, Ethel, Wilfrid etc. It might sound ridiculous to some of us but it will sound normal to them. Each generation of names has probably always sounded ridiculous to someone.

WD41 · 19/11/2014 11:33

There's so much wrong with it, sorry

Doris in itself is awful

Hyphenating is awful, Hyphenating with Mae worst of all

It rhymes with Doris Day

Please don't.

VoyagesOfAStarship · 19/11/2014 11:34

My kids both have unusual names - not old lady names, more just names no one has ever heard of. No one their own age bats an eyelid.

Bowlersarm · 19/11/2014 11:37

I don't think Doris 'fits' with your DD's names at all.

Poor little Doris would be always enviously looking up to her big sister Bea saying 'how come you got a pretty name and I didn't? What were mum and dad thinking when they decided to call me Doris? Confused'

AmeliaPeabody · 19/11/2014 11:38

I like Doris. Not so keen on the 'mae' spelling

Gileswithachainsaw · 19/11/2014 11:42

voyage

unusual is not always bad. I like many unusual names.

but all those names like myrtle maud, Ethel, Edna, etc are all awful too. forgetting the fact the y are granny names and you can't imagine a five year old answering to it they are just awful sounding names. They don't even look good written down. They are all so harsh and can't even imagine seeinh them. on a university application form tbh

IsabellaofFrance · 19/11/2014 11:49

Where do you like OP?

In these parts, Doris is a nickname for a woman, a bit like Sheila in Australia, which puts me off.

That and the fact that Doris is horrendous. Sorry.

RiverTam · 19/11/2014 11:49

I think Doris is actually a really pretty name. Not sure about Mae, May is better but don't really like it at all.

Castlemilk · 19/11/2014 13:16

Doris certainly doesn't fit with Bea!

Mae/May is THE ubiquitous middle name. It may have been nice once, but it's impossible to tell now. It's like white noise!

Personally it just sounds a bit boring. Doris is uber old-lady 'cool', but if you strip that away, it really is just a very short and fairly dull sound with no good nickname. Dodo?

So it's a no from me.

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/2237968-to-change-her-name-to-Doris

This link might be useful! Doris must be on the rise. There's an article in the link about a young woman who loves her name Doris.

I have an unfashionable name. When younger I wanted to be called Leticia and Tarabella. Everyone at my local comp had fantastically wonderful names.

Now I love my name.

Id love to be a Doris and a part of me wished I'd got my way calling one of my dds Doris. What's not to like? It starts with a strong sound, is unforgettable, rolls off the tongue, has great namesakes.

I do prefer the spelling May though but that's personal preference. I would also choose a less common middle name unless Mae is to honour a family member.

Doris Faye
Doris Wren
Doris Marina
Doris Christabel
Doris Ella
Doris Willow
Doris Rosalind

PS Don't listen to the Doris haters. Not everyone needs to have a really girlie, predictable name for fear of being shunned by society.

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 14:29

Dolly and Doe or Dorrie are potential nicknames

squoosh · 19/11/2014 14:32

Doesn't matter what you pair Doris with, it still sounds dumpy, lumpy and frumpy.

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 14:35

squoosh did something bad happen between you and Doris? Did she take the back of your ankles out with her mobility scooter before giving you some ultra violence with her walking stick (oh dear, we're back at baby Jane again aren't we?)

Sophisticatedknickers · 19/11/2014 14:36

I think Doris and Mae are both Marmite names...
I personally would give at least one name that is less 'loveitorhateit'.

burgatroyd · 19/11/2014 14:39

Sqoosh and if I remember correctly you like Blanche. I would have put Doris and Blanche in the same category myself.

Old lady names that aren't pleasant to my ears are Phyllis, Maud, Hilda, Doreen...

squoosh · 19/11/2014 14:41

I'm having such a visceral reaction to the name I think I must have been wronged by a Doris in a previous life! I remember when I was a nipper back in the 80's feeling so sorry for Doris from Five Star for being lumbered with that name.

You can see the sadness behind her eyes 'why oh why did they call me Doris, didn't they know I'd be in sequins one day'.

Doris Mae?
squoosh · 19/11/2014 14:43

I forgot about Baby Blanche! It's got a bit of swagger, whereas Doris is just a thick-ankled porridge stirrer.

I agre with you on Phyllis, Maud, Hilda, Doreen - all totally hideous.

Notso · 19/11/2014 14:48

Doris is fine but Mae is every baby girls middle name it seems. It a shame because it's a family name for us but it seems so boring now.
