Scruples question - stealing baby names???

hello - just a little scruples question for everyone.

When my BF and I were both pregnant I said very early on which name I would choose if I had a girl.
Its quite unusal so not one that would quickly spring to mind.
Anyway few months later BF rang rather sheeplishly and announced that her and her DH had decided that they really liked it and it was now their favourite.
Few weeks later they had a girl and did give her this name.
As it happens I had boys so wasnt that much of an issue (and apart from this she is a wonderful friend so would never want something like that to ruin our relationship)BUT have to admit I did think it was a bit odd and nothing that I would have done.

Anyone else done something similar - or if it happened to you would you be a bit miffed????

As I say its all water under the bridge but my sister just brought it up in conversation at the weekend when she joked about it.

hohoho, SP!

Bozza · 14/04/2004 21:07

JanH - alas your advice is too late for me. Because we had already chosen the name when DH's cousin named her son but not told anyone.... Your list includes DH's name which we would not have. And also some which I like/would be happy to use but the problem is getting DH to agree. Also think name has to fit with DS's which is Benjamin.

Bozza · 14/04/2004 21:08

Anyway Samuel is Biblical.

Posey · 14/04/2004 21:10

My sister and I were pregnant at the same time and discussed names endlessly.
Girls were not a problem, we both had firm and different ideas.
For boys, she liked my dh's name but thought we would use it as it is traditional in his family for the son to be given that name. But we'd already decided it would be our ds's middle name so they could "have" it.
When our ds was born (first) we kind of stumbled on his name, only to be informed that it was the name my sis had chosen for her baby's middle name. She was a bit miffed, but I really hadn't heard her mention that name before. I reckon it would've been funny, the only boys born in the family for years with the same names but in reverse order, but they went with their 2nd choice. All water under the bridge now though.

the problem with going public with your names in advance is that people feel there is nothing wrong with slagging your names off (or talking about horrible people they have known with that name)- and it is really hard then to rise above that and call your baby it. Neither my mother, or my mil held back their opinions on our names (then again, my mil did want me to call dd after her - Carole, which wasn't really on my list)

hoxtonchick · 14/04/2004 21:21

janh, my ds=max leo!

gemilou · 14/04/2004 21:26

I was a bit miffed when pregnant sil was going to use same middle name for a boy as my ds1 (5) recently, but its ok cos bump turned out to be a girl

aloha · 14/04/2004 21:28

My ds was named Henry way before he was born. Not in a 'well we are thinking of Henry' way that lets stickybeaks put their oar in, but in a firm 'His name is xxxxx' way, which seemed in my case to prevent any negative comments whatsoever.

Bozza, Benjamin was one of Joseph's (multicoloured dreamcoat) brothers, along with 10 others, including Daniel, Simeon, Asher, Gad and my personal favourite, Zebulan. Now, I bet nobody would copy that one!

Janh · 14/04/2004 21:31

I wanted to call dd1 Charlotte, which was my grandma's name, shortened to Lottie, which was her nickname, but some fool we knew said "er, they'll call her Charlotte the Harlot", which I allowed to put me off...I still like Charlotte, and Lottie, and am cross that I listened.

Stick to your guns, girls. If anyone tries to slag off a name you really like and want, then rise above it, look down your noses and say "actually...." and then whatever you want to justify your choice, or else just that you don't care what they think, actually. If you like it, you go for it. (And if they argue, send them round to me!)

Janh - What superb taste in names you have

Janh · 14/04/2004 21:33

Simeon is nice, Bozza! Benjamin and Simeon? No?

musica · 14/04/2004 21:33

Daniel wasn't one of his brothers - he fought a lion! Joseph's brothers included Dan, but this is different (being pedantic) from Daniel - Daniel means 'God is my Judge', whereas Dan means 'Judge'.

There, pedantry over.

I like Issachar from those 12, there's also Reuben, Naphtali, Judah, Levi which could all be fairly unique!

aloha · 14/04/2004 21:33

Benjamin was Joseph's favourite brother. Joseph, is, IMO a very nice name. Better than Naphtali anyway. Though do like Rueben and Levi. Not crazy about Issachar. BTW Ds has a Joseph sticker book which we are both obsessed with

hoxtonchick · 14/04/2004 21:34

Levi's a lovely name. dp said too biblical though... ditto Noah.

MADDI · 14/04/2004 21:35

If we're talking biblical names, has abyone read The Red Tent?Fantastic book, read it now.

Blackduck · 14/04/2004 21:36

haven't read all this thread, so may be repeating someone else....I had it the other way - brother knew ds was a boy and so kept trying to get me to give him the name his second ds would have had had he had one (if you see what I mean...)

MADDI · 14/04/2004 21:36

Could put you off Joseph and his brothers though.

Jimjams · 14/04/2004 21:37

I like Joseph as well- but I'm not going to tell you which of mine is Joseph (only one person calls him Joe so far. All children under 3 and a hlaf call him Jo-fes which is very cute).

Jimjams · 14/04/2004 21:37

Red Tent is a FANTASTIC book!

Janh · 14/04/2004 21:39

I have a Joseph too, Jimjams. He was Joey when little and Joe now. I never seem to say Joseph cos he doesn't rhyme with anybody (unlike everybody else in our house.).

MADDI · 14/04/2004 21:41

Joseph lovely. And Jacob, Iwanted a Jacob but I have 2 Girls.

gemilou · 14/04/2004 21:42

I totally agree with jimjams, the red tent is the most fantastic book I have read in years

Jimjams · 14/04/2004 21:43

Joseph is a pretty common name isn't it? It was in the top ten in 1910 as well I thought he would be a Joe, but Joseph has stuck. Maybe because my other son's name has 2 syllables as well? (his name is less common- but getting more common every year).
