Which names do you IRRATIONALLY dislike?

This is not certainly not meant to be a "bitchy names thread". The emphasis is on the word IRRATIONAL. i.e. there are some names that are perfectly innocuous, lots of other people like them, I've known some lovely people with those names (so no obvious bad associations) BUT for some reason I've always disliked them. Would be interested in hearing anyone else's bugbear names!

ANNA - just too symmetrical, and (to my ears) smug and boring

LUCINDA - I like Lucy, but for some reason the "inda" really turns me off this name

Anything with "BELLE"on the end.Annabelle, Isabelle etc Pretty on paper, but I just don't like the sound for some reason

BEATRICE again irrational, but the combination of sounds just doesn't do it for me, it does the opposite of "trip off the tongue"

This is not meant to be in any way offensive. My 3 children have really "Marmite" names, and I don't mind at all that some people don't like them.
I just think everyone finds that certain sounds "jar" with them. Do others find this?

On a different note, the Baby Names topic is brilliant and I have been a long time lurker!

Emma Ella and all the cutesy Millie Molly sort of names.

juneau · 26/10/2014 17:12

Jayden, Kayden, Brayden - just yuck
Morag - sounds like hag
Esther - the s and th together just sounds clumsy
Alfie, Arthur and Archie - sound like old men
Melanie - I've never met a Melanie I like and it just sounds wet and insipid
Christine - I have no idea why I dislike this one, but I do
Ava, Amelie, Scarlett, Ruby, Ella, and Lily-May - mind-numbingly unoriginal

educationrocks1 · 26/10/2014 17:13

'Alice'.
She sounds too long suffering. The only man she ever loved was snatched from right under her nose. She wanted to become a nurse and travel, but instead spent all her years in the village working in her gran dad's thrift shop. She became guardian to her 6 siblings all under 10 when she was 25 and her parents tragically died. That's 'Alice'. Sad

I have no idea where this comes from, completely irrational.

juneau · 26/10/2014 17:13

And Millie, Tilly, Evie, Mollie, etc - ditto

MehsMum · 26/10/2014 17:14

Boys:
Barry (awful), Connor (awful), Nigel (wet), Timothy (wet)
Girls
Lauren (princessy, though I know a lovely one), Georgina (pretentious), Samantha (just awful), Shelby (vvv awful, the worst name ever)

JazzAnn
'I don't like anything that starts with a 'k'
Have never found a 'k' name that I like'

How about Keziah? One of my favourite ever names, along with Seth.
*Pronounced Kez-i-a, NOT Kez-igh-ah, which sounds moany.

MehsMum · 26/10/2014 17:16

PS And yy to registering a child with a diminutive rather than a 'proper', full name. Alfie, Abby, Jamie etc all seem to saddle a child with a baby name for life. Don't even like Meg or Molly: suck up Margaret or Mary and then use the nn.

AnathemaIsANiceNameForAGirl · 26/10/2014 17:27

Daniel
Oliver
Oscar
Johnathan with the extra 'h', looks wrong
Andrew
Neil

Kelly
Nicola
Louise
Ellie

startwig1982 · 26/10/2014 17:37

I can't bear the whole Jayden, Caidyn, Haydn brigade. Vile.

Plus I've never taught a nice Josh, nor has my DH.

deadwitchproject · 26/10/2014 17:39

I think a pp mentioned the same, but anything with an "ie" ending:

Kellie, Aflie, Maisie, Freddie, Jamie, Amelie etc.

Also Olive (cannot get over "on the buses" reference) and Violet (cannot see it written as anything other than violent). Completely irrational.

CruCru · 26/10/2014 18:23

Daniel
Samuel
Isaac
Christian
Adam
Benjamin
Fraser

Ellie / Ella / lily / milly / Tilly etc
Lisa
Amber
Charlotte
Michaela

CruCru · 26/10/2014 18:26

Louise
Jessica
Natasha
Anything - "bel / belle / Bella" - but part of this is the way it is pronounced in my hometown accent.

MrsPatMustard · 26/10/2014 18:31

I can't bear Nicholas. Nick is fine but Nicholas just screams 'pompous, wet, mummy's boy' in my head.

Tranquilitybaby · 26/10/2014 18:38

Phoebe - just don't like the way it reads.

Reggie - suits an old man or a dog

MrsPatMustard · 26/10/2014 18:41

Also Carmel. Looks like a mis-spelling of camel, or caramel. Stupid...

MissBeehiving · 26/10/2014 18:42

Alfie
Jayden, Kaiden etc
Tiannah
Layla
Tallulah
Ross
Donna

All irrational - apologies

fairyteepee · 26/10/2014 18:50

Amy
Kelly
Emma
Claire
Lorna
Jonathan
Kayleigh

AwesomeSuperTasty · 26/10/2014 19:03

Seth - sounds very slithery, reminds me of snakes and the Bible.

Irrational because one of my favourite fictional characters is Seth Bullock, the sheriff from 'Deadwood' series (swoon).

ItsGotBellsOn · 26/10/2014 19:13

Also strongly dislike Seth. Names with the 'th' sound in them just make me think of someone lisping.

Martha and Megan - wet. I'd HATE to be called either

maggiethemagpie · 26/10/2014 19:56

Louise. I've no idea why!

Alisvolatpropiis · 26/10/2014 19:58

Victoria.

Have met many and not liked a single one.

burgatroyd · 26/10/2014 20:09

Alice.

I don't like the name because I'm intimidated by it.

Alice is the pretty, leggy one with the pink furry pencil case and a eraser that smells of bubblegum.

Please Alice, can I borrow a highlighter? Grin

Schoolname · 26/10/2014 20:35

Bethany - it sounds unfinished and made up
Scarlett - just hideous
Zack - harsh Ugly and totally unoriginal, I know at least 30 of them

Squirm · 26/10/2014 22:59

Here goes...

Joshua
Caleb
Stanley
Reuben
Seth
Benjamin
Toby
Jamie
Alfie/Archie etc
Miles
Marcus
Lucas
Owen
Ethan
Lewis
And all the obvious Mason/Tyler/Jayden etc

Layla
Olivia
Millie/Molly etc
Scarlett
Maisie
Sophie
Annabelle
Darcey/Lacey etc
Paige/Demi etc
Catherine
Rachel
Miriam
Vivienne
Ingrid

I used to hate my name which is plain and classic, and love my Sister's which seemed much more unusual. I still like her name, but I get on okay with mine now (neither have been mentioned in this thread but I don't think I'd take offence if they were).

moxon I know, my mind works weird.

I don't like Simon either. I'm trying to think why. It sounds harsh and sour to me. Yes that's it. It just sounds unpleasant and harsh.

I'm surprised at the Alice hatred. It isn't a YES yes, name of mine but I do like it and I didn't know anybody didn't.

I don't like Xena. It's a family member's name, but to me it just seems a bit...Out there?

I don't like Edward either. Another childhood thing, I had a friend who I constantly called 'Headward'. I knew the word 'head' and had always been told to pronounce my 'H'.

Do you think sometimes we hate a name because the first person we knew called such name, wasn't a nice person or we had an issue with their name for some reason?
