Has anything ruined your DC's name?...

Just a bit of Friday fun... Our baby daughter is called Annabelle, forevermore to be associated with a horror film about a haunted doll... Thank you very much indeed Warner Brothers! So it got me thinking about other people whose child's name has been tainted by a film/book/vile celeb etc. There must be plenty of parents of Elsa/Annas out there cursing Frozen!!!...

Aw. It would make me sad if something really did ruin a name completely.

AugustRose · 17/10/2014 12:52

I had my 2nd daughter and called her Heidi - 4 weeks later Kerry Katona had a little girl and called her Heidi, I was pretty devastated. Thankfully it has never been mentioned to me and I still love the name.

wigglesrock · 17/10/2014 12:55

I have a 3 year old Anna, she thought it was great fun when Frozen came out, she thought she was the bees knees Smile. She was less impressed when her older sisters pronounced her name the way they do in the film, "it's not Arna its Anna" was a frequent holler in our house complete with obligatory foot stamp!

shakemysilliesout · 17/10/2014 13:08

The reviews for the Annabelle movie aren't so good-
Don't think it's going to be iconic horror stuff. I wouldn't worry.

Only1scoop · 17/10/2014 13:10

It's worked well for me for over 40 years Wink

Whatisaweekend · 17/10/2014 18:26

Years ago I met a little girl called Bianca - her mum was so pleased to have found something so unusual and also rather glam (think Jagger). Flash forward a couple of years to Ri'eeee yelling "Beeyan'aaah" across Walford.....must have stung a bit!!

Frikadellen · 17/10/2014 18:40

dd1 is Phoebe. The year before she was named Phoebe it was not on the top 100 list. year she was named it (feb birthday) it went on as highest riser due to Friends. (started in Uk the year before she was born)

NOW I loved friends. However it grated on me when people went " oh like in Friends" no actually she was named after JD Salingers "The Catcher in the Rye" Phoebe is the sister of the main char and he says she is " the coolest sister in the world" dh read this book age 14 and said then if he ever had a girl he wanted to call her Phoebe.

Even now it grates on me when people compare her name to Friends.

Additionally we often get queried why we picked a " common" name for her and not for the others.. " we didn't.. we picked a name not in top 100 for all of our children,.

Luckily I still think Phoebe is a gorgeous name, and dd1 likes it too so not a huge issue. just an annoyance.

AuntyDiluvian · 17/10/2014 18:43

I overheard a dad talking to his daughter at the weekend... Her name was Isis.
A very pretty name and will be fine again in future I'm sure, but unfortunate in 2014.

m0therofdragons · 17/10/2014 18:45

We have a kitty. Just after she was born was the kitty on x factor who was rather odd. luckily nobody remembers her now.

CalpolOnToast · 17/10/2014 18:48

Celebrity Big Brother was a downer for us, especially as I'd originally vetoed the name because of Mr Egan

babyblabber · 17/10/2014 18:56

Annabel is on our list for this bump and I admit to having a wobble when I saw the poster for the movie! Think it'll be quickly forgotten though.

DS is Noah. We're in Ireland and it was around number 58 in the top 100 when we chose it, had never met one or even heard of one apart from on TV. Originality was a huge factor in picking it and we used to get amazing comments about how lovely and unusual it was when he was a baby. I loved when people asked his name when we were out and about with the pram, was very proud of myself!

It exploded the year after he was born and is now commonly heard in the park. Number 10 on the list now. I still adore it but it does really annoy me how common it is now.

Tobagostreet · 17/10/2014 19:07

Don't think the movie Annabelle will be a long enduring classic which people will particularly remember, so you're OK there.

Isn't there a lovely doll called Baby Annabelle?

Either way, it's a lovely name.

A certain annoying fucker of a meerkat however, has ruined my totally awesome DS2's name Angry

neverletgojack · 17/10/2014 19:07

Dominic the donkey song came out the year after my son was born.

Was gutted a bit haha

teacherwith2kids · 17/10/2014 19:09

We omitted to notice that DD's first name + surname morphs very easily into a line from a well-known song.

Ooops.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 17/10/2014 19:13

Yes it is very annoying when your unusual name suddenly becomes very popular.

Well I have never met another Dominic:)
Not an unusual name just under appreciated Wink

HappyCria · 17/10/2014 19:31

We chose ds name (Dylan) because we liked it without realising just how popular it is. Now if we are ever out and about there is always a parent yelling Dylan.

Like AugustRose kerry katona has also ruined it slightly by calling her latest daughter Dylan.

CaptainAnkles · 17/10/2014 19:33

Yes. The fact that there are so many children called it nowadays even though at the time I had only heard of about two people called it Sad

Aherdofmims · 17/10/2014 22:54

Finding out an ex bf had a son with same name as mine was annoying! Didn't ruin it though.

My mum's choice of baby name for db was ruined for her by Charles and Diana picking the same name a couple of years later! We are all republicans but the age gap is so small (and db still has hair) that it looks like it might have been the other way round.

liquidstatehasrisenagain · 18/10/2014 02:07

Only by some posters on mumsnet declaring it boring when an OP was trying to decide on a shortlist of simple classic names Hmm. I was pregnant at the time and it was also on my shortlist.

I ignored them and called DD it anyhow Grin

Strokethefurrywall · 18/10/2014 03:37

FFS - Dylan was our no.1 girls name and now sodding kerry Katona has gone and ruined it.

I don't even live in the UK but I'm still not ever going to be able to use it.

Eminybob · 18/10/2014 03:41

It doesn't ruin it for me, but a lot of poster on here say they wouldn't use Madeleine because of the McCanns.

TheWholeOfTheSpook · 18/10/2014 04:03

Mumsnet has ruined my DDs name! It didn't even feature in the name charts when she was born and then, 5 years later, BOOM! But people on here are HORRIBLE about the name nowadays.

Actually, that's not true. I still love my DD's name. It suits her and was a name I loved from when I was 8!

nooka · 18/10/2014 05:44

My ds is an Alfred. Named after Alfred the Great (dh studied dark ages history and liked the idea of picking the only 'the Great' England has ever had). It was the beginning of the old men/old lady fashion in names but not particularly popular and then Alfie was used for an EastEnder baby and they were everywhere. Top ten for at least the last 10 years, and with fairly dodgy associations. Not what I had in mind!

However it's almost unknown where we live now, so hasn't been an issue.
