Has anything ruined your DC's name?...

Just a bit of Friday fun... Our baby daughter is called Annabelle, forevermore to be associated with a horror film about a haunted doll... Thank you very much indeed Warner Brothers! So it got me thinking about other people whose child's name has been tainted by a film/book/vile celeb etc. There must be plenty of parents of Elsa/Annas out there cursing Frozen!!!...

Oh and Annabelle to me will always be that terrible doll that made sucking noises even with her batteries removed!

Wonc · 18/10/2014 06:33

A friend named her son Preston.

A few months later the Preston Pig cartoon came out.

IWannaHoldYourHand · 18/10/2014 11:24

All the parents of young children around here seem incapable of saying ds2's name without putting on a Peppa Pig voice and whining 'It's baby Alexander'.

Just.

Fuck.

Off.

bealos · 18/10/2014 12:52

My son is called Harper (he's nearly 9).

Then the Beckham's went and named their daughter Harper...

Apart from during the brief media storm at the time of her birth, no one has mentioned it since though.

ShadowStar · 18/10/2014 14:10

There's a little girl called Isis at the DC's nursery.

That's very unfortunate given recent current events, I think that name's been ruined.

WobbilyFang · 18/10/2014 18:12

I'm a tad worried that I will name DC2 the same as WillandKate2. Probably will be born about 4 months apart so there's not much I can do!
I can envisage the rest of my child's life being asked 'Awww, did your parents name you after the prince/princess?'
'No I'm bloody older thah him/her!'

glittershoes · 18/10/2014 21:25

We named our son Rex in August 2012. In February 2013 Fearne Cotton named her son Rex as well. The following day someone asked me if we had copied Fearne. Yes, my 6 month old was named after a one day old.....

For the following month all I heard was 'Oh, like Fearne Cotton's baby?'

It hasn't ruined the name at all but that annoyed me a tad!

BonnieWeeJeannieMcCall · 18/10/2014 22:29

We used my maiden name as DS1's middle name. It was obviously a surname used as a middle name. Since then it's started to be used as a girl's first name and it's been described on MN as a chavvy girls' first name. Meh.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 18/10/2014 22:35

Orla fucking Kiely. No I didn't name DD after some women who puts 70s leaves on everything.
When I was in horrendous 3 day slow labour , the midwife asked if it was after Ola Jordan from Strictly . Cue name panic fuelled by gas and air !

Chottie · 19/10/2014 05:49

Names do go in and out of fashion.

Both my DC are in their 30s. I gave them names which were not widely used at the time, but now their names regularly feature in the top 10 year after year......

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 19/10/2014 06:39

MN tried their hardest to ruin the name, by insisting that no-one at her Welsh-medium primary school or in her Welsh family would be able to pronounce her Welsh name (but using an English nickname would be ridiculous because you can't control nicknames dontcha know)... oh and that everyone would call her Ceiling.

Not happened so far Grin

slackingoff · 20/10/2014 11:04

I have a Rory. I still adore his name and it really suits him - I wouldn't choose anything else as I'm perfectly happy with it. But...

When we chose it, we patted ourselves on the back - it's classic without being Old Man Name Twee, it was nicely outside the top 100 so not popular, but not a weird made up name either. Oh, we had cracked this naming business, we thought. Then when he was about a week or two old, we turned on the TV to watch the new series of Doctor Who...and the character of Rory was introduced. Cue big surge in popularity for the name and everyone saying "oh, is he named after Rory in Doctor Who?" NO HE IS EFFING WELL NOT.

LittleBairn · 20/10/2014 11:19

This is why it doesn't bother me when looking at names if they already have brand or tv show associations, because there is no guarantee a brand isn't going to use the name at some point.

BackforGood · 20/10/2014 11:32

When I was at school I knew a Roxanne. Pretty unusual - I'd only ever met the one. Then The Police brought out their song about Roxanne... the prostitute.

Best one ever though (maybe you have to be a certain age? I don't know how popular it stayed with younger people) was I vaguely knew (brother of a friend) a lad who was called Adrian Mole, and would have been in his teens when Sue Townsend Book 'Secret Diary of Adrian Mole aged 13 and 3/4' came out. I did feel very sorry for him - hardly predictable from his parents pov though! Grin

LoveVintage · 20/10/2014 11:41

Our DS2 has a fairly uncommon name, and when we chose it, had only known one person of that name, an American DH once flatshared with.

After he was born, MIL was speaking to someone she knows, told them DS' name and they told her that their daughter was called the name! I was gutted. Now they are both at the same school but about 4/5 years between them. Have since heard of it used as a girl's name but i think it is predominantly a boys name.

WatchCowspiracy · 20/10/2014 14:46

We liked Isis as a middle name if we had a girl a few years ago. We had a boy. Won't use it now.

I loved Phoenix too, but Scary Spice used it, so I wrote it off.

spiderlight · 20/10/2014 15:59

We have a little Rhidian. About six months after he was born, there was that guy Rhydian on X-Factor and for about two years everyone assumed that was why we'd chosen the name. We have never watched X-Factor in our lives - we just wanted a nice, unusual Welsh name that english DH and his family could pronounce. Very annoying!

aftereight · 20/10/2014 16:13

A very irritating, attention seeking celeb named her daughter the same as my DD. The name was very unusual. Now it is top 10, amd I think it will date horribly. I still love it, but I worry it will become pretty naff amd old hat in a few years Angry

Erinydwi · 20/10/2014 19:29

I've been planning to name my first daughter Isis since I was a teenager but I'm not sure it will ever be usable again now. :(

Pandora37 · 20/10/2014 19:36

I know a little Isis as well! I think she's about 5. I have wondered how her parents feel about the name now...very unfortunate.

Wonc Preston would make me think of Chantelle Houghton's ex husband, but then maybe I read too many celebrity magazines. I think the name shot up in popularity after he became famous (although he's now slunk back into obscurity).

LynetteScavo · 20/10/2014 19:37

Only choosing an unpopular name, which became really popular really quickly.

DS is the oldest person we know with his name, but when we were on holiday in the summer, the beach was full of little boys with his name.

Still love the name, though. Smile

DH was very careful about not choosing a name which had been ruined in some way - although DD does have a name mentioned in an obscure song by an 90's band...the only person who picked up on it was DH's friend, who's into the same band.

RockMummy · 20/10/2014 19:45

My DSs name appears on the list of naughty children that teachers are suposed to make judgements about before they join their class. I know this isn't true at primary but he goes to secondary next year. What if they do then? He is well behaved and motivated but would also like to be called James!

ShadowKat · 20/10/2014 19:52

Is James a name associated with naughty children then?

AndHarry · 20/10/2014 20:22

The same year DS was born, an American with the same, very unusual in the UK, name became a mass murderer :(

We also have an Annabel Hmm

farmerswifey · 20/10/2014 20:56

I told my Mother we were going to name DD1 Isobel - "Is a bell necessary on a bicycle" she chirped. After that I couldn't hear the name without hearing my mothers tag-line.
