Has anything ruined your DC's name?...

Just a bit of Friday fun... Our baby daughter is called Annabelle, forevermore to be associated with a horror film about a haunted doll... Thank you very much indeed Warner Brothers! So it got me thinking about other people whose child's name has been tainted by a film/book/vile celeb etc. There must be plenty of parents of Elsa/Annas out there cursing Frozen!!!...

My dd Grace is the least graceful child would will ever meet!

monkeymamma · 20/10/2014 21:31

Two things have upset me but I wouldn't say ruined. One was a fellow mumsnetter labelling it as chavvy (not in a thread I was on, it was suggested for an op who was snobby about IT!) and the other a disgraced politician (hopefully soon to be forgotten by the wider public consciousness). These things made me cry at the time but in the end DS's name means him, if you see what I mean, so i still totally love it and think it suits him!

500Decibels · 20/10/2014 21:31

We chose a name that we thought wasn't very popular. When ds was about 8 months old, a restaurant opened in our high st called the same name.

wigglesrock · 20/10/2014 21:37

farmerswifey - my mum did that too. We only mentioned it in passing but every time I hear the name now I can hear her trilling it.

pebble82 · 20/10/2014 23:02

We have two options for our DD (who is currently 6 days overdue!). One has been slated by Mumsnetters saying it's too similar to very popular names. The other I have loved all the way through pregnancy but when DP suggested the "too popular" one I love that more. Problem is I don't know whether to go with it now or not. Wish I'd never read some of the mean posts.

Poor mums and dads with lovely little Isis' running about. For every reason under the sun, I hope that that connection is very quickly forgotten. Sadly I suspect not. Politics over.

This thread has cheered me up no end. I do appreciate that Annabelle the film is probably utter dross and won't be a classic, it's more that I don't like a link between my gorgeous, lively little girl and a creepy haunted doll!! Alas I still love the name as it's her name and it really suits her.

There are some lovely names on here and we should all enjoy them for being our fab kids' names and not for any unfortunate connections!

Xx

I had a James - my Dad's middle name. My dh has the same more unusual first name as my dad did & didn't want a 'junior'. There are 4 in his class Shock

wigglesrock · 21/10/2014 06:43

Pebble82 - I have 3 daughters, all of them have very popular names. I love all their names and wouldn't change them for the world. I couldn't give a shiny shite if people think they're dull or boring or overused, especially not anonymous people on the Internet.

My second daughter has the very popular O name, she's the only one in her school year which seems to send people into a bit of a froth apparently there should be millions of them Smile

Go with what you love, the name you can imagine calling your child when it's 1, 10, 18, 30. Good luck and hope the baby makes an appearance soon.

sleepingbeautiful · 21/10/2014 07:21

We agreed to pick middle names that we just liked, not name after anyone, as DH's entire close and wider family have some ridiculous naming after politics going on, resulting in people not speaking, loads with the same names having to use some other name etc. So we very carefully chose, only for my aunt's weasel of a husband to announce DS's middle name was the same as his middle name and how flattered he was we had named DS after him. Which peed off all DH's family, and put me off the name as I dislike said weasel :p

a girl in DS's class has the pronunciation of her name changed from Anastasia to Anna-Sta-Cia because of 50 Shades of Gray.

pebble82 · 21/10/2014 09:41

Done. As long as she suits it we'll go with what we want and ignore everyone else.

marshmallowpies · 21/10/2014 11:16

My DD has a very pretty name (I think) which she shares with a well known TV comedian...no-one ever mentioned it to me until a doctor looking at her red book said 'You didn't name her after that woman on TV? She's a bit galumphing isn't she?' I was too insulted to even answer him properly, just spluttered & muttered something.

I do also know an Isis. I hope by the time she is old enough to understand, the current meaning of the name will have been forgotten.

lumpyparcel · 21/10/2014 11:27

Me and DP made a list of names for current bump. Riley was on there for a boy. Only ever heard it in RL for a boy then I come on Mumsnet and everyone's calling it their DDs. Very confused.

ShadowKat · 21/10/2014 12:07

lumpy - I've only ever come across male Riley's in real life too.

birdofthenorth · 22/10/2014 09:38

DD would have been Vita had Playstation not brought out a console by that name the same month!

puds11isNAUGHTYnotNAICE · 22/10/2014 09:46

I really loved the name Vada, but knew it would be forever associated with bloody Star Wars!

I still love my DD's name, haven't met another one yet. Nothing to tarnish it as of yet, although she is named after something specific which would trump any future things in my mind anyway.

AnniDollxox · 22/10/2014 10:14

I know how you feel! My name is Annabelle and my friends keep calling me a haunted doll, at least I know what to be for Halloween ????

AnniDollxox · 22/10/2014 10:18

Arianna Grande and her high pitched squeaky voice also ruined my LGs name :(

A friend with a Henry felt that the name was spoiled by Horrid Henry.

HibiscusIsland · 22/10/2014 14:04

One of my daughters has a name which people have said on here is dated, but it hasn't spoiled it for me, as I know that generally speaking people on this board tend to have cooler tastes than my own and people around me.

Shosha1 · 22/10/2014 14:08

Yes! Back in the mists of time I chose Lee for DS1. It wasn't daft but quite unusual.

Then bloody 6 Million Dollar Man appeared on TV with Lee Majors.

Every second boy seemed to be called Lee then!
