Is my DH right and is Clover awful?

He likes the name in itself, but says she will be bullied etc because of her name and the association with butter. We both work in education and I did get him to admit to not being able to name a single incident of a child being bullied solely because of their name.

I love it, I was a huge fan of 'What Katy Did' and Clover was my favourite.

He says if I can put Clover butter out of business, or find five people who don't think of butter straight away then I can use it...

Love Clover. Clover Carr of course.

LegoAcquaintance · 17/10/2014 17:11

I thought of What Katy Did as my first thought.

And Clover is less obviously buttery than Flora (which I also like). Or Marge! (which I don't).

But it does seem a little bit farm-animal to me somehow. I think of a cow, and also the horse in Animal Farm.

LegoAcquaintance · 17/10/2014 17:12

SouthernComforts I think we all think of a cow because of the Clover adverts that had Jersey cows singing about their butter.

KatieKaye · 17/10/2014 17:14

I love it and thought of Clover Carr!

As is so often said here she will make it her own . Look at all the people who like Maggie as a name and go not instantly think of Thatcher
I think it's a sweet name

RosyfingeredDawn · 17/10/2014 17:27

I have a relative called Clover so I don't think of the spread at all. She is a bit of a cow though Shock.

starlight1234 · 17/10/2014 17:29

MY first thought was clover the cow when I heard it

Aherdofmims · 17/10/2014 22:00

I thought of the butter, sorry. If not for that it would be sweet.

angryangryyoungwoman · 17/10/2014 22:03

I like it!

Sylviet · 17/10/2014 22:06

I know Clovis as a male name. Never heard of Clover as a name at all, before.

I wouldn't think of butter. But that's cos I don't watch adverts, or buy the product.

Lweji · 17/10/2014 22:06

I wouldn't, and it's not even because of the butter.

It also sounds like a male name to me.

RonaldMcDonald · 17/10/2014 22:13

nice for a cow but no good for a child

DuchessofKirkcaldy · 17/10/2014 22:14

I think of" What Katy Did"first.
Then my old pet rabbit.....named after the girl rabbit in "Watership Down"
Butter only comes 3rd.

DramaAlpaca · 17/10/2014 22:18

My first thought was 'What Katy Did'.

I love Clover, it's very pretty, but I fear you'll get so many butter/cow references that it wouldn't be worth it.

Sorry, OP Sad

Lizzylou · 17/10/2014 22:18

We have a hen called Clover Grin
I do like it though and my cat is called my girl's name for Ds1.
I think Clover is very pretty.

ToomuchIsBackOnBootcamp · 17/10/2014 22:24

I also thought cow, not sure why! Maybe an old programme had a character called clover the cow in it? My next thought was lucky clover, which is a nice association. It's quite pretty but I can see the problem with the butter.

outtolunchagain · 17/10/2014 22:32

We also have a hen called Clover !

BlueStarsAtNight · 17/10/2014 23:03

I also think Cow and butter. Though daisy is a typical cow's name, and that doesn't seem to have held back it's popularity.

Clodagh is really awful. I don't know how you are meant to pronounce it but it looks like it should be 'clod-a' (clod as in clod of dirt, a as in the start of apple). That's probably wrong but I imagine a lot of people would instinctively think that too (unless you are in Ireland).

kaymondo · 17/10/2014 23:12

Sorry but I agree with babbit - I had a friend who nearly called his dd flora until one of his lad mates pointed out the obvious 'easily spread' jibe.

Lweji · 17/10/2014 23:15

I know a Flora from previous work (still FB) and there was never a mention of any spread.

Planetwaves · 17/10/2014 23:15

I like it, and tbh people can find all sorts of objections to and associations for pretty much any name. The vast majority of her life would not be bound up with a butter-substitute ad.

To be honest, I think it really depends on the kind of circles you move in. Do you live somewhere very middle-class, and either rural chi-chi, or hip urban (Brighton, Oxford, North London etc), everyone wearing Boden and possibly going to nice rural primary or private or single-sex schools? In that case, fire away - Clover won't stand out in any way among the Persephones, Heros and Clementines. Live somewhere suburban, Northern or mixed income and expect to send Clover to a big mixed comp? Maybe not in that case.... (I'm from a very mixed Northern region and a big state comp myself, before anyone assumes my DD is called Persephone and I live in Islington.... Wink)

Littleturkish · 18/10/2014 04:30

Thank you so much for all your opinions!

I think my DH really isn't budging on this one, and I've not got the overwhelming majority I was hoping for- I fear your comments will only add fuel to his fire.

As everyone hates it (sister, mother, MIL, SIL) I think it's out. But I'll always love it, and if this bump turns out to be a girl, she's having it whispered in her ear at birth and it will always be her secret name.

Extra bonus points if you get the literary reference above!

Sorry to hear that OP. Might be for the best though, have you heard the song?

"Roll me over, in the clover
Roll me over, lay me down and do it again" Grin

Eastpoint · 18/10/2014 04:57

I thought cow's name instantly, but it is a pretty name. One of my DCs has been at school for 2 years with a Flora & I've never thought about the margarine & her name, she is just herself (maybe because I've never bought Flora?).

goodtimesinbontemps · 18/10/2014 05:57

I thought of Clover from the Katy books too and it was one of my names before dd was born also! Unfortunately my dh hated it like yours, he said it was a cows name and wouldn't even consider it. Clodagh was one of my names if either ds1 or ds2 had been girls but I had gone off it a bit by the time dd came along. Still a fab name though ;)
