Is my DH right and is Clover awful?

He likes the name in itself, but says she will be bullied etc because of her name and the association with butter. We both work in education and I did get him to admit to not being able to name a single incident of a child being bullied solely because of their name.

I love it, I was a huge fan of 'What Katy Did' and Clover was my favourite.

He says if I can put Clover butter out of business, or find five people who don't think of butter straight away then I can use it...

Sorry, I know two dogs called clover. I think of it as a name for a pet. No reason not to go for it if you like it though!

Dumbledoresgirl · 17/10/2014 08:41

I didn't think of butter or cows, and I think it is nice that you have picked a name with a literary association. I quite like the name myself, but then I do tend to like the idea of wackier names without necessarily thinking they would be a good choice iyswim. This name is for life, not just for the cute baby/toddler stage. Can you really imagine a professional woman with the name Clover? If you can, keep persuading your dh. If not, choose something else.

Bluestocking · 17/10/2014 08:42

I immediately thought of What Katy Did. Doesn't remind me of butter because I don't like English butter - didn't even realise it was a brand name. I think it's lovely.

azurepapallo · 17/10/2014 08:48

Clodagh much better. Clover just isn't very... pretty (IMO)

Sorry

LineRunner · 17/10/2014 08:50

Clover as a baby name.

I can't believe it's not better.

I thought straight away of What Katy Did, and didn't think of the butter at all until I read the other comments! I think it's a pretty name.

marmaladegranny · 17/10/2014 09:00

Love Clover! First thought was What Katy Did, like OP - second thought was a lovely Jersey cow I came across somewhere but didn't give the spread a thought until I read postings!

wonderpants · 17/10/2014 09:04

Love Clover too! Pretty, lucky and what Katy Did! Hadn't even considered margarine before reading this!

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/10/2014 09:06

I love it because of What Katy Did, but until I saw that the thread was in Baby Names I assumed it was a thread about the butter. Not sure that would be a reason for the child to be bullied though.

GotToBeInItToWinIt · 17/10/2014 09:08

Also love names with a literary connection. My DD is Felicity, as Malory Towers were my favourite books!

Pandora37 · 17/10/2014 09:08

Haha LineRunner.

I'm sorry OP, but I think your husband is right. I didn't think of the butter at all actually but it just makes me think of cows. Or it seems like the type of name that would be popular with the people who post birth announcements in The Daily Telegraph, they feature some very unusual and in my opinion silly names sometimes. I can understand why you think it's pretty and it's not the worst name in the world by any means but I think Clover would be a very unfortunate name for anyone who's overweight or shy. Of course a shy person might like being called Clover but honestly it if had been my name I would have died of embarrassment.

Bluestocking · 17/10/2014 09:10

I find Clodagh really ugly - I think it's the dag and the agh.

SteveBrucesNose · 17/10/2014 09:13

I'm sorry, this came up on active and I didn't see it as a baby names thread.

I was going to respond and say your DH is right, clover is awful, proper butter is by far superior.

Upon reading it as a possible baby name, I am even more emphatically on your DHs side.

Sorry

trainersandaches · 17/10/2014 09:14

I love it - thought of Clover Carr too and she was the nicest in What Katy Did.

I have always loved it as a name and have been suggesting herb/plant names (including Clover and Clove) to my DH if we had a daughter (not pg).

I also like Sorrel, Cecily, Sage and Pepper but my DH laughed like a drain.

AugustaGloop · 17/10/2014 09:17

I don't think Clodagh sounds like Clover said wrongly. It is a name in its own right (Irish admittedly) and I suspect is more commonly used as a name than Clover. But perhaps it would be odd to use if you have no Irish connection.

ireallydontlikemonday · 17/10/2014 09:21

I thought you had posted in the wrong place and this would've about butter v marg, sorry.

I actually really like the sound of the name but you may be setting her up for a tough time in the playground.

Butter spread stuff - your DH is right

Surfsup1 · 17/10/2014 09:26

I'm not in England so didn't think of butter. I thought of a cow. Sorry!

eurochick · 17/10/2014 09:28

I thought of a cow, and then butter.

AlmaMartyr · 17/10/2014 09:45

I love the name Clover, it always makes me think of What Katy Did. I desperately wanted to use it, but DH vetoed. In the unlikely event I ever have another DD I will use it. I met a little girl called Clover and she was very sweet. I know a couple of girls called Flora too, and never think of butter. I think that a lot of these word association things only matter before you've met someone with the name and then you don't think about it any more. With Clover, if your DD didn't like it as she got older she could always asked to be called Chloe instead?

ChippingInLatteLover · 17/10/2014 09:48

This is the one I was looking for :)

ElephantsNeverForgive · 17/10/2014 09:49

Cows and weeds here.
Our lawn has a lot of clover.

Bowlersarm · 17/10/2014 09:50

Clover is a lovely name.

(Although I'm a great fan of Flora too..)
