Is my DH right and is Clover awful?

He likes the name in itself, but says she will be bullied etc because of her name and the association with butter. We both work in education and I did get him to admit to not being able to name a single incident of a child being bullied solely because of their name.

I love it, I was a huge fan of 'What Katy Did' and Clover was my favourite.

He says if I can put Clover butter out of business, or find five people who don't think of butter straight away then I can use it...

Clover isn't even nice butter. If you're going to name your child after butter/spread then how about President.

Flora is a recognised name somesunny whereas Clover isn't, I think that's the difference, for me anyway.

NotTheKitchenAgainPlease · 17/10/2014 09:55

I'm afraid I agree with your DH. Clodagh is a wonderful name though. I know a Clodagh and she is fab so I may be biased.

ClapHandsIfYouBelieveInFatties · 17/10/2014 09:55

I have always loved it and don't think of butter. I think of Clover in What Katy Did....and she was a lovely character.

ouryve · 17/10/2014 09:58

It's a nice name for a cow.

Girlwithnotattoos · 17/10/2014 10:00

Saw this thread on active list and thought I was joining in a discussion on the merits of clover v butter Blush

But since in here I'll chuck in opinion on the name - great for a cow, rabbit or other fluffy creature but I'm sorry it's not great for a baby. And the clover butter stuff is horrible so that makes it a definite no from me.

CharethCutestory · 17/10/2014 10:00

Sorry OP but I did think it was a thread about butter.

Castlemilk · 17/10/2014 10:00

Middle name, OP - MIDDLE NAME.

It's got a good feeling to anyone who's read the Katy books - other than that, it's going to conjure up images of cows or butter.

Clodagh is horrid, by the way - like clod of earth. Ugly and clumpy.

Siarie · 17/10/2014 10:01

I deffo thought of butter

hermitcrab · 17/10/2014 10:04

Think Clover is a lovely gentle name. DD is a Daisy, which after 8 years still makes me think of a friendly farmyard cow....

TempsPerdu · 17/10/2014 10:07

I'm firmly in the 'love it' camp! I get Clover Carr from 'What Katy Did'/Clover Stroud rather than butter. Think Sophie Dahl also has a sister called Clover?

Clodagh to me sounds like Clover said with a bad cold.

WerkSupp · 17/10/2014 10:17

It's an animal's name.

ApocalypseNowt · 17/10/2014 10:20

Yep, my first thought on seeing your thread title was "but Clover tastes lovely!" till i realised it was in baby names...

MmeMorrible · 17/10/2014 10:24

I like it. Different but classic at the same time. Immediately thought of 'What Katy Did' & wouldn't have associated with butter before reading this thread.

ByTheWishingWell · 17/10/2014 10:38

I'm not keen, and my first thought would be a cow. Sorry! I do like Chloe though.

However, you do decide to use Clover, soon it will just be 'her', and I don't think she'd be in for years of bullying.

Babbit · 17/10/2014 10:48

I went to school with a girl called Clover (1980s). The boys would say, "there's Clover - she spreads easily". You have been warned.

Pisghetti · 17/10/2014 10:49

I thought it might be a butter vs margarine sort of discussion.... BUT I do know a civil servant called Clover through my job and have never associated her with butter or cows and no one else who knows her does either. I think when it is actually someone's name it shifts the context so butter isn't the first thing you think of.

acharmofgoldfinches · 17/10/2014 10:56

Clarice/Clarissa instead maybe?

Aussiemum78 · 17/10/2014 10:56

The mayor of Sydney is clover Moore. And butter here is flora.

I think butter and cows is only confined to one country of the big wide world!

I think it's ok.

Aussiemum78 · 17/10/2014 10:57

Clarice....silence of the lambs!

WittyUsername102 · 17/10/2014 14:32

My thought was Clove from hunger games,, but I have never heard of clover butter. I think it's pretty.

DecaffTastesWeird · 17/10/2014 15:43

I didn't think of butter at all! I thought of the plant. Think it's a lovely name if a little bit hippy. I like hippy names though - might add this to my list! Smile

fishfingerSarnies · 17/10/2014 16:09

I like it, think people would soon forget about any buttery thoughts once they knew her.

Marcipex · 17/10/2014 16:43

Love it, but DH agrees with your DH.

SouthernComforts · 17/10/2014 16:53

Out of interest, why did so many of us think of a cow? I did, and I don't know why?

captainproton · 17/10/2014 16:58

I really wanted Felix for my son, and then I changed my mind when the cat food advert came on. This is a similar scenario and one I dont think you will be able to get away from the butter/cow thing.
