I have called my dd elle (ellie) but everyone calls her el
I understand that in English it spells el but if you look up how to pronouce elle it comes up with el or ellie
it's making me feel like I have done it wrong people will judge me for it.
has anyone been in the same situation or have any advice?

It would be wrong, but the OP's dd would still have to keep correcting everyone, which is what we are trying to help her avoid. Although I'm sure by now the OP has buggered off and is not interested in our suggestions!

livelablove · 17/10/2014 16:30

bigbluestars poor dh Grin. My Gran is called Marigold but as a child her parents wanted it pronounced Mary-gold. She said it was a pain and people would say oh you mean Marigold!and she was happy to change the pronunciation as soon as she left home.

whatadrain · 17/10/2014 16:37

As a teacher who takes registers several times a day - please for the love of fudge call her Elle (as in El) or Ellie (as in Elly) because it will forever be wrong otherwise!

Lweji · 17/10/2014 17:08

Since when has that stopped a thread? Grin

wooooosualsuspect · 17/10/2014 17:44

I'm not surprised the OP has buggered off.

She's had god knows now many replies telling her SHE IS WRONG

AugustaGloop · 17/10/2014 17:47

When I see the name written, I think of Elle McPherson and Elle Wood from legally blonde. Both pronounced El.
If I did not know anyone with this name and had to work out the correct pronunciation I would definitely still say El. In part because of the pronunciation of the French word for "she" and in part because I think it is the better pronunciation phonetically (think Anne etc - not Annie).
If I was told it was pronounced with 2 syllables I would work it out as more like Ell-eh of Ell-uh not ell-ee (ie closer to Ella than Ellie). I can think of any word in English that has a single e at the end (after a consonant) that is pronounced as "ee".

So I really struggle to see this as a possible way of saying the name, unless I was told it came from another language where"le" is said as "lee".

I actually think you should keep Elle as the name, accept it is pronounced El, but let everyone know she is known by her nn Ellie (spelt the right way). That gives your DD more options. I think she may well like Elle (el) as a teenager.

I do think if you are this annoyed already you either need to change the name of tell people her nn is Ellie.

I don't think anyone is being mean, they are trying to explain why people are getting it "wrong".

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/10/2014 17:49

That's what happens when someone is erm...wrong usual

wanttosinglikemarycoughlan · 17/10/2014 17:51

you have my sympathies OP
I called my DD Martha, pronounced Tracey, 25 years ago and people still pronounce it wrongly
It drives me nuts

Elle is a much cooler name

Georgethesecond · 17/10/2014 17:55

Well she is wrong. She just doesn't want to hear it.

The clue is in her own misspelt name, I think!

wooooosualsuspect · 17/10/2014 17:55

And don't you all love to pile in to stick the boot in.

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/10/2014 18:02

I didn't stick the boot in. I suggested that, if she wanted her daughters name to be pronounced Elly she would be making an easier life for herself (and her daughter) if she changed the spelling to Ellie.

wooooosualsuspect · 17/10/2014 18:05

I don't think she should change her DDS name.

People pronounce my DSs name wrong, he just tells them the way he pronounces it. It's not a big deal.

Itsfab · 17/10/2014 18:08

No one is putting the boot in Hmm. Plenty of us spend too long having to spell our names for people - me included even though it is spelt correctly - and we want to save this poor child from having unnecessary hassle.

wooooosualsuspect · 17/10/2014 18:25

She's hardly a 'poor child'

Save your pity for someone who needs it.

SophieJoe2014 · 17/10/2014 18:59

well I have discarded this post as I have came out the other side of a bad week and being low I am now me again (the brilliance of hormones balancing?)
I don't know why I first let this ever bother me as it never through my pregnancy, I would just tell people if they don't like it then fine.
so as the sophie who is back to normal, my daughter is called elle and we will pronouce is 'ellie'.
as for the the people who have been less that helpful I would say..........
but I don't want my post deleted
:D chow bitches

OP posts:
KatieKaye · 17/10/2014 19:10

"chow bitches"?

Chow as in the type of dog?

Chow as in slang for food?

Or did OP actually mean ciao, as in the Italian for "goodbye"?

if so, it just goes to show that spelling is very important

OutragedFromLeeds · 17/10/2014 19:13

So you will continue to call her Ellie and everyone else will continue to call her Elle.

All's well that ends well then.

QueenOfThorns · 17/10/2014 19:16

"Chow bitches" - says it all, really!

Alisvolatpropiis · 17/10/2014 19:17

I wasted minutes of my life on this thread. It was all worth it for "chow bitches"

RiverTam · 17/10/2014 19:22
