I have called my dd elle (ellie) but everyone calls her el
I understand that in English it spells el but if you look up how to pronouce elle it comes up with el or ellie
it's making me feel like I have done it wrong people will judge me for it.
has anyone been in the same situation or have any advice?

I also wouldn't believe everything you read on the Internet. My name is a Scottish Gaelic name and I've seen a few places online state the pronunciation in a totally incorrect way, as well as get the meaning completely wrong! Also half the lists of 'Gaelic' or even Scottish names don't even list it but list names that are not.

Point of this is the Internet is a great source of information but not all information is right.

lunar - I'd bet that would have happened to a girl I went to school with as well. Her name was an extremely, err, unusual variant of Michelle, and if you pronounced it as her parents had spelled it, it wouldn't have even sounded like Michelle, neither the French or English pronunciation. I can almost guarantee that people receiving her applications would have thought she didn't know how to spell her own name either.

Lunar - I don't have a ridiculous spelling or pronunciation of my name, but the spelling is the less common version of it - it's a bloody pain, even though most people know it's a name with 3 or so different spellings so often ask - but if they don't ask, always spell it wrongly and I have to go back to correct it. I would assume if I heard "Ellie" I'd only imagine one way of spelling it, with an I.

I do hope the OP has reflected a little, spoken to some people in RL and taken on board how easy it is at this stage to correct a misspelt name on a birth certificate (she can just say it was a mistake rather than go through the whole 'well, we prefered this version', they'll change it with no quibble for a mistake), and add the 'i' in. It will be a lot harder for her DD to change it later if she feels she's rather have the correct spelling of her name.

When I named my DC, both have names that have more than one spelling (it's very hard wth a lot of 'classic' names to find ones without varients), both have the most common version for this country, even though in DS's case, the more European spelling does look prettier when written, I just didn't want to put them through it!

I have fun with my name, while technically it is correct there is a common spelling for the pronunciation and a common pronunciation for the spelling only my parents wanted to be different. If people read my name they mispronounce it, if they hear it they misspell it. I have gone through my life having to explain and I do remember once at school a teacher telling me I had written my name wrong.
