I have called my dd elle (ellie) but everyone calls her el
I understand that in English it spells el but if you look up how to pronouce elle it comes up with el or ellie
it's making me feel like I have done it wrong people will judge me for it.
has anyone been in the same situation or have any advice?

OP, you're getting a hard time here, there's time to change your DD's spelling to Ellie so there's no confusion, although I must say, Elle (El) is a gorgeous name in it's own right.

My DD has a name starting El, I was determined she'd be her full name, before she'd left hospital, DH was calling her Ellie and I must say, it suits a little toddler charging around the place!

If you want to call your DD Ellie, then put that on the birth certificate. Put the other way, if she is known as Ellie, but spelt Elle, she's going to have a lifetime of correcting the spelling - I have a name witha couple of different accepted spellings, usually people get it right but I've spent a lot of time on the phone to call centres explaining that I don't have an 'i' in my name, she's going to be doing exactly the same for her whole life! People will hear Ellie and write Ellie, not Elle.

Save her the bother, put the 'i' back in.

I'm actually quite surprised at some of these responses as I know 2 little girls called Elle, pronounced Ellie! It's not common but it is an accepted pronunciation.

Corestrategy · 16/10/2014 13:42

I have always spelt my name differently to how it is spelt on my birth certificate. All my official documents are in "my" spelling of my name and not my BC one. The reason for this is that my Dad registered my birth and obviously didn't know how to spell my name (no-one spells it the way he did)!!!

ViviPru · 16/10/2014 13:44

I think 'El' sounds nicer than 'Ellie' anyway.

RiverTam · 16/10/2014 13:47

most people don't go through life with a baby names book looking up how to pronounce names.

In this country the word 'elle' (French for 'she') is pronounced El. If you want it pronounced Ellie then you will simply have to tell each and every person you meet that that is how you want it pronounced. Same as with BIL's DP whose name is Briony but her family pronounce it Bree-ony. Up to them but don't get shirty with people if you choose to veer from the norm.

MardyBra · 16/10/2014 13:47

I would assume someone who calls their child Elle pronounced Ellie is either

a) a bit thick knows no French OR

b) trying and failing to be interesting or unusual - along the lines if calling your child Jorja instead of Georgia

Grittzio · 16/10/2014 13:49

Welcome to my world! I have an Esme, pronounced Esmee, I had never even heard of the name Esmay before people started calling her that or until I came on here, she doesn't even have the accent on the 'e'. I find most people who say it wrong at first, listen to how I say it, then pick up on how we wish it pronounced, or Esme will correct them! I went with an 'ee' sound as my PIL have a habit of putting it on all GC names, we didn't use Jack for a boy because of it, so they call her 'Es' now instead - aaaargh! Also with my own name I have had to live with the constant mispronouncement all my life so I guess I don't see it as a big deal. Change the spelling if you want to, we changed the spelling of my sons short name using a Y as oppose to IE as I preferred it that way, he was about a month old but it's his long name on the birth certificate anyway.

Lweji · 16/10/2014 13:50

I've spent a lot of time on the phone to call centres explaining that I don't have an 'i' in my name, she's going to be doing exactly the same for her whole life

I have also spent many phone calls spelling my name.
Which is why I have given my DS a very standard English name, which is spelt the same in my mother tongue (just pronounced differently, but we use the different pronunciation according to where we are).

Sylviet · 16/10/2014 13:55

Anyone with the name Elle, who is pronouncing it as Ellie, is mispronouncing.

Where did this mistake actually start?

ScrambledSmegs · 16/10/2014 14:01

When I was little I met a girl from another school called Siobhan. Pronounced See-oh-ban. I had no idea why my mother was HmmConfusedGrin when she met her.

OutragedFromLeeds · 16/10/2014 14:05

Elle is pronounced El. If you want your DD to be called Ellie then you can use Ellie or Elly or, if you must be creative in your spelling, Ellee.

Alternatively you could move somewhere where Elle is pronounced Ellie (not anywhere they speak English or French).

Or you could let you DD go through life with a name that is constantly misspelt and mispronounced.

ScrambledSmegs · 16/10/2014 14:11

Is Ellie an accepted pronunciation for Elle? I have met an adult one and from what I could gather it was a genuine mistake on the part of her parents. She was both embarrassed and annoyed at having to constantly correct people.

However, people will always make mistakes with names. My DD2 has a classic name spelt in the classic manner. At hospital recently I told the receptionist her name, who then said 'No, you mean "totally different pronunciation of same name"'. Um, no I don't.

squoosh · 16/10/2014 14:21

Elle is never pronounced as Ellie. Ever.

Change the spelling of your daughter's name.

Because most people in the UK pronounce Elle the French way, you're going to have to keep correcting them if you prefer it pronounced Ell-ee. Hopefully most people will learn and remember quickly.

merrymouse · 16/10/2014 14:56

I don't really care how people pronounce names. For all I know 'Elly' is how 'Elle' is pronounced in Lithuania, or Mauritania.

In theory I love Game of Thrones names that are slight variants of common names like Jojen and Sansa (although I would want to see how the series played out before using them on an actual person and am probably only brave enough to give them to a pet Grin)

I think the only issue is that in the UK Elle is generally pronounced El so the OP will just have to decide how much of a bother it is that people are going to assume it is pronounced Elle when they read the name.

squoosh · 16/10/2014 14:58

I think the OP should put aside how much the El pronunciation bothers her and think instead about what a pain it will be for the bearer of the name.

SurelyCurly · 16/10/2014 15:27

Either, stick in an i op or just start calling her Elle

Honeezreturn · 16/10/2014 15:34

If I saw the name Elle is would pronounce it El
Ellie is pronounce Ellie

Sorry but it's quite straightforward to me, I know some Ellies and one Elle and they are what they are
Maybe change the spelling?

SirChenjin · 16/10/2014 15:47

Her middle name isn't Leigh, is it? You could hyphenate abd kill two birds with one stone

nilbyname · 16/10/2014 15:52

Poor you op if it bothers you then you should change the spelling of the name, or suck up correcting people all the time.

My DD has an unusual name, and I am often repeating it to people. She has 2 very classic middle names just in case!

WillowWoods · 16/10/2014 16:34

Ell-e?

Ludways · 16/10/2014 16:35

I prefer El to Ellie, a much nicer adult name IMO.

Lweji · 16/10/2014 16:56

Ell-e?

Sounds like someone from Superman's family.

Or is that Wall-e? Hmm

WillowWoods · 16/10/2014 17:07

It was Wall-e I was thinking of Grin I'd add an i.
