I saw this one today. Lileigh.

Not saying it's good or bad. Never seen it before that's all.

Gems I have seen in our local paper are Frayar (Freya?) Jaymes, Harri, Loocus (Lucas?)

socially · 16/10/2014 19:49

Anabel means disabled in Welsh (almost, it's anabl) Smile

socially · 16/10/2014 19:49

Is Abu welsh? The u at the end in Welsh is pronounced "i".

QueenOfThorns · 16/10/2014 20:02

I turned on a game show halfway through a few months ago, and there was a contestant whose name badge said 'Keight'.

I was Confused for a minute, then realised it was probably pronounced like Kate Hmm

AndHarry · 16/10/2014 20:10

I have an Annabel. Everyone spells it Annabelle but I think it looks fussy, I wanted Amabel but didn't want her to be forever correcting people. May as well have gone for it :o

QueenOfThorns · 16/10/2014 20:14

I agree, AndHarry. Annabelle is too frilly, but it's the more popular spelling. Mine is a non-frilly one, too!

Itsfab · 16/10/2014 20:25

"New" or "edgy" or different spellings just make me think someone is trying too hard to be cool or clever when actually it just makes them look silly.

All my children's names are the traditional spellings. It was important to me, I am sick of spelling my names. All are correctly spelt yet people like to add a letter every now and then Hmm.

barleysugar · 16/10/2014 20:37

I've met both a Teighlour and Euniq.

Floggingmolly · 16/10/2014 20:43

Surely most of those are just down to the parents being illiterate morons??
Spelling your child's (well established) name phonetically just makes you look thick, not different.

WasherCap · 17/10/2014 13:42

What is Euniq supposed to be?

Flogging I think you're right, especially with the Kiera as Keira, they would be pn differently.
Kiera - Key-ear-ra
Keira - Keir (to rhyme with gear)-rah

MrsHathaway · 17/10/2014 13:50

I think Euniq is meant to be "Unique".

Oh the irony of being one of 200 Uniques in a given year. Biscuit

badtime · 17/10/2014 14:41

Washer, tier, bier and pier all rhyme with gear. Why wouldn't 'Kier' in 'Kiera'?

(I am Irish so would spell ir Ciara anyway)

badtime · 17/10/2014 14:42

*it

WasherCap · 17/10/2014 14:52

True. I hadn't thought of it that way.

Stealthpolarbear · 17/10/2014 14:54

There's a boy in ds's class called mafyoo

Oh no, that was just ds's best guess when in reception - his parents went for the traditional spelling :o I did think that was brilliant

princessdave · 17/10/2014 20:43

Teighlour? Good lord! Confused

Szeli · 18/10/2014 05:11

Enola is a valid name/correct spelling. was on our list till we realised it's connection to Hiroshima (name of the plane that dropped the bomb) and backwards spells 'alone'

i saw the ayprill - i wasnt sure how it was to be pronounced at first.

my nn comes from a mispelling of my name from a polish collegue Grin

AuntieStella · 18/10/2014 08:35

That aircraft was named after Enola Gay (the mother of the pilot). Enola was probably the Nevaeh of its day.

Pipbin · 18/10/2014 08:45

The La-a thing is an urban myth.

I have met one. I honestly know a real one. I've not taught her but she was at my school. I have no way to prove this so you will just need to take my word for it.

EhricLovesTheBhrothers · 18/10/2014 09:11

A real La-a in the uk? I'm sceptical. And if there are any real La-as out there I bet £££ they popped up after the urban myth surfaced.

WasherCap · 18/10/2014 09:18

How is La-a pn?

AuntieStella · 18/10/2014 09:23

"I have met one. I honestly know a real one. I've not taught her but she was at my school. I have no way to prove this so you will just need to take my word for it."

You could report it to Snopes, as they've been trying to find a RL La-a for years now. A school confirming that they had one on the roll should be enough to end the myth.

Pipbin · 18/10/2014 09:26

It's not really very professional is it.

PenelopePitstops · 18/10/2014 09:39

I've taught a RECCE who swore his name was pronounced as Rhys.

kadaiden is another one, apparently it's said as kayden Confused

ToniWol · 18/10/2014 09:44

Lea I think may be a Filipino name. The only one I've come across is Lea Salonga who was in the original Kim in Miss Saigon.
