We were originally going with Laurel for our DD, but DH discovered this today and really likes it, but I'm a little unsure - what are MN's opinions?
He really likes the meaning of it and it does fit our family - it means horse trainer.

Faaaaaalcoooooor!!!!!!

squoosh · 08/10/2014 14:40

I think Baylor looks ugly because of the two broad vowels. It looks like an obese, wobbly and unwieldy word.

Not Hilary, Not Esme, thanks for the guesses though! It's a very feminine sounding name.

LittleBearPad - I grew up on a farm and I'm a horseriding instructor (have alternated between working past time and SAHM since DD1 was born) so yes, that's why I like the meaning.

MerryMarigold - She was 11 (start of secondary school). I have no idea where she got her name from, but it's very her.. sometimes I do find it weird how we pick the name of someone when they're just seconds old. Reminds me of a book I once read about a species from another planet, and they named their children once they were a few years old and they couldn't understand why we chose ours at birth.

And in terms of the being teased at school, as you said MerryMarigold, it depends the name of your classmates. The most MN unfriendly names/spellings in my DC classes include Kenya, Cassadeey, Jessabell, Indiya, Allexxxis, Bryton, Panzy, Ratta. Personally I (probably because I disliked the popularity of my name) like seeing unusual names, the spellings can be a pain for party invites when they're young though. (Also it seems mostly just the girls in my DCs classes who have unusual names!)

crumpet - Bayla was bar-luh (like Carla with a B), Baylor is bay-luh.

Itsfab - I don't think it's ridiculous. DD1 is old enough to be her mother so it's not like a 2 year old wanting to name her sibling (hence her suggestions for when DD2 was born included many children's TV character names and titles.. she wanted to call her Teletubby Grin ) and she and her siblings will have to 'put up with' any name we choose for much longer than me and DH will. If they all passionately hated the name Anna, I wouldn't call DC that. And by "ridiculous to discount a name because you know someone else with the name", why do you think it is ridiculous?

PrivatePike - he does, but not passionately.

Legionofboom - DD2 would be insanely jealous of that!! She loves cheer.

Allexxxis? ALLEXXXIS?!? Shock

Christ have they registered her porno website already?

WittyUsername102 · 08/10/2014 17:03

My DD tells me she goes my 'Lexxie' DH said if he ever met her, he'd say it like it like it's spelled.

Op I'd stick with Baylor as I'm worried what you may come up with next Smile

DrElizabethPlimpton · 08/10/2014 17:07

I'm sorry but Baylor sounds like a type of cyst.

HesterShaw · 08/10/2014 17:09

Is there a triple x spelling in any language in the world?

Apart from maybe Klingon which isn't of this world anyway?

HesterShaw · 08/10/2014 17:11

Actually with that list of names, I am starting to view this thread with new eyes.

Kenya, Cassadeey, Jessabell, Indiya, Allexxxis, Bryton, Panzy, Ratta.

Ratta? Cassadeey

KatieKaye · 08/10/2014 17:12

In homage to your rural background I propose Mangold.
It's like Marigold, only it isn't.
It has the masculine overtone you like.
It is different
It isn't popular.
Mangold Baylor sounds very earthy and rooted.
Surely a winner?

Castlemilk · 08/10/2014 17:13

I keep coming back to this thread. It really is the most awful word. Really unpleasant. Oddly so!

It sounds so - grim. You could easily imagine someone saying as an insult 'She's a right old baylor'.

OP, not one person has said that they like the word. I won't say name, because it isn't a name.

Next to Carissa, it just looks so mean as a choice! Poor thing.

LittleBearPad · 08/10/2014 17:14

Kenya, Cassadeey, Jessabell, Indiya, Allexxxis, Bryton, Panzy, Ratta

Where on earth do you live?

moxon · 08/10/2014 17:16

For some or other reason Jessabell Crumpet hits all the right notes.

WittyUsername102 · 08/10/2014 17:17

I keep coming back to this thread.

Me too. It's like the scab on your knee that keeps on giving. I'm utterly intrigued by the thought process behind calling your daughter Allexxxis. It's not like Alexis itself is particularly common or popular. However, just to make sure there are none others in the whole damn world, we're going to add another l and two x's Confused

Only1scoop · 08/10/2014 17:23

I know a Kenya in my mind she's Kenny Rogers Confused

Only1scoop · 08/10/2014 17:25

Baylor would be a bruiser holding a spool of string chewing on some grass in denim dungarees with a red station wagon behind Blush

squoosh · 08/10/2014 17:27

Oh you're in America OP!

Baylor seems less off the wall now. Slightly.
