Baylor?

We were originally going with Laurel for our DD, but DH discovered this today and really likes it, but I'm a little unsure - what are MN's opinions?
He really likes the meaning of it and it does fit our family - it means horse trainer.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Itsfab · 08/10/2014 13:02

Ridiculous to get the kids to have an input really unless a middle name.

Ridiculous to discount a name because you know someone else with the name - except it isn't even the same name Hmm.

Bayler = short stocky woman in my mind.

Don't like Laurel either.

I wonder what it is about Baylor which is provoking such a reaction? Obviously I hate it too. Is it the sound? Is it the look? Does anyone know anything about the science of the-way-words-look-on-a-page?

Interesting

MyGastIsFlabbered · 08/10/2014 13:36

I think this is a wind up, simply because the more people say how awful Baylor is, the more OP says she likes it.

Do your daughter a favour, don't name her Baylor and don't let your DH 'discover' any more names Grin

moxon · 08/10/2014 13:39

Good question Hester

Littleturkish · 08/10/2014 13:39

Sounds like a made up name.

Baylor sounds like a job title from the 15th century. But nobody grows up wanting to be a baylor, they have baylorness thrust upon them.

moxon · 08/10/2014 13:40

Also, Caltech is a great name. Embodies so much bland wonder.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 08/10/2014 13:46

Another top US university: Yale. Even better if you use the middle name Caius.

ErrolTheDragon · 08/10/2014 13:49

Grin Genius.

squoosh · 08/10/2014 13:49

Ivy League? Ivy for short of course.

pookamoo · 08/10/2014 13:50

Like a hay baler?

Fucking Mowgli????

moxon · 08/10/2014 14:05

Meet the Uni triplets: Wellesley (girl), Yale (boy), and Baylor (outlier).
Also: Grin mimsy

Hakluyt · 08/10/2014 14:11

Newnham, Gonville and Caius.

momb · 08/10/2014 14:11

Baylor? No. Just. No.
I understand that your DP loves it but still, No.

Have you considered Threshor, Ploughor, Harvestor, Muckspreador?

Please, no.

Legionofboom · 08/10/2014 14:11

It would mean that she had access to personalised cheer-leading outfits though.

Baylor?
ErrolTheDragon · 08/10/2014 14:23

Hester - if The Archers recently, a new mother had to be talked out of naming her baby Mowgli. After brief consideration of Montezuma she settled on Mungo.

moxon · 08/10/2014 14:26

Sorry, did you say personalised jeerleading outfits, Legion?

minkah · 08/10/2014 14:27

Baylor is a lovely name. Best friends with Balonz, I believe.

Itsfab · 08/10/2014 14:28

Hester it is the heavy sound I do not like.

HesterShaw · 08/10/2014 14:32

Roaring at "Muckspreader" :o

punygod · 08/10/2014 14:35

It sounds like someone throwing up.

"Baaaaaaylooooooor'

Legionofboom · 08/10/2014 14:36

Hester I'm no sure what is quite so awful about Baylor. Maybe it is a combination of the sound, the meaning/associations and the fact that this is MN.

But I am amazed at how passionately some people feel about names on here (myself included). There was a thread recently about Mabel (which seems to be a marmite name) and the strength of feeling from some posters was extraordinary considering it's just a name.
