Ok, so not official but today I met an uber cool mum. You know, effortlessly chic with stunning DH and beautiful boden catalogue children? Anyway, she had a 2yr old DS called Jonny and baby twin girls called...Pamela and Jennifer. Now I'm not sure if Jennifer has ever gone out of fashion but Pamela certainly had, surely? She called them Jen and Pam too! I said I thought her children were beautiful and that she was probably setting a new trend in 60s retro cool names (I meant this genuinely). She said yes, she was quite sure that by the time her Pam was 10, Pamela would be the new Florence. I believed her too!
I realised I'm probably outing where I live as there can't be that many but hey, I thought it was cool!

I was born on 1970 and went to school with lots of Nicolas and Cla(i)res, a fair few Trac(e)ys too.

Boys were largely David, Paul, Stephen or Mark with a smattering of Jason and Ian.

Sleepingtom · 14/11/2014 21:45

I have a Catherine. I didn't think it was particularly 70s but I did semi consciously name her after a girl in my childhood street who would have been born around 1972. I am not even sure why.

Grin at the person who had a strop because she couldn't be called Sandra!

monkeymamma · 15/11/2014 20:31

If I was expecting a girl she would be a Jane/Janie/Joanie!

However dc2 (due any day) is a boy and I'll not be going for Paul/Gavin/Kevin/Garry I'm afraid, cool as I'm sure they'll be in ten years time :-)

David on the other hand is lovely and seems quite timeless to me.

CormoranStrike · 15/11/2014 20:39

I know a 14 year old Geoffrey, you don't get many of them these days.

RRJRJR · 16/11/2014 20:47

Our boy was born in July and we called him John. My husband calls him John but I go with Johnny (a bit more cute sounding for a baby). It's not popular (I don't think) right now. John I think is seen as too common or even boring as there are lots of John's in our age group but it won't be amongst his peers when he is older which is the most important thing. Fingers crossed it will be a classic but under used within his friends / work buddies. Think older names are on the rise.

SquirrelledAway · 17/11/2014 12:32

I can still remember my secondary school class register from the 1970s:

Angela, Paula, Kathryn, Claire, Jane, Sonia, Geraldine, Valerie, Carol, Joanne, Catherine, Lorraine.

Don't remember the boys that clearly but they were nearly all Andrews, Davids, Marks, Stevens, Darrens and Richards.

SquirrelledAway · 17/11/2014 12:33

Ah, forgot Tracey in that list!

jazzyjenbo · 17/11/2014 14:45

Going to read the whole thread later but OP maybe we hav met the same twin girls.. I met 2 yr old twin girls with these names with a bohemian mum at a petting farm in bolton about a month ago.

SkaterGrrrrl · 19/11/2014 22:36

I was born in 1976. Most popular girls names at my school by far were Sarah and Nicolette /Nicole /Nicky. To this day I have about 8 friends called Sarah and have to refer to them all with surname.

Boys were called Chris, Neil, Simon or Paul, mostly.

zzkat1115 · 20/11/2014 22:50

I like all these names being mentioned on this thread much better than the ones people are calling their children these days. I hope they make a reappearance!

Shenton · 21/11/2014 07:46

Steven, mark, Glenn, Martin, Richard

EmilyGilmore · 21/11/2014 08:01

Whatever happened to Simon? Why did it vanish I wonder? Actually, where did it come from in the first place? All the ones I know are in their 30s and 40s. None in the generations above.

ChickenMe · 21/11/2014 11:36

I love: Laura, Jane, Jennifer, Belinda, Samantha, Stephanie, Nina, Louisa,Lindsay, Faye...

OH does not

We have gone for a classic but not common girl's name. Which is weird because my parents gave me such a name when secretly I wanted to be called Tracey Lol!!

aoife24 · 21/11/2014 13:51

I was at school with numerous Fionas in the 70s, is it still popular today?Lots of Janes too which I really like.

MoominKoalaAndMiniMoom · 21/11/2014 17:53

I didn't realise Jason was a 60s/70s name. My best friend is a 20 year old Jason.

I have a four-year-old Jennifer .

She has friends called Craig, Christopher and Mark. I know babies Nicole, Leslie (boy) and Lorna.

Only one I actually dislike is Leslie (Les).

Fallingovercliffs · 26/11/2014 13:51

Don't we need a revival of 40s, 50s names before we get to the 60s and 70s: I think Pamela fits that era and also Susan, Jane, Margaret, Judy, Janet, Jill.

Doublethecuddles · 27/11/2014 09:14

I read this thread and was surprised how different the names were where I grew up in rural Scotland. I was born in 1970, so my list in late 60's and early 70's.
My name is the very popular 70's name Sarah, yet in a year of 300 I was the only one. Growing up I only knew 1 other Sarah.
My Scottish list

A common middle name for girls, if you didn't have your Granny's name was Francis. I had a friend, who's middle name was Jessica, after her Granny, and everybody laughed at it!
