Ok, so not official but today I met an uber cool mum. You know, effortlessly chic with stunning DH and beautiful boden catalogue children? Anyway, she had a 2yr old DS called Jonny and baby twin girls called...Pamela and Jennifer. Now I'm not sure if Jennifer has ever gone out of fashion but Pamela certainly had, surely? She called them Jen and Pam too! I said I thought her children were beautiful and that she was probably setting a new trend in 60s retro cool names (I meant this genuinely). She said yes, she was quite sure that by the time her Pam was 10, Pamela would be the new Florence. I believed her too!
I realised I'm probably outing where I live as there can't be that many but hey, I thought it was cool!

I'd like Lorna to make a comeback, I love that name.
I know a Melanie and her little brother Jason and their names make me smile.

shakemysilliesout · 04/10/2014 19:38

Yesterday I heard a boy in the park called Gary- is that. 70s name?

EdithWeston · 04/10/2014 19:38

60/70s boys were called Nigel, Jeremy, Wayne, Dean, David, Neil, Timothy, Paul, Ian and Andrew. And families with two boys all seemed to have called them Simon and Nicholas. Quite a lot of Richards around then too.

(I seem to have listed my exes Grin )

MadameJosephine · 04/10/2014 19:39

I have a little Jennifer so I biased but I do quite like Pamela too. I think DP would have gone for Pam as a name as he has a bit of a secret Dallas obsession.

I've recently heard of boys called Martin, Mark and Darren all of which I would have left in the 70's tbh q

HaroldLloyd · 04/10/2014 19:42

Nearly everyone was called Paul in my year in school.

Joanna, Joanne and Paul.

tippytappywriter · 04/10/2014 19:43

Paul, Daniel and Matthew were popular back in the day!

threepiecesuite · 04/10/2014 19:43

I love Jacqueline. Like, really love it. I love the way it looks and sounds.

shakemysilliesout · 04/10/2014 19:46

I like Matthew and David- Paul doesn't go with my surname but I like it.

shakemysilliesout · 04/10/2014 19:47

I like Jacqueline too but I'd constantly be saying 'not jackie!' - stresses me out

diddlediddledumpling · 04/10/2014 19:49

we has Sally and Julie on our list for dc3, but he turned out to be Peter. Smile Smile

Justwhateverreally · 04/10/2014 19:51

Gavin. I like Gavin. Also Keith.

Beastofburden · 04/10/2014 19:51

NOOOOOOOO Wayne is 1980s surely?

Otherwise you seem to have listed most of my class here. Not my name yet though.

Is it just me or is everyone aged 40 called Helen?

tethersend · 04/10/2014 19:54

I have and Angie and a Shirley.

tethersend · 04/10/2014 19:55

Also considered Linda, Rita, Patty and Chrissy.

ouryve · 04/10/2014 19:57

I know a little Johnnie.

Wonder if there will be a revival of "Shaz 'n' Daz" sun visors in 20 yearsHmm

ClashCityRocker · 04/10/2014 19:57

Tracey. I wanted to be a Tracey.

And Sandra. I went through a stage of wanting to be called Sandra.

It's mil name though.

Ludways · 04/10/2014 19:58

In my year at school it was all Kevin, Stephen, Mike, Paul, David, Peter. I actually know two Gary's under 10, both are named after their dad's.

Ds (13) is mates with David and Stephen, they haven't disappeared, just not so common now.

I don't think Matthew ever went out of fashion, it's a lovely blokey name IMO.

ouryve · 04/10/2014 19:59

Of course, there'll be Caz and Gaz (not baz - that would have been in the last revival) and Trace....

threepiecesuite · 04/10/2014 20:00

Yeah, everyone knows a Matt.

I know a 3 year old Alan.

Clarabumps · 04/10/2014 20:00

I love the name Angie. There are a few Gary's where we live. Every Pamela I have met has been lovely too. I've not actually met a nice Fiona.
Has anyone met a baby Mary recently?

squoosh · 04/10/2014 20:01

I don't want Paul coming back any time soon. There is still a huge glut of them that were born on the 80's.

Awful name.

EdithWeston · 04/10/2014 20:03

"NOOOOOOOO Wayne is 1980s surely?"

Maybe my 1960s Wayne was a trend setter? Still not forgiven him for smashing my best conker though.

" Not my name yet though."

Them my guess is that you are an Amanda.

MehsMum · 04/10/2014 20:05

I started school in the early 1970s.

Sarah, Louise, Emma, Alison, Julie, Debbie, Tracey, Sharon, Cathy, Claire, Linda, Melanie, Helen, Rachel and Jackie covered most of the girls. Sue and Linda were on the decline, and the odd Jane or Patricia appeared. If you were called Sophie, you were assumed to be a snob (which was true of the one I met at 16...)

David, Nick, Richard, Paul, Darren, Kevin, Mike, Steve, Robert, Matthew, James, Simon, Jason, Jo(h)n and Stuart were what all the boys were called. You still came across the occasional Martin or Colin or Peter. Charles was considered a right posh name.

I never met a Thomas my own age until I was about 20. Nobody under the age of 80 was called Emily. I had a very uncommon name which became horribly popular for newborns when I was about 10.

On balance, I prefer the popular names now to the popular names when I was a child. I shall have to conceal my wincing if any of my DC decide to name their progeny Linda or Keith. Or Neville. Or Maureen.

MehsMum · 04/10/2014 20:06

Oh, Edith, how could I have forgotten all the bloody Amandas! We even had Barry Manilow crooning about them.

Lookingforfocus · 04/10/2014 20:19

The ultimate 70s boys name: Mark.
