Ok, so not official but today I met an uber cool mum. You know, effortlessly chic with stunning DH and beautiful boden catalogue children? Anyway, she had a 2yr old DS called Jonny and baby twin girls called...Pamela and Jennifer. Now I'm not sure if Jennifer has ever gone out of fashion but Pamela certainly had, surely? She called them Jen and Pam too! I said I thought her children were beautiful and that she was probably setting a new trend in 60s retro cool names (I meant this genuinely). She said yes, she was quite sure that by the time her Pam was 10, Pamela would be the new Florence. I believed her too!
I realised I'm probably outing where I live as there can't be that many but hey, I thought it was cool!

I was desperate to be renamed in the 70s and remember not speaking for a day when told I couldn't change it.

I wanted to be called...Sandra

Lookingforfocus · 06/10/2014 16:48

70s couples

Steve and Kaz
Mike and Linda
Chris and Ange
Derek and Lorna
Greg and Penny
Doug and Sue

Rustyzilla · 06/10/2014 22:55

I'm a 1980 baby so not quite the era referred to by OP, but I went to school with a Valerie, several Lauras, Michelles, Leannes and Louises. Boys were Ben, Mark, James and Andrew. As an adult I have a lot of Kristy/Kirsty/Khrista/Kristen and Rebecca/Becky friends of similar ages. One name I haven't heard in a while but that is quite 80s to me is Kayleigh, oh and Kimberley. I think it's nice to bring some of these names back (although Valerie can stay back in the 80s for me!) Grin

littleluna89 · 06/10/2014 23:09

Oh god not Claire! I still growl at people for calling me bloody Claire Bear!!

Tranquilitybaby · 07/10/2014 00:12

I was a late 70's baby and the popular names were Amanda, Louise (everyone had that as their middle name!), Vicky, Sally, Sarah, Michelle, Tracey, Robert, Ian, Steven, Daniel.

Lookingforfocus · 07/10/2014 05:14

Another 70s couple The Obamas: Barry and Michelle.

weegiemum · 07/10/2014 05:28

According to this thread my gran had a 60s name, as does my mum, me (1970) and my dds (10 and 14).

Clearly we are the ultimate 60s/70s family (though my younger sister, born in 1972, has one of the most popular names of the last 10-15 years!).

MrsSlocombesPussy · 07/10/2014 06:27

I'm was born in the late 60s. The names I remember are:
Beverley
Amanda
Julie
Tracey
Sharon
Hayley
Michelle
Claire
Alison
Jackie
Susan
Kay
Siobhan
Deborah
Karen
Donna
Diane

mynameisnotmichaelcaine · 07/10/2014 06:41

Oh good! I promised dd that her middle name (Christine) would be trendy by the time she's a teenager. She's 10, so time is ticking on! ??

JimbosJetSet · 07/10/2014 06:55

I know a baby Martin, a 3 year old Linda and a 1 year old Scott. I met a 6 year old Terry recently, named after his Dad, it suited him.

Vintagejazz · 07/10/2014 13:56

I would consider Pamela and Jonny to be more 50s or even 40s names. By the 70s they would have been considered quite dated for a new born baby.

Vintagejazz · 07/10/2014 13:58

Oh and I agree, I think that vintage is on the way back. I have heard of small children being named Dorothy, Nancy and Bea. And one of the children on The Kitchen last night was called Daphne.

kelper · 07/10/2014 14:03

I always wanted to be called Melanie.
I don't know anyone by that name, but I love it. Ds middle name is Simon.

cheapandcheerful · 07/10/2014 14:14

...Keith?

Selinemaratima · 07/10/2014 14:16

I agree, love Dorothy, Betty, Gwen, Marie, Charlotte, Phoebe, Rose, Penny (penelope) but most common names at my school were Jeanette, Louise, Donna, Sally, Fiona, Jenny, Vicky, and the boys Andrew David, Matthew, Jonathan, Edward, Daniel, Michael, Paul, but the names I just never liked were Keith, Peter, Ian, Kevin they sound so blunt in a way when you say them and sorry but IMHO sound a bit boring too

SwayingCat · 07/10/2014 14:17

I was about to come on and say everyone's middle name was Louise, but I seem to have been beaten to it Grin

I am a mid 70s baby and my school year consisted of Amanda, Claire, Jenny, Holly, Karen, Heather, Lisa, Deborah (Debbie), Sarah etc. Nothing awful but all a bit dull. ( I am one of those listed so can say that). Boys were Michael , Matthew, Simon, Stev(ph)en, Colin, Andrew.

I would say Pamela is more of a 50s& 60s name though, I would expect most Pamelas I meet to be older than me. Although having said that the only two I know are similarish age to me.

outtolunchagain · 07/10/2014 18:06

I was born mid 1960s the girls were a Helen, Susan/Suzanne , Katherine, Fiona, Sarah, Joanne ,Alison and Lynsey . Friends now have pretty much the same names .We did have a Pamela in our year and a Sophie.

The boys were Mark, Ian, Jeremy, Nigel,Matthew, Adrian, Andrew and James .

Interestingly ds1 was in a drama lesson at school once and they had to get into groups according to Dads name , the biggest group was Jeremy!

Leeds2 · 07/10/2014 18:46

Started school in 1970.

Popular names for girls were Sarah and Jane. Also Alison and Lindsey. I don't think Sarah has ever gone out of fashion.

For boys, there were lots of Davids, Johns, Lees and Craigs. Also Tony and Peter.

Lookingforfocus · 08/10/2014 11:07

I had two Natalies in my class at primary in the 70s and my best friend now is an early 70s baby and she is another Natalie!

Lovecat · 08/10/2014 11:27

My sister was born in 1970, the names in her class (afaik) were:

Janet, Rachel, Amanda/Mandy, Kimberley (she was considered very exotic), Catherine/Cathy, Sarah, Sally, Lisa, Ann/Anne, Marie/Maria, Alison, Donna, Jeanette, Paula, Lesley, Christine/a, Jackie/Jacqueline, Suzanne/Susan, Pamela, Tracey, Annette and Michelle for girls. There was also an Antoinette and a few Jacintas, but it was a Catholic school...

David, Gavin, Paul, Andrew, Mark, Martin, Gary, Keith, Colin, Richard, Anthony/Tony, Damien (this was pre-Omen), Brian, James, Graham, Neil, Steven, Craig, Christopher, Philip, Carl and Ian for the boys.

I think the girls got the 'interesting' names...

lisej · 08/10/2014 13:20

I love Sharon and have always wished it didn't have the reputation that it earned in the 70s as it's such a lovely name.

I'd really like Clare/Claire and Jane to make a comeback because they're such lovely, unfussy names. And Simon for boys.

I know loads of women called Lindsey (and variations of that spelling) who are in their 30s. It's not a name I like, but it could be due a comeback in 10 years or so.

snufflebum · 12/11/2014 16:47

I think this thread is also due a revival, so here's my class names (I'm a late 70's addition myself Wink)

Anthony and variants
Graeme/Graham
Neil
David
James
Robert
Gareth

Girls (I remember more of these as went to all girls high school)
Lindsey
Nicloa
Debbie
Lisa
Denise
Louise/Louise
Claire/Clare
Victoria
Amanda
Liz
Lucy
Helen
Laura
Emma
Danielle
Elaine
Sally
Angela
Charlotte
Zoe

And twins called Ricky and Nicky

NadiaWadia · 13/11/2014 02:19

I was born in the 60s and don't remember any classmates called Pamela. The only Pamelas I knew were friends of my Mum, so probably born 1930s/40s.

Actually I really like it though! Due for a revival by now I'd say.

CheerfulYank · 13/11/2014 02:48

What thecaroline said! A lot of those names don't scream 70's to me as an American. Though Pamela does. :)

I love the name Caroline. It's currently as the top of my list for DC3, due in June. :)

BitOutOfPractice · 13/11/2014 03:37

At last! My name has been mentioned on a MN baby names thread!!
