DH is French and we're thinking of French names, I was wondering how "Quentin" is seen as a name in the UK? I'm kind of new here so I don't know anything :)

Ok I've done some searching on past MN discussions and it seems that people HATE this name, can anyone explain why?

Is this a boys name or a girls name?
I assume it's a girls name but if it's not then sorry, it's just not one I've heard before. But if it is, how about Quinn instead?

helloworld19 · 14/09/2014 16:50

It's a name for a boy

I like!! Really like!

BreeVDKamp · 14/09/2014 16:55

Yes it's a boy's name... Quentin Blake!!

It's a bit too kind of neat for my taste.... Quentin... I think it's the 'tin', very precise. I imagine a very quiet boy.

Lozmatoz · 14/09/2014 16:56

Yea, I quite like it. OP, have never heard of Quentin Blake????

HerRoyalNotness · 14/09/2014 16:58

My xFil is a Quentin, very odd fish. The only other I know is spelt quintyn and comes from a very popular family with really great, well-rounded children

KatherinaMinola · 14/09/2014 17:07

I assume it's a girls name but if it's not then sorry, it's just not one I've heard before.

Seriously, you've never heard of Quentin Tarantino? Grin

Nice name, OP - quite posh though (unless you're Quentin Tarantino).

winnertakesitall · 14/09/2014 17:09

I really really like it. A grown up Quentin would be really clever (IMO!)

gertiegusset · 14/09/2014 17:09

Reminds me of Uncle Quentin in the Enid Blyton Famous Five books, he was George's Dad and Julian, Dick and Anne's Uncle.
Poncey name.

WittyUsername102 · 14/09/2014 17:55

Blush nope, never heard of Quentin Tarantino.

AllMimsyWereTheBorogoves · 14/09/2014 17:59

Blimey. Never heard of Quentin Blake, Quentin Tarantino or Uncle Quentin in Enid Blyton? I know only one in RL. He spells it Quinton. Lovely man, but a touch eccentric.

I like it, but the possibility of mis-spellings would put me off.

SinglePringle · 14/09/2014 18:15

Witty are you in the UK? No judgement but I am [shocked] you've never heart of Quentin Tarantino. Resovoir Dogs? Pulp Fiction? Kill Bill?

gertiegusset · 14/09/2014 18:28

What about Tarquin?

helloworld19 · 14/09/2014 18:35

Lozmatoz no I didn't know who that was, I'm American and don't get most of these references (for example gertiegusset I had to google "poncey", not sure which definition is right but I guess it's an insult?)

The name is widely used in France and the baby will be half-French so that's why we're thinking about it, just wanted to see how it would be interpreted here in the UK.

OP posts:
gertiegusset · 14/09/2014 18:36

I'd go with pretentious or affected for poncey OP.

gertiegusset · 14/09/2014 18:37

Sorry, just don't like it at all, others might though.

MiniTheMinx · 14/09/2014 18:40

I love it, but I am biased, I know a Quentin and he isn't poncey.

Viviennemary · 14/09/2014 18:40

I don't like it at all. Makes me think of Uncle Quentin in the Famous five. But it's up to you.

ashtrayheart · 14/09/2014 18:41

Horrible.

WittyUsername102 · 14/09/2014 18:45

SinglePringle - never heard of Reservoir Dogs, heard of Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction, but never seen.

SinglePringle · 14/09/2014 18:53

Fair enough. Quentin T wrote and directed them all.

Waltons · 14/09/2014 18:54

Quentin Crisp was an infamous homosexual decades before homosexuality was decriminalised in Britain. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quentin_Crisp

Although he was a really extraordinary and brave man in his time, the legacy of his name and his sometimes outrageous behaviour is still around, and could be in 10 years or more to come.

I don't think a teenager would enjoy that.

Pinksun12 · 14/09/2014 19:05

I really like it! It's on my list too!

hellokitty22 · 15/09/2014 07:14

We have a Quentin! I'm surprised how unfamiliar it seems to some of you. Were in the uk and know of 2 others (incl one ds's age).
We love his name, most people comment very positively on it and most friends know Quentin Blake (Roald Dahl's illustrator) or film director Quentin Tarantino.
