DH is French and we're thinking of French names, I was wondering how "Quentin" is seen as a name in the UK? I'm kind of new here so I don't know anything :)

To me it's a bit of a nerdy name in the same vein as Eugene.

hellokitty22 · 15/09/2014 07:37

Surf, you've not met my Quentin then Wink. He's super cool (biased)!

Surfsup1 · 15/09/2014 07:43

Hellokitty - I'm pretty sure Quentin Tarentino is no nerd either. I don't know how I came to that name-association, but I can't shake it! Smile

vdbfamily · 15/09/2014 07:58

Quentin actually means 'born 5th' and is often used in that context. I have an uncle Quentin who was the last of 5 boys!

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 15/09/2014 08:09

It's a beautiful name, go for it!

EverythingCounts · 15/09/2014 08:16

I really like it. And Tarantino will be the person British teenagers know with the name which is cool. I doubt any teenagers are well versed in Quentin Crisp and his life story. Not a problem.

Kaekae · 15/09/2014 09:14

I really like it. Instantly think of Quentin Blake.

rachel234 · 15/09/2014 12:30

I love it - cool, strong, classic. I think Quentin, along with other 'old' names (Arthur, Hugo, Stanley etc) are all becoming more fashionable again - I know a few young Quentins.

Agree that most kids/teens will associate the name with Quentin Tarantino and/or Quentin Blake. Go for it!

minniemaus · 15/09/2014 12:42

I like Quentin. Very masculine and still quite underused. But still highly acceptable and ages well. Love the initial Q too.

Agree that it might becoming more mainstream, although we only know one Quentin under 10.

helloworld19 · 15/09/2014 13:12

Thanks everyone :)

I love it, but am biased as we have one Smile.

megs7 · 15/09/2014 14:32

We have four boys and are expecting again. I was determined to name him Quentin/Quintin Emmanuel, but turns out we are getting a girl.

A fifth boy has to be Quentin, right? I love the name.

itsnothingoriginal · 15/09/2014 15:49

Personally I find it a bit of a 'pompous' sounding name but I do know of one or two little boys called this so is maybe getting more popular!

Much prefer Quinn for a 'Q' name..

poppydaisy · 15/09/2014 16:08

Really like Quentin!

Legionofboom · 15/09/2014 16:14

I really dislike it and agree it is poncey.

ohjesus · 15/09/2014 16:16

I love it. It was one of our possible names for our ds

SconeRhymesWithGone · 15/09/2014 16:17

OP, as you are American, you will probably appreciate this: Quintin Roosevelt, youngest son of President Teddy Roosevelt, a hero of World War I and buried in France.

evamummy · 15/09/2014 16:23

Love Quentin. It's cool, classic and fairly uncommon, but seems to be getting more popular.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 15/09/2014 16:40

Sorry, I misspelled his name; that would be Quentin Roosevelt. I really like the name too.

SouthernComforts · 15/09/2014 16:53

This is one of those names that I think really depends on your socio-economic status.

At the school I went to he would have been ripped to pieces for that name. I was one of the 'posh' kids because my mum and dad were together and both worked. I'm as working class as they come. Sad

helloworld19 · 15/09/2014 18:47

wow SconeRhymesWithGone I absolutely do appreciate that, thank you so much! And on top of that (from wikipedia) not only is he buried in France but his plane was shot down on Bastille Day, and apparently he was quite a character as well as a war hero. Ok it's settled then :) Thank you again!

I love it. My friend's ds is quinn and i was Hmm at first because i think it soubds too much like quim Shock but my friends ds is a little buggar very much a boy! And then there is mr tarentino who is an absolute genius (even though i find his films too much) i saw him on a chat show and developed a small crush.

SconeRhymesWithGone · 15/09/2014 19:48

My pleasure, helloworld. I learned this just last night; there is a new documentary series on PBS about the Roosevelts here in the States. I am glad that I was able to share this information.

Chachah · 16/09/2014 12:23

I love Quentin, but then I'm French. It sounds different and has different connotations for me.

Dh is American absolutely hates the name! Thinks it's old and pretentious.

evamummy · 16/09/2014 13:56

I love it! I think peoples' perceptions of these 'old' names change as they become more popular. Names like Sebastian, Hugo and Quentin are becoming more mainstream and therefore losing their old associations.
