Amelia or Clara?

I've loved the name Amelia FOREVER, but now that I'm finally expecting a baby girl the popularity aspect bothers me. I also love Clara, but don't want to feel that I'm going for my second favourite name (especially as I don't actually know ANY Amelia's in RL!)

Which do you prefer and why?

I like both but Amelia is somewhat overused. You could change the spelling Emelia Emilia

babyblabber · 02/09/2014 19:04

I think it's a really tough one! I loved loved loved the names sophie and chloe all my life and then when I started having babies they were both top 10.

DD is Sophia which DH preferred and it got me over the popularity issue (although obviously very similar). not sure if I would have gone with sophie but way prefer Sophia now anyway.

now pregnant again and I can't find a girl's name I love so am thinking about chloe again. it's fallen out of the top 10 (in Ireland) but it's not exactly original and ideally i'd prefer something a little different to the normal run of the mill names.

so i'm no help, but will be watching this thread with great interest!

I do think that there are so so many names these days that even top 10 names aren't given to that many babies when you look into it.

I really like Emilia not so keen on Amelia but do prefer it to Clara which is a little bit "in" at the moment. Amelia is super popular but has been around for a while.

Strokethefurrywall · 02/09/2014 19:20

Prefer Clara - much sweeter and less popular.

Username12345 · 02/09/2014 19:44

IMO Clara is popular too.

Out of the 2 I like Amelia.

burgatroyd · 02/09/2014 21:45

Clara is nicer.

pilates · 02/09/2014 21:53

Clara

SanityClause · 02/09/2014 21:54

Clara!

Lovely!

MrsBungle · 02/09/2014 21:54

Clara is much nicer.

Allalonenow · 02/09/2014 22:04

Clara wins hands down, sassy, with plenty of Oomph factor but still very charming. Pretty for a little girl but also interesting for a grown up.

Longdistance · 02/09/2014 22:07

Clara

UnrelatedToElephants · 02/09/2014 22:08

Clara - less frilly with more oomph

crazylady321 · 02/09/2014 22:32

I prefer Clara, Amelia is a very pretty name but its been over used an awful lot this last couple years

zazie7 · 02/09/2014 22:46

I prefer Clara personally, but if you love Amelia more I wouldn't let the popularity bother you.

Sophronia · 02/09/2014 22:51

I think Clara is nicer.

TheCharWoman · 02/09/2014 23:34

Not Amelia! It is a pretty name, but honestly it is everywhere. Clara is only common on Mumsnet, I've never come across it in real life. It is brilliant!

minniemaus · 03/09/2014 08:47

Both popular but Amelias are everywhere!
Prefer Clara or how about Clare?

Alisvolatpropiis · 03/09/2014 09:57

I much prefer Clara.

I don't like the usage of Amelia as a medical term. This is clearly something I am quite alone in given the popularity of the name.

Only1scoop · 03/09/2014 09:58

Clara....

3 Amelia's at nursery

NickiFury · 03/09/2014 10:03

Clara. I've always loved that name.

Ham69 · 03/09/2014 10:23

I love Clara but if you really love Amelia you should use it. Do you like Amelia? Or Cecilia?

Ham69 · 03/09/2014 10:24

I meant Amelie!

ataposaurus · 03/09/2014 16:19

Clara is a million times nicer! Amelia is overused and a bit wet sounding. Also disagree about Clara being popular, I only know one (it may get popular though, but not likely to be number one in near future).

lastnightIwenttoManderley · 04/09/2014 21:56

Do you have a son called The Doctor?

sorry...both beautiful names! Couldn't resist commenting when i saw them together though :)

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 05/09/2014 01:21

Clara definately. Mind you I'm a Clare so perhaps I'm biased.
Far too many Amelias.
