So depressed by the lack of interesting boys names!

Due in 9 weeks, and every boys name I hear bores me to tears!

Not interested in cutesy little boy names (Alfie/Archie/Charlie) and absolutely no 'Thomas the Tank Engine' names (Edward, Henry, James, etc).

Impress me with something a wee bit different!

Inspiration from your girls list - how about Jesse?

PoseyParker · 05/09/2014 21:21

Acer and Fox are on our list. My little boy's middle name is Falcon. I wish I'd had the guts to make it his first name.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 05/09/2014 21:29

Simeon
Moshe
Urban
Arne
Stefan
Bruno
Asher
Jonquil
Jolyon
Edwin
Rufus
Godwin

Only use Erik if the middle name is going to be 'Bloodaxe'.

Sebastian, Raoul,

ErrolTheDragon · 05/09/2014 22:59

I see someone has already mentioned Mowgli but the latest development is Montezuma (nn Monty....) ... fans of The Archers much prefer Maurice, definitely due that comeback.

I saw you had Vivian on your girl's list, that's a male name too.

MsCoconut · 06/09/2014 01:06

OP, Your short list has many great names! I'd have a hard time trying to pick a short list from it. Theodore, Nicholas, Zachary, Finlay, Spencer, Elliot, Desmond, Samuel, Luke and Emmett are all on my list of favourites.

Maybe keep throwing out names of other Theodores to lose the chipmunk association with your DH (Theodore Roosevelt, Theo Walcott).

newrecruit · 06/09/2014 09:37

Emmet is nice but people will just think you've named him after the Lego movie Wink

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2014 09:49

Emmett is really nice - I love it.

Any one with any taste won't think Lego movie. They will think Back to the Future.

This is a good thing.

fairyteepee · 06/09/2014 12:43

Emmett makes me think of Twilight! Its nice

Nessalina · 06/09/2014 12:50

Yeah I think Emmett Brown - great Scott!! Grin

5madthings · 06/09/2014 13:17

redtoothbrush as I said dd would have been Emmett if she were a boy and yes after back to the future. If we ever have another and it's a boy they will Emmett cassius. I am pissed at the Lego movie connection but Emmett will always be Emmett Brown from back to the future for me and we love the name. :)

newrecruit · 06/09/2014 14:11

Are you saying I don't have taste!

How very dare you Grin

florascotia · 06/09/2014 15:00

Abbie - Jonquil is a girl's name, surely? It's a pretty spring flower, a kind of daffodil. Is this a typing error for Torquil, perhaps?

Everyone - Emmet means 'ant' in several English dialects. It is also used as unflattering slang for 'tourists' in Cornwall www.worldwidewords.org/weirdwords/ww-emm1.htm.

AbbieHoffmansAfro · 06/09/2014 15:50

Not a typo. It was a boy's name, possibly not used as such now.

bealos · 06/09/2014 15:57

Atticus is great. I can see that getting more used.

What about Nye? As in Nye Beaven. From :
Aneirin [a?n?ir?n] or Neirin was a Dark Age Brythonic poet. (Awesome!)

And to those who slur the 'East London names' - these will be the ones that are popular in 5 years time (well, some of them, perhaps!!). I do tire of people seemingly making a statement about how hipster they are through their kids' names but hey, each to their own.

DecemberRain · 06/09/2014 16:07

My top three: Caspar, Conrad and Magnus.

DecemberRain · 06/09/2014 16:09

I don't like cutesy or boring either!

DecemberRain · 06/09/2014 16:36

DS is Caspar so I am somewhat biased.

RedToothBrush · 06/09/2014 16:46

TBH I think there are loads of interesting boys names. The trouble is it is not as socially acceptable to stray from tried, tested and traditional and commonly used names.

Nessalina · 06/09/2014 21:20

It is society, but it's also they way boys are. I think boys are just meaner when it comes to teasing, so it's more common to go for a standard 'playground-proof' name. Although if your kids are privately schooled or even just trendy London-based I think you can colour outside the lines a bit more because unusual will be more acceptable. I'm in Leeds, so the choices do seem to be either a) bog standard or b) chavvy. It's not right really, but that's the way it is. If I call my child Jonquil, he will have a blimmin' miserable time at school Confused

Conrad is good. Nice solid name! Smile

I like Maurice also... we had a cat called Maurice once, nn Morry. It was cute. Morry would be cute for a little boy.

Gugglebum · 07/09/2014 03:43

I feel your pain, many times over. I always had loads of girl names, but had to really work to find boys names I could get excited about, or even just settled on. So naturally I've had 5 boys and only one girl. Grin (My baby is Theo and he is the most scrumptious, perfect baby, just to give another bit of positive about that one). After naming all of them, I give you what remains on our list if we were ever to have another boy:
Rafe
Gideon
Watson
Felix
Callum
Cormac
Theron
Hugo
Enzo
Miles
Oliver

Nessalina · 07/09/2014 09:00

Interesting ones! I can see why you wouldn't want to post the names of your five children on here, but feel free to PM me if there's any that haven't been mentioned yet! Grin

I do agree. We've decided to take the plunge... we live in an area which perhaps will be more accepting. I really hope its the right decision as DS has to live with it. We have deliberately given him a more normal second name too so its up to him which he uses.

I do think names can really affect your life and the first impression you give, so it feels like such an enormous decision. That was the decider for us - we didn't want to 'just' use a name that we liked the sound of. We wanted to use one that meant something to us.
