So depressed by the lack of interesting boys names!

Due in 9 weeks, and every boys name I hear bores me to tears!

Not interested in cutesy little boy names (Alfie/Archie/Charlie) and absolutely no 'Thomas the Tank Engine' names (Edward, Henry, James, etc).

Impress me with something a wee bit different!

I'm with you OP!

I have lots of lovely girl names, but when it comes to boys, I feel like they're either classic, too 'out there', not suitable for the cute little boy AND the man. In short, after browsing these threads for most of my pregnancy, I still can't find a boys name I LOVE! Maybe I'm being too fussy, but it's got to be right...right?!!!

Am currently 35+5 and don't know if we're having a boy or a girl.

Nessalina · 01/09/2014 11:13

Ellis is definitely a front runner, and really like Cedric.
I think the need for a nickname comes from my own name. My name is not massively common, but is almost always shortened to a certain nickname, which as I got older I started to really dislike, so when I went to uni, I had a reinvention and introduced myself as a different shortening of my name, which I feel is more 'me'. So I guess I want to give my child a name with options! Ironic when a lot of the boys names I like don't have an easy nickname Confused

Ah! Got it! Cedric Diggory from Harry Potter! Grin

misskipper - I'm glad it's not just me! Smile
I find it's also hard because DH is so much less flexible on boys names too - a few I really liked have been firmly vetoed (Sebastian, Tristan, Diggory).

I have a Tobias, shortened to Toby. Or Tobe if we are feeling lazy.

MollyBdenum · 01/09/2014 11:22

Clovis
Linus
Hector
Emil
Constantine

misskipper · 01/09/2014 11:24

:) Nope you are not alone!!

These girls are coming up with some great ideas, I have to say! My boy shortlist so far is - in case they might help you;

Leo
Sonny (loved it, but now someone I know has used the name and it's put me off!)
Lucas
Gus
Seb (but your DH has vetoed)
Joss (short for Josiah??)
Isaac (the son of a newly made friend...am I copying?)
Felix (again, used to love, but now going off it)
Robin (ex boyfriend.....with some mutual friends, this is inappropriate?!!!)

devoncreamtea · 01/09/2014 11:49

I feel your pain!! Boys names are sooo tricky!

If it helps, I have a little boy called 'Rafe' I think it is a great name - means 'wolf' has a nordic root.

Trouble is that I can't find anything as good for this baby...keeping an eye out on here for inspiration, but not a big fan of either trad (thomas tank!!) names or cute names (Alfie etc) and unfortunately not that into the trendy names either (Arlo, Nate etc) so basically totally stuffed!!

I REALLY want to call me new one 'Moss'....but I already know one - and really like his Mum, so don't want to steal it!! You could though...

good luck!

sashh · 01/09/2014 12:39

Barnaby.

Derek must be due a comeback.

No op you are right they are all rubbish.

babyblabber · 01/09/2014 13:16

i find boys' names very tough. DH has what i consider very boring taste so very hard to agree on anything! we have Noah which fit all the criteria at the time but has since shot up in popularity (although I still adore it).

on our list this time we only have Luca, which I love but DH not sure, and Leo.

Other I like but don't love:
Teddy
Louis
Toby
Jake
Beau
Jasper
Josh
Ethan

Nessalina · 01/09/2014 13:25

DH might be my biggest issue... I can think of all the interesting names in the world, but it needs to be one that can get through his 'normal-o-meter'!

What names does your husband like?

Nessalina · 01/09/2014 13:33

He likes very standard boy names - Thomas, John, George, Harry. His favourite is Charlie, which I just can't get on with (too cutesy, and Charles is too... Downton Abbey).
After big names discussion three months ago we agreed on James for a middle name (DH would be happy with it as first name, but I'm less happy), and either Isaac or Theodore as first names. But now he's gone off Theodore (chipmunk connotations apparently Hmm) and I've gone off Isaac (can't put my finger on why Confused) so it's back to the drawing board!
We've agreed to look again at our liked names and discuss again in a couple of weeks - I'd like to get down to a short list of 2/3 and then see what baby looks like Smile

Boys names are so hard!

How about:
Nathaniel (Nate)
Byron
Alexander
Angus
Montgomery
Jude
Theodore

BotBotticelli · 01/09/2014 19:57

Another vote for Keir. I have one. It's classic and strong but also unusual.

Pandora452 · 01/09/2014 20:02

Eiven

Hoopalong · 01/09/2014 20:15

Valerie
Vince
Victor
Xaviar
Xian
Iasiah
Juniper
Corin

Nessalina · 02/09/2014 08:31

Juniper for a boy?! It was on my girls list, love it lots, but can it be for a boy?

OP posts:
GreedyGonzales · 02/09/2014 08:47

Jacob James
Vincent James
Angus James
Ellis James

And my favourite...
Digby James (such a cool name!)

Nessalina · 02/09/2014 09:07

Ah yeah, Digby is great Smile - already vetoed by DH Hmm
I might try and squeeze it back into discussions Grin

Gabriel (Gabe)

5madthings · 02/09/2014 10:10

I have a theodore, an Oscar, a Dylan and a Rudi.

My dd would have been Emmett if she was a boy.

What about cassius? Or Tate.

Reuben, Lucas and arlo are some of my boys middle names.

I always struggle with girls names so good job we had four boys and one girl rather than the other way round!

Rafe/Raphael also cool.

Btw my Theodore is 15 and no one mentions the chipmunk connection, we have joked we could have named our other boys Alvin and Simon though Grin

Plus Theodorable is the best Nick name for a baby boy :) he jjust gets Theo now or 'the o man' and we like to sing the trio song but with trio changed to Theo.

Lookingforfocus · 02/09/2014 10:10

Your top picks do actually fit in the classic names category.

Gregor
Gregory
Loris
Julius
Francis
Jonathan
Adam
Cyrus
Elijah
Jethro
Phineas
Maximilian (Maxi)
Damian
Elias
Sebastian
Victor

5madthings · 02/09/2014 10:13

I like lots on your list, we had Elliott and Rufus on our list. Ds1 was almost a Felix rather than Theo but I vetoed it due to cat food connection.

We always had a shortlist (long) and waited to see what baby looked like.
And tried a few names out for the first few days, so ds2 was maximus for a day and dd was Genevieve but neither ended up with those names!

misskipper · 02/09/2014 10:15

Love your list, www.mumsnet.com/Profile?nick=Nessalina. Really looking forward to hearing what you eventually go for. What's your EDD?
