my OH likes Cas for a boy I said excitedly we can call him castiel (Cas-ste-el) also after an angel in a tv show, and it means shield of God. Just curious what's are folks thoughts on the name...

Don't like it (sorry!) it sounds made up. I think it is made up? I think if be embarrassed if I had to explain I was named after an angel in a TV series. Sorry!

ContinentalKat · 25/07/2014 15:29

I love Supernatural, too. But Castiel is not a good name for a real child, sorry.

Bearleigh · 25/07/2014 15:31

Makes me think of Knights Castile soap, but I'm quite old. I'm not sure if it's still around.

Bearleigh · 25/07/2014 15:32

Oh... It is:

Thumbwitch · 25/07/2014 15:34

Doesn't look or sound like a name at all, sorry. Don't like it.
If your DH likes Cas, then go for Caspar, or Cassius, or similar.

eurycantha · 25/07/2014 15:37

I also thought of the soap too.

scaevola · 25/07/2014 15:42

I don't think it's a 'real' angel name (or is it a variant on Cassiel or Kafziel?)

If I heard 'cas-ste-el' I'd think 'soap' too (sorry)

busyDays · 25/07/2014 15:47

It sounds like a made up name to me.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/07/2014 15:49

Dd would approve, but she's a 12yr old supernatural fan

Delphiniumsblue · 25/07/2014 15:52

I would choose a proper name like Caspar.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 25/07/2014 15:55

No, Caspar is much better. Castiel just sounds made up and is going to suffer from mis-pronounciation and misspelling.

Notso · 25/07/2014 15:59

Not for me. I prefer Cassius.

RiverTam · 25/07/2014 16:02

Castiel feels bizarrely hard to pronounce, not sure why I think that, but it doesn't trip off the tongue. Cassiel is the actual angel's name, which I think is better and really no different to Michael or Gabriel.

Cassius would be better if you want to shorten to Cas.

MaudantWit · 25/07/2014 16:03

:: waves at Bearleigh::

I am similarly old and also thought of the soap.

BlueKarou · 25/07/2014 16:20

If I heard it I would think he was named after Supernatural, but I doubt the show will still be going by the time he finished school, so it's not likely to haunt him forever.

Not a name I would choose, but if you like it then it's completely down to you and your OH.

ScrambledSmegs · 25/07/2014 16:26

Castiel is hot. He's no.2 on my list after Dean.

Well, I've heard more unusual names so it would only make me think you were a fan of Supernatural (which can't continue much longer anyway), nothing bad.

If you love it and your DH does too then go for it.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 25/07/2014 16:30

I think it's terrible, sorry. Do rather like Cas though. Caspian? Caspar? I'm not fond of either of them tbf, but both are better than Castiel.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 25/07/2014 16:32

I almost called DS2 Angelus (which is an actual legitimate Greek name and was FIL approved at the time) and was talked out of it. WRT to Castiel I'd assume you were a Supernatural fan and secretly be very envious that you had the nerve to use it. I really like Cas as a nickname too Smile

florascotia · 25/07/2014 17:13

Sorry, I really don't wish to criticise, but on first glance it looks as if you were trying to spell the Spanish place name Castile but got the letters the wrong way round.

There are lots of amazing ancient names given to angels - including Cassiel, as earlier poster RiverTam said. Here is a list of them, just in case it might be of interest:en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_theological_angels

Kundry · 25/07/2014 17:17

Have never heard of Supernatural - to me it looks like you spelt it wrong. And it's hard to say without sounding like the Spanish town or the soap

florascotia · 25/07/2014 17:23

Sorry again- I know Castiel is sometimes considered an alternative to Cassiel, but - in English at least - I think that Cassiel is the more usual version and (to me, at least) the sound flows more easily.

pinkgirlythoughts · 26/07/2014 08:32

DS went to nursery with a Castiel, and as someone else said, it seems strangely hard to pronounce- I was never sure whether it was cass-tee-ul, CAZZ-tee-ul, cass-tee-ELLE, or something else! I think his parents called him Cas.

OwlCapone · 26/07/2014 08:34

I think it will be a lifetime of mispronunciation.

HopefulHamster · 26/07/2014 09:20

I wish I were brave enough to use an obviously fannish name like this :D

If it were a middle name I'd say definitely use Castiel (I was semi-seriously considering Aeryn (as in Sun from Farscape) for a DD's middle name), but might be a bit risky as a first. I do like Cas though!

I think if you do go for it people would learn the pronunciation.

romomum · 26/07/2014 18:26

soo interesting reading the responses, yes I am a fan of supernatural...can't deny that!! but after ploughing though baby name books..internet, I'm not finding many boys names I like, I wouldn't really want anything that's in top 100!! but I think castiel is quite cool, no final decision will be made till we actually meet baby!! (Hopefully soon!!)!!Wink I think girls names are easier had a ton I wanted to use Wink x
