Of Aurora for a girl? With Rory for short?

OP posts:

Middleagedmotheroftwo · 22/07/2014 17:48

Well Rory is a boy's name for a start.
Aurora sounds more than a bit pretentious to me.

sonlypuppyfat · 22/07/2014 17:53

No its really bad

MagpieMama · 22/07/2014 17:53

I like it!

scarletforya · 22/07/2014 17:55

I like it too! Pretty name and cute nickname.

YellowStripe · 22/07/2014 17:56

I like it - isn't there a Rory on Gilmore Girls - short for Lorelai in that instance.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 22/07/2014 17:57

Aurora is an ok name - not one I would personally use though.
Rory is a boys name.

nyldn · 22/07/2014 18:01

It's pretty. a Disney Princess name though, right? Rory is a great nickname and it can be whatever you'd like. I know plenty of women with "male" names and have actually always been a bit jealous of a few of them!

Bowlersarm · 22/07/2014 18:10

Aurora - ok
Rory - just no

Why not Rora?

ApplebyMennym · 22/07/2014 18:11

I love both!

florascotia · 22/07/2014 19:19

Not Rory for a girl in Scotland - it really wouldn't be fair. It's a very macho name meaning 'red-headed' or 'red king'.

Aurora is not my favourite name, but your baby, your choice. Would be great if she grew up to like ballet - Aurora (ie 'Dawn') is the name of the princess in Sleeping Beauty. Disney stuff is based on the ballet.

Rhubarbgarden · 22/07/2014 19:23

Disney princess - awful thing to be named after.

Mumof3xox · 22/07/2014 19:24

I think it's lovely

InanimateCarbonRod · 22/07/2014 19:26

Aurora is lovely.

Rory ... no. Hmm

Squtternutbaush · 22/07/2014 19:29

Ruaraidh is the Red King not Rory.

I know an Aurora, she is Aury to family but full name for everyone else.

coalscuttle · 22/07/2014 19:29

Deliberately shortening a girls name into a boys name is just pretentious. Nick names are supposed to evolve.

coalscuttle · 22/07/2014 19:30

And sorry but I think aurora is awful. People eill think you named her after sone Disney thing.

moodymary · 22/07/2014 19:32

I think Rory is fine for a girl as a shortened version of a name.

I read a novel recently set in the 1940s that featured a female Rory but I can't remember what it was short for. She was a great character though....

callipygian00 · 22/07/2014 19:33

Aurora IS nice, but I wouldn't choose it because it's too Disney. How about Aurelia?

Rhubarbgarden · 22/07/2014 19:35

Giselle if you're after a ballet connection?

flipwit · 22/07/2014 19:41

Ha, I actually have one!
Not named after Disney though I don't really care what people think! Rory gets confusing as a nickname but I still love it. DM refuses to call her Rory though...
Go for it if you like it!

BreeVDKamp · 22/07/2014 21:06

Love it, know one :)

stickygotstuck · 22/07/2014 21:12

Aurora is one of the names DH vetoed for DD. I did not realise at the time Disney had chosen it for one of its princesses, so DD had a lucky escape.

Shame, it's a beautiful name quite common where I come from.

As for choosing a 'nickname', just no. Or rather, it would not be a nickname but a shortening of your choice. Why not call her Rory if that's the name you like?

CPtart · 22/07/2014 21:12

Dreadful, a real mouthful of a name.

MollyBdenum · 22/07/2014 21:13

I like it.

BreeVDKamp · 22/07/2014 21:13

Who in Disney is called Aurora??? :-s
