So we are registering our daughter tomorrow and still struggling to name her! I'm after the holy grail of a name thats unusual yet not strange, pretty yet strong. Does it exist? I've yet to look at her and know her name. Our list...

Romy
Inary
Marlin
Marla
Freida
Olive
Zahlia

I like Olive from your list- what about Romilly, Pearl or Edith?

UriGeller · 16/07/2014 16:20

Olive, Marla and Romy.

Marlin is a great big fish, did you know?

bringbackfonzi · 16/07/2014 16:21

I love Marla and Frieda (which is spelt like this I think, not ei. It's from German. You can also spell it Frida). Wish I had used one of these!

sidsgranny · 16/07/2014 16:28

Hi. Congratulations on your dd!

I like Romy. Not keen on Olive I'm afraid - makes me think of "On the Buses". What about Honour, Laurel or Anastasia (nn Ana)?

Please don't name her after a fish.

bouncingbelle · 16/07/2014 17:04

Not too keen on any of your list, bar Marla, which I think sounds strong, classy, unusual get still feminine. When I hear marlin I would just think 'Marilyn'.

What about

Rosalie

Next dd will be Eleanor Rose or Bryony Rose.

MissHC · 16/07/2014 17:13

Frieda, Romy or Olive. In that order. Really not keen on the other ones, the poor thing will forever be spelling out her name.

DramaAlpaca · 16/07/2014 17:13

I like Romy from your list. It's very pretty.

Please come back & tell us what you decide.

Olive! its lovely....

You cant name her Marlin...its a fish!

Pebbles0934 · 16/07/2014 17:47

Olive is nice and Romy is lovely.

Marla and Marlin are not to my taste. Marlin sounds like a boys name.

Never heard of Zahlia and unsure how to pronounce? What about Azalea?

How about Ramona? Juniper? Violet?

Pebbles0934 · 16/07/2014 17:47

Oh or Delilah?

Also heard a little girl called Dali once.... After the painter...!

MrsPatMustard · 16/07/2014 17:55

Olive is lovely. Not keen on Romy but do like Romilly...

turdfairynomore · 16/07/2014 18:04

Romy is beautiful. And I'm sorry to be harsh but I just don't like the others much?
Olive is a nasty colour.
Inary looks like it should have a B in front to be binary. Marla/marlin are like boy girl USA twins from 50s
Frieda is ok but I know one of my age -and she hated her name. Said it was too butch and Germanic
Zahlia-she would be forever saying "like Dahlia but with a Z"

I love the fact that you are being original though. I teach p1 and I love to get a child who us the first if that name I've taught. It then "becomes" them-if you see what I mean! (Which is why teachers can find it really tricky to name their own kids!) The one I'm waiting to teach is angharad. 26 years and none so far. One did apply one year and I was soooooo thrilled....but we were oversubscribed and she didn't get in! DH forbade me to use it for our DD!!!
Ps I also like felicity, Caoimhe and saskia. DS would have been one of these had he been DD2. She is Francesca. (Known as ches or chessie at home and Frankie/franks on the sports field! But never ever ever Fran!)

Itsfab · 16/07/2014 18:06

Romy -- is it Rommy or Row-my?

Never heard the name.

Please give your child a name people can spell and make sure you spell it correctly too.

I think Romily is a nice name.

turdfairynomore · 16/07/2014 18:06

Sorry! I've read that back and I sound like a MIL from hell in the making!! She's your beautiful baby-it's your choice! I've had my turn!!!! Sorry! Again!

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 16/07/2014 18:12

Olive is fantastic!!

seashellgreen81 · 16/07/2014 21:25

Well, we are swinging towards Romy (row-me) at mo.

turdfairy - no worries, your thoughts are helpful actually. You've confirmed a couple of things that were in back of my own mind, particularly your reactions to Marla and Inary.

I hadn't expected naming my baby to be so difficult, but i'm really struggling with it for some reason and new mum tiredness isn't helping! Thanks for all your thoughts and keep 'em coming!
