So we are registering our daughter tomorrow and still struggling to name her! I'm after the holy grail of a name thats unusual yet not strange, pretty yet strong. Does it exist? I've yet to look at her and know her name. Our list...

Romy
Inary
Marlin
Marla
Freida
Olive
Zahlia

Romy is really nice. Please do not name your gorgeous baby Frieda. Only on MN will people say they like it. In the real world people will hate it.

bringbackfonzi · 16/07/2014 22:46

I considered Frieda for my dd (like I said earlier in this thread I sometimes wish I'd used it) and lots of people said they loved it. I think they were telling the truth because they weren't complimentary about some of my other choices!

MsCoconut · 17/07/2014 00:19

Inary reminds me of Inari which is a type of sushi. Definitely would avoid Marlin Inary for this reason!

I quite like Germanic sounds names. Marla, Frieda (spelled this way or Frida) and Olive get thumbs up from me Grin

weatherall · 17/07/2014 00:24

Romy I know of one. I think of the film.
Inary never heard of this, don't know how to pr
Marlin is it the fish or misspelled Marilyn?
Marla quite old lady
Freida good
Olive too celeb, too popeye
Zahlia I prefer Thalia

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 17/07/2014 00:29

Olive is the only name I would consider personally.

Romy makes me think of that movie with Phoebe from friends. And that's not a good thing.

ProtegeMoi · 17/07/2014 00:30

Romily is lovely with romy as a nickname maybe?

AnnieOnAMapleLeaf · 17/07/2014 00:34

My suggestions:

Anya
Eden
Elsa
Lexie
Piper

LucyBabs · 17/07/2014 00:46

Love the name Romy sea

Also

Freya (much prettier than Freida IMO)
Isis
Zoe
Mya
Ruby

mathanxiety · 17/07/2014 05:31

Romy is gorgeous.

I love Frieda (and Frida) too. Frida or Frieda short for Elfrieda or Elfrida might be nice?

Other names based on your list:
Marlowe
Mahalia
Mahala
Ines
Livia
Zara
Natalia

(I really only like Romy and Frieda from your list)

Wishfulmakeupping · 17/07/2014 09:03

Let us know what your final decision is OP :)

cazzybabs · 17/07/2014 09:12

I love olive and I also like someone's suggestion of Portia

florascotia · 17/07/2014 16:29

Romy is really a nickname (for example, the famous actress Romy Schneider was originally Rosemarie Magdalena.) If you're happy with giving a nn as a full name then that's fine - many people are - but otherwise, you might perhaps consider Romy with full BC name Rosemary or Rosa or Roseanna or Rosalind or Roasamund or Rosmerta etc etc...

I don't share Mumnsetters' liking for Romilly. It's a place name in origin, and I'm afraid I don't like names such as Chelsea or Brittany, either, unless you have a special connection to the place.

I like Frieda - lots of strong, talented women with that name.

Really sorry, but am not too keen on your other choices, for the reasons already mentioned by others.

Where does Zahlia come from?? Very, very much do not wish to offend - your baby, your choice, absolutely - but Zahl is a surname, usually.

florascotia · 17/07/2014 16:30

Sorry - Roasamund should be Rosamund!!

Notso · 17/07/2014 16:47

If I had another girl (which I won't because DH has had the snip)
I would want her to be called Ramona nn Romy or Frances I love those names. DH doesn't but she probably wouldn't be his so that's by the by!

From your list I like Olive second. I wanted it for DC 3 but have an O surname and it sounds wrong

Pangaea · 17/07/2014 16:57

Romy, by far!

squoosh · 17/07/2014 17:07

Romy - like
Inary - nope
Marlin - fish. Malin is nice, think it's Swedish.
Marla - LOVE
Freida - nope
Olive - SO VERY UGLY
Zahlia - no

mathanxiety · 17/07/2014 18:59

I'm with you on the matter of Romilly, Florascotia. It was also the surname of Esmond Romilly, who came across to me as a person to whom ideas mattered more than people.

Wishfulmakeupping · 17/07/2014 19:05

Ohhhh I like the suggestion of Ramona with Romy as a nn- that is awesome

moggiek · 17/07/2014 19:13

What about Grainne? I lufs Grainne .......

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 17/07/2014 19:16

Olive.

Our baby would have been Olive Juliet Surname if he were a she Grin

As its a boy Ive no clue what to call him!

SunshineOutdoors · 17/07/2014 19:25

I used to know a girl whose name was spelt 'Freda' just to give you another alternative spelling.

Gingerjv · 17/07/2014 19:31

I like Romy Marla Freida and Olive from your list. Can't say which one i like more)) Porbably Olive! Zahlia is really strange name, sound bad to me((

maggiethemagpie · 19/07/2014 20:42

Romilly is a place name but the place is Romiley, same pronounciation different spelling. I'm there on Monday with work!
It's quite a small place so I don't think it should detract from the name, most people won't have heard of it (unless there's another Romilly/Romiley)
I quite like the name myself but it would always be associated with the place for me.
