Sorrel - name for a little girl? Your thoughts

What do you think to Sorrel as a little girls name?

My family are all set on her being called Ruby but I just feel that isn't 100% right.

So she could be Sorrel Ruby T(our surname begins with a T)
Sorrel Bea T
Ruby Sorrel T
Bea Sorrel T

How could Sorrel be shorten?

I also like the following names:

Coco
Sage
Wren
Willow
Elmer
Winnie (grandmas name)

Your thoughts would be welcomed

Hate sorrel.

Like ruby, willow and don't mind bea as a shortened version of Beatrice but not bea on it's own

Wishfulmakeupping · 03/07/2014 16:21

Sorrel and Wren are both nice I don't like Ruby

juneau · 03/07/2014 16:26

I much prefer Sorrel to Ruby (which is very popular - I know about six!). Its also, IMO, classier than Ruby.

The other names:

Coco - as a nickname or a 'proper name'? Reminds me of Coco Pops.
Sage - Not keen
Wren - A bit 'out there'
Willow - Sarah Palin has a Willow ...
Elmer - the elephant?
Winnie - Nice, but a bit dated

I know a Sorrel. She's about 13. Sister called Poppy. I think it's lovely.

Ruby has been done to death ( at least around here - blame Franz Ferdinand and that song)

Sage - makes me think of Sly Stallone's son who died very young.

How about Saffron if you like plant based names?

TortoiseUpATreeAgain · 03/07/2014 16:37

I love Sorrel -- I've wanted to use it ever since I read Noel Streatfeild's Curtain Up as a child. But DH wasn't keen, so the DDs went un-Sorreled.

There are loads of little Rubies around.

WowserBowser · 03/07/2014 16:40

I love Wren! I don't think it sounds like a 'pets name'

Sorrel reminds me of bras Grin ^

Bowlersarm · 03/07/2014 16:43

I love Sorrel, really pretty and interesting.

Much better than Ruby.

Choccyhobnob · 03/07/2014 17:20

I love it! Couldn't see DH going for it though....

I don't think it goes with Ruby as a middle name though, too many R's in a row although sadly Ruby Sorrel does work better!

Coral2094 · 03/07/2014 17:43

I know a lovely Sorrel, she's in her late twenties, every time I hear her name out loud I think how great it is. Fab choice!

nyldn · 03/07/2014 17:57

sorrel makes me think of foraging for mushrooms, but not a bad thing! an interesting nature name!

love Wren so much though. in my top 5.

neverenoughwine · 03/07/2014 18:01

Sorrel Bea is beautiful!

Also love Rowan ....Winnie is great too!

ravenAK · 03/07/2014 18:10

It was on my list (another Noel Streatfeild fan). I'd go with Sorrel Beatrice personally, but just because I don't like diminutives as names.

I like Rowan too (that'll be the Antonia Forest fangirl in me!) Grin.

Flowerfae · 03/07/2014 18:11

I had a friend called Sorrel in college, hadn't heard of the name before then I think its a lovely name :)

HaroldLloyd · 03/07/2014 18:15

I think Sorrel Bea dosent flow as nicely as with a lounger name.

Sorrel Beatrice for eg.

Sorrel is nicer than Ruby, I'm not normally one for unusual names, but it's nice. There is also Sorella?

NorksEnormous · 03/07/2014 18:43

Don't like it, sorry! Reminds me of bread, is there little brown sticky loaves called sorrel?

CharmQuark · 03/07/2014 18:50

Sorrell is lovely.

And Soren.

Which is the one that sounds more like malt loaf Soreen.

Except is doesn't, any more than people mix up Tom with Tomato.

Sorrel is pretty, but sounds rather like sorrow, so that would put me off a bit.

On the herb/spice theme... what about:

Dittany (I love this as a name)
Anise
Cicely
Juniper
Lavender

Sage and Elmer are definitely male names to me.

Maleducada · 03/07/2014 19:19

~sorrel is like squirrel

I like Winnie though!

BabCNesbitt · 03/07/2014 19:53

Sorrel reminds me of bras Grin

I'd forgotten all about Elmer the Elephant! My 2yo DD will be Hmm

CharmQuark · 03/07/2014 19:54

If you like Winnnie, what about Nancy?

Giraffeski · 03/07/2014 19:55

Sorrel sounds a bit like a name I would give to a rabbit or a guinea pig, sorry.

Justinepants · 03/07/2014 19:55

Rowan or Hazel

MysticMugBug · 03/07/2014 19:56

I like Sorrel, but wouldn't pick the others.
Have you thought about Saffron? I like that

Artandco · 03/07/2014 19:58

Sorry I don't like. I know a Sorrel and every time I hear it it sounds like she's called Sorrow!
