Sorrel - name for a little girl? Your thoughts

gemlouise123 · 03/07/2014 13:50

What do you think to Sorrel as a little girls name?

My family are all set on her being called Ruby but I just feel that isn't 100% right.

So she could be Sorrel Ruby T(our surname begins with a T)
Sorrel Bea T
Ruby Sorrel T
Bea Sorrel T

How could Sorrel be shorten?

I also like the following names:

Coco
Sage
Wren
Willow
Elmer
Winnie (grandmas name)

Your thoughts would be welcomed

I love Sorrel and Wren. Laurel is one to consider too.

gemlouise123 · 03/07/2014 20:40

Minipie I lobe your suggestions
Dittany (I love this as a name)
Anise
Cicely
Juniper
Lavender

I guess i do like herb/plant names.

Thank you all for your suggestions and for your comments on my name suggestions.

Sorrel Beatrix or Sorrel Beatrice are lovely. I beatrix was a name I liked before.

Also thanks for confirming that Ruby is popular. This is my first baby and I don't know many other mums/children so it's difficult to know what is popular in this generation. But the fact it's 12th on the most popular names list is a bit of a give away.

Keep the suggestions coming :-)

I love Sorrel and there is one in DD2's class, she is one of a set of twins and her name is perfect for her. I love plant/flower/herb names for girls.

sherbetpips · 03/07/2014 20:46

What would a short version be - Sore? Sorry?

TweeAintMee · 03/07/2014 20:49

You are going to think I'm mad but what about SweetPea?

MillieH30 · 03/07/2014 20:49

Sorrel is the name of the heroine in "Curtain Up" By Noel Streatfeild (who also wrote the better known "Ballet Shoes"). I remember thinking that it was a lovely and striking name when I read it.

Yorkshirelassreturns · 03/07/2014 21:02

I know a Sorrel who goes by Sadie as a nn. Not any shorter but then Sadie is a nn for Sarah which is the same length. I wouldn't pick itself but it is a pretty name. Good choice.

Downamongtherednecks · 03/07/2014 21:07

The other literary reference I thought of immediately is Hetty Sorrel in "Adam Bede". She hides her pregnancy after being seduced by the young squire and is sentenced to hang for murdering the baby. Pity, as it's a lovely sounding name!

gemlouise123 · 03/07/2014 21:14

Sweetpea is lovely :-) I also like Rowan but my other thalf doesn't. This is my first time posting on a forum so that you for all of your great feedbacka and literary references! Can someone help me out- what do the acronyms DD and DH etc stand for? I am probably being stupid.

A friend suggested Ell as a shortening if I shorten it at all

TweeAintMee · 03/07/2014 21:40

DD=Dear Daughter
DH=Dear Husband

gemlouise123 · 03/07/2014 21:46

Thanks :-)

I think it's a lovely name. In our family it's only ever been shortened to Soz. But not very often.

Nereida · 03/07/2014 22:05

I don't like Sorrel at all, it just makes me think of the word 'sorrow'.

I like Willow, Sage and Winnie the best from your other favourites.

Pico2 · 03/07/2014 22:09

I think it sounds like sorry or sorrow - so it sounds a bit sad to me.

CheckpointCharlie · 03/07/2014 22:09

Seren?

Why, thank you Grin

Sorrelforbes

How have you found your name?! What an odd question to ask someone! Have people tried to shorten it at all?

SorrelForbes · 03/07/2014 23:06

Sadly it's not my real name but I've always loved it since reading Curtain Up as a child my favourite Noel Streatfeild name was Posy

SignYourName · 04/07/2014 05:54

I know a little Sorrel, she's about six and a mischievous little cutie. It's one of those names I mentally file as "uncommon but recognisably a name, probably wouldn't use it myself but quite pretty". (As opposed to, say, Sweetpea, which is just plain twee and should remain as a private family nickname / term of endearment.)

Coughle · 04/07/2014 06:02

Sorrel is wonderful.

Rel or Rellie as a nickname... Or just don't worry about it, nicknames tend to develop on their own anyway!

roadtripper · 04/07/2014 06:28

Love Sorrel, Wren and Winnie

Shockers · 04/07/2014 06:37

I love Sorrel.

I also like Rowan, Cecily and Briony as plant inspired names.

Seren is beautiful... I know an adult Seren who lives up to her name in every way and makes me love it even more.

BeckaH123 · 04/07/2014 09:37

I love, love, love Sorrel! I know my DH would veto though. Pesky DH! Smile I also quite like Willow of your other names.

gemlouise123 · 12/07/2014 18:48

Thank you all for your thoughts.

Sorrell Bea is on the list but I think it might be overtaken by

Alba ???

Possibly

Alba Rose

Any thoughts? / suggestions for middle name?
