80s - Louise, Elizabeth, Marie, Anne

commsgirl · 26/06/2014 11:51

90s - Louise, Marie, Jayne, Anne

When I was at secondary school (mid to late 80s) I was the only girl in my tutorial group who didn't have Anne/Ann/Anna as their middle name.

Gemerama I had a similar annoyance when naming my DS. Wanted a name which had special significance and which I'd always wanted to name my son from being a child myself, but it so happened to be no. 1 most popular name the year ds was born. We used it anyway, but I still felt a bit annoyed and cheated that my special name had been stolen by the general population! At least he is only one of 2 in his year at school, whereas there are other names which 3 or 4 children have, in his year.

I had no idea that Jane seems to have been such a popular middle name over the last few decades! It's my Dd's middle name (after a family member) and I thought it was relatively unusual - maybe it is for the current generation of young children?

I am a Louise, born late 80's, so many people I know have my name for a middle name! (Inc my DS who was born after me...)

SecretNutellaFix · 26/06/2014 12:00

I was born 1979.

Middle names for my.classmates were most often Louise, Jane, Anne and Mary. Elizabeth was next. The boys were.nearly.all John, James, Robert and Michael. Wyn was a popular option as well as we lived in rural west Wales

halecromp · 26/06/2014 12:01

I was born in 1983 and most of my school friends had Ann, Elizabeth, Jane, Marie or Louise (mine) as a middle name. When my Mum had my sister (1984) there were 5 baby girls on the ward and they all had the middle name Marie!

spence24 · 26/06/2014 12:46

I've got Jayne, and my four best friends throughout school were three Louise's and another Jayne! We were all born in 1985. My brother is a bit more unusual as he has Spencer as his middle name, which is my mum's maiden name, which I then took on as my surname as an adult. Although Spencer is rising in popularity now, in the 80s it was less common!

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 26/06/2014 12:49

Louise or Jane, my sister and I were born in the late 70's and my middle name is Louise and hers Jayne.

Mumzy · 26/06/2014 12:59

I read Elizabeth was the most popular middle name in 50s due to the ascension of the queen

flowerpowers · 26/06/2014 14:32

Louise, Jane, Anne (70s) Grace, May/Mae, Rose (now)

Really makes these names mere 'fillers' as they seem so common...

Rtfairy · 26/06/2014 16:41

Louise or Jane 80s

lubitons · 28/06/2014 01:06

NZ, early 90s - Rose, Grace, James. I don't think it has really changed much since then.

KoalaDownUnder · 29/06/2014 10:20

Marie, Louise, Lee - 1970s Australia

sashh · 29/06/2014 21:56

Mid sixties and it seemed to be the law every 3rd girl had Louise as her middle name.

Even the girl in my class who was called Louise was actually some other name - Louise and used her middle name as her given name.

My first name is Louise. Sob. Thought it was quite an unusual name until this thread. Maybe not .... AND I've not got a middle name!!

Brummiegirl15 · 29/06/2014 22:51

I was born in 1976 and Louise WAS the middle name of choice. In 2014 it appears May/ Mae is the Louise equivalent. What IS it about the middle name May? Used everywhere!

ChronicChronicles · 01/07/2014 04:11

Late 80s Elizabeth or Anne.
