I really like this name but there are a couple of things making me doubt it.

Oh, and I should add it would be "just" Kate. DD has a name which is a shorter version of a longer name but works in its own right.

  1. Our surname starts with a C. Very similar to Cavendish
  2. Baby will have an aunt whose name is Katie. Said Aunt lives abroad but is as involved as possible being so far away
  3. It almost doesnt seem to suit a small baby, even though Im naming a future adult Grin if that makes sense.

Any thoughts?

I think its a lovely name but removed it from our list because of Kate Middleton - didn't want to be seen as being on any royal bandwagon - or a fan of her of bland fashion

Bowlersarm · 26/05/2014 18:22

Love Kate.

Would want it to be short for Katherine though. It's a short name, for me, not a full name.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 26/05/2014 18:24

Oh I didnt think of the royal connection. Also have Pippa on The List Grin whoops!

Love Kate. It wouldn't fit our surname otherwise I would use it myself. It would probably suit a longer middle name too.

PeppermintCream · 26/05/2014 18:26

We have a Kate. Love it as a name. Lots if people do try and call her Katie, it's not for us but I'm happy for other people to use it as a NN.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 26/05/2014 18:27

So aside from opinions on the name, would any of my doubts put you off? The C surname, my sister being Katie?

Katharine/Katherine/Catherine would be better (with Kate for short) and give her more options in the future. But either Kate or Katherine would be fine with Cavendish I think. It's quite nice alliteration.

But I do think it might cause a bit of confusion with the aunt. Is her name really Katherine or just Katie? Because maybe if your sister is officially Katherine, you should name your DD Kate, and if she's Katie, then Katherine for your daughter, just to differentiate them.

It's a great name, but I personally wouldn't choose it if my sister was Katie. It could just cause too much confusion in the family. Use it for a middle name and choose something else for the first one?

Leeds2 · 26/05/2014 18:53

I think Kate is a lovely name.

AmericasTorturedBrow · 26/05/2014 18:57

Love Kate, was in our top 3 for Dd but when she was born we decided it didn't quite suit her.

We would have had just Kate as well, it's lovely on it's own (DD has a shortened full name as her full name) and I wouldn't worry about the aunt...in my head anyway Kate and Katie are different names (hate Katie Wink)

CorporateRockWhore · 26/05/2014 18:59

We have a Kate and get so many nice comments about it!

I think alliteration can sound really nice too.

fatedtopretend · 26/05/2014 19:00

I absolutely LOVE Kate! If I wasn't named something sort of slightly similar dd would have been a Kate.

Goes with Cavendishesque type names well Smile

NigellasDealer · 26/05/2014 19:01

Kate is great my dd was very nearly Katie and it is fine on its own.

OverAndAbove · 26/05/2014 19:03

Love it - it's a nice straightforward but classy name that will never date

JamJimJam · 26/05/2014 19:05

I like it but the Kate Middleton thing would totally put me off.

Bowlersarm · 26/05/2014 19:06

There are lots of Kate's apart for Kate Middleton, what an odd comment.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 26/05/2014 19:13

Im glad it is being reveived so favourably. My DDs name is the shortest diminutive of Margaret, or the eldest March sister in Little Women.

I'm a Kate, so totally bias, but I think it is a good name (egotist)!!

I don't know why Kate Middleton would put one off as there are trillions of Kates doing all sorts of things. If I was your sis I would take it as a huge compliment!

notkate · 27/05/2014 08:55

Have nc for this just incase but I am a Kate and I love my name.

I hate Katherine and used to get annoyed when people asked if that was my real name. I don't understand people giving a full BC name for options.

OublietteBravo · 27/05/2014 09:11

notkate are you my sister? (Did/do you resent people called Kathrine shortening their name to Kate, because it "isn't really their name"?).

I think Kate is OK with a 'C' surname, and I wouldn't worry about having an Aunt called Katie either - I know quite a few children with the same names as an Aunt or Uncle.

MargotLovedTom · 27/05/2014 09:14

I think it would be fine to have dd Kate and aunt Katie and I don't think people would struggle to differentiate at all. They are different names.

In common with the tradition not all that long ago, my uncle had the exact same name as his dad (my grandad), and my brother has the exact same name as our dad. We've survived Grin.

RiverTam · 27/05/2014 09:15

Kate is a lovely name, I think these days it can stand alone. And you get to call her Bob for short.

BikeRunSki · 27/05/2014 09:17

Why not call her Katherine or Caitlin then you have billions of nick names to play with? I love Kitty for a baby.

MTWTFSS · 27/05/2014 09:18

Child: Kitty
Teen/Adult: Kate

Problem solved :)

notkate · 27/05/2014 09:30

Yes, maybe I do think that.

notkate · 27/05/2014 09:31

Grin RiverTam DH calls me Bob.
