Dougie, Gus or Ted?!

Hello. My husband and I can't reach a decision on a name for our son-to-be! The contenders are:

Gus (Angus full name)
Ted (Theodore or Edmund full name)
Dougie (pronounced 'Duggie - full name Douglas).

I like all these shortened versions, and we're both agreed that we don't want the shortened version on the baby's birth certificate. His middle name will be John, if that's any help. Opinions please!
Thank you Smile

Oh, tricky because they are all fabulous names!

As far as the full names go, I really like Douglas, Theodore and Edmund, but not so sure about Angus. What about Gus short for Fergus...?

Re the nicknames, there are quite a few baby Teddys and Teds around whereas Dougie and Gus will be much less common - if that sways you.

AnythingNotEverything · 20/05/2014 18:03

Ted. Especially if your surname is Logan Grin

But seriously, Ted.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 20/05/2014 18:06

Really love Douglas and Edmund.
Theodore/Ted/ Teddy is really popular in my area. (Not sure if popularity is an issue for you) I know 5 under 2 and my niece has 3 in her class at school!
Not so keen on Gus but quite like Angus.

Frorg · 20/05/2014 18:09

Dougie definitely

Leeds2 · 20/05/2014 18:10

I prefer Gus. Although not terribly keen on Angus.

Benchmark · 20/05/2014 18:17

Like theadore, dislike Edmund.
I actually quite like Douggie as it's so different.
Angus is nice too!
Hmm good names op!

I would probably go with Ted but that's probably the most boring of the options. If not, then Douglas!

forago · 20/05/2014 18:19

I like Angus and Gus the best

PunkAssMoFo · 20/05/2014 18:22

Angus or Douglas.
Ted has been overdone.

Montsti · 20/05/2014 18:36

I like Teddy but as a nn. For Edward. Not keen on Edmund and have an irrational dislike for Theo/Thea/Theodore..

Angus and Douglas not to my taste at all.

EyelinerQueen · 20/05/2014 18:38

Angus with Gus. Definitely.

If it had been Ned instead of Ted for Edmund that would have got my vote .

Bowlersarm · 20/05/2014 18:39

Like Angus, don't mind nn Gus

Like Ted (prefer Teddy) but really dislike Edmund

Dislike Douglas and Dougie

GlaikitFizzog · 20/05/2014 18:44

Angus!or Douglas. My first love was a Dougie!

SecretRed · 20/05/2014 18:49

Ted is my fave.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/05/2014 18:49

I like all the short names, not so keen on the long versions. I am also of the persuasion that you should put the long version on the birth certificate.

I like Gus/Angus best from the list overall. Also think Angus John sounds better than Theodore John or Douglas John.

I prefer Ed to Ted, and Edward to Edmund. Edmund really is Blackadder.

I'm not keen on Dougie / Douglas at all, they're a bit too old man.

Topsyloulou · 20/05/2014 18:50

I love ted, it's on my shortlist too but definitely Theodore rather than Edmund.

How about Dougal instead of Douglas? I like Dougie but it's one of DP's friends names so is out for us.

amyjaney1984 · 20/05/2014 18:50

Thanks all. Great help. Well we really don't want a common name and, by all accounts, it sounds like Ted is quite a popular name... So that leaves us with
Gus (Angus) or
Dougie (Douglas).

(We did like Fergus but my husband works with a Fergus so that ruled that out!)

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/05/2014 18:51

Why would it being a friend or colleague's name rule it out?

GlaikitFizzog · 20/05/2014 19:13

I vetoed a name I used to love because I worked with one. He was an arse and would have thought I was secretly in love with him if I named DS the same.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 20/05/2014 19:17

Ah yes, if they are an arse. I hadn't thought about the secretly in love aspect . We did inadvertently name DS after a hero footballer of the team I hate the most, which led to a bit of teasing at work.

Canshopwillshop · 20/05/2014 19:21

Ted is my favourite followed by Dougie. Not that keen on Gus.

florascotia · 20/05/2014 19:38

I second Dougal (or, even less usual, Dugald).

Then, however, Dougie would be pronounced 'Doo-gie', which may not be what you want.

I like Angus, too, but, as alternatives for short name 'Gus', as well as Fergus (which you say you can't use) there are also Magnus, Gustav/Gustavus and Augustus.

Rhubarbgarden · 20/05/2014 19:41

Gus! Biased though as I have one.

RiverTam · 20/05/2014 19:41

I like Douglas/Dougie

I like Teddy, but not so sure about Ted (Theodore and Edmund both good but as Ted is not the obvious short for either name, he may well end up called, by friends at any rate, Theo or Ed/Eddie)

I like Angus but can't bear Gus, Gus is a braying rugger-bugger living in Clapham.

I've never come across any children with this name and only one adult Angus.

squoosh · 20/05/2014 20:14

Gus is my favourite.

Ted reminds me of that idiot from How I Met Your Mother.

Dougie is just okay, I don't like it pronounced 'doogie', just 'duggie'.

redpickle · 20/05/2014 20:23

Personally don't like Dougie. My DH says he's "going for a Dougie" when he's off for a poo. Apparently its rhyming slang "Douglas Herd = terd". That might just be him though Blush
