Thoughts on Lavinia...love it or hate it??

At the moment it's our number one but I wanted to gauge your thoughts as I've never met or really heard of anyone with that name (besides the girl in Downton a few years back!). Its classic and unique which is what we're aiming for. Any thoughts or ideas very welcome! x

I've only ever come across one Lavinia and she was a cow! This probably puts me off the name slightly. I also think it's a bit fussy but if you like it then go for it - there are definitely worse names out there!

MadonnaKebab · 16/05/2014 13:34

Neither one nor t'other for me
Not bad, not stunning, same as many names
Why would you think love it or hate it were the likely options?

TheRedQueen · 16/05/2014 13:36

I love the sound of it but it always makes me think of the tragic Lavinia in Titus Andronicus

ToFollowJulie · 16/05/2014 13:38

I like it for an adult but couldn't imagine addressing a baby as Lavinia. Then the issue is how could you shorten it? Lavvy? Vinny? Perhaps that isn't an issue for you, though. If you love it, use it :)

funnyoldonion · 16/05/2014 13:39

Love it x

RabbitPies · 16/05/2014 13:40

I hate it. I think it's a very unattractive name.

burgatroyd · 16/05/2014 13:42

Its the lav bit that puts me off

jeee · 16/05/2014 13:43

It's a nice name - but a truly awful abbreviation.

OryxCrake · 16/05/2014 13:45

I agree that the likelihood of her being called Lavvy would be off-putting.

MrsBungle · 16/05/2014 13:46

I quite like it.

PuppyMonkey · 16/05/2014 13:47

It sounds like a name for a character in a gothic horror pisstake film to me . Confused

AnnieHoo · 16/05/2014 13:53

I went to school with a Lavinia and we called her Vinny which I like. She did get all the Lavvy jokes and squirmed with embarrassment at her name.

skinmysunshine · 16/05/2014 13:53

It reminds me of a flapper girl name in the same vein as Hadley, Zelda, Nancy, Diana etc.

It is nice but like others the short forms might put me off.

Floggingmolly · 16/05/2014 13:54

American trailer trash...

squoosh · 16/05/2014 14:21

The Lav part is really not attractive, it does make me think 'toilet'. Also it's a bit too frill-tastic for me.

Nunyabiz · 16/05/2014 14:26

Something about Lavinia makes me think Labia/Vagina. So no. Not a fan of vagina sounding names like Varinia, Virginia etc.

BiscuitCrumb · 16/05/2014 14:30

I've always thought Lavinia sounded a bit gynaecological... I know it isn't, but it just has that kind of sound.

meditrina · 16/05/2014 14:30

I think it's a lovely name, but the teasing potential of "Lav" as a nn would out me off.

But it's probably survivable as long as siblings aren't Lou or other toiletty names.

AP618 · 16/05/2014 14:31

Lol thanks everyone, going off it very quickly with all the comments! Guess that's what these threads are for! At least I've got 8 weeks left to ponder! x

Personally I don't like it sorry, but if you do that's all that matters!

Spottybra · 16/05/2014 14:53

I prefer Larissa but I like softer sounding names.

DontPutMeDownForCardio · 16/05/2014 15:00

I like it. Classic and beautiful. I'd use Liv or Livvy for short.

grendel · 16/05/2014 15:09

Hate it.
I've only know two Lavinias in real life: both older ladies and both pretty unpleasant.

BlueStarsAtNight · 16/05/2014 18:04

I like it in theory but couldn't actually bring myself to use it because of the toilet connotations.

LauraChant · 16/05/2014 18:09

I think of the character Lavinia in A Little Princess, who was the mean rich bully.
