Why does everyone hate Ellie so much?

Hello. I am an Eleanor nn Ellie. I've always loved both forms of my name but I always see on here that everyone hates the nn Ellie. I'm not offended I just wondered why? I don't know many children but I see that lots of people seem to prefer the nn Nell which personally I always hated as it sounds so frumpy! Just curious- is it the popularity? Has it become a bit chavvy? Honest answers- genuinely just curious!... X

It's probably because it rhymes with smelly. That's the sort of thing that seems to matter on the baby names board.

P3ppaPig · 16/05/2014 12:27

I don't hate it! I love it. My dd has your name and nn.

Mn has a weird way of seeming to 'gang' up on certain names. Just ignore Smile

MargotLovedTom · 16/05/2014 12:28

I've not seen anyone slating Ellie tbh. It's a perfectly ordinary, popular name.

BrianTheMole · 16/05/2014 12:29

I like it.

RabbitPies · 16/05/2014 12:35

I don't like it because it's so overused that it's almost the stereotpical 2010s girls name to me,along with Ava. Like Finn and Alfie for boys. I'm also generally not a fan of names beginning with the 'el' sound, though Eleanor is my exception. It's beautiful.

RunnerHasbeen · 16/05/2014 12:35

I don't think they hate it, just people are usually wanting something a bit different when they come on these boards and there are quite a lot of popular names shortened to Ellie (which is also popular itself).

skinmysunshine · 16/05/2014 12:38

I think Eleanor is a lovely name but for me it is too popular. I've always disliked it when I've worked with people with the same name as me and I've been xxxxx T rather than just xxxx so I didn't want that for my DCs.

Funnily enough I like my own name when I see it written down but hate the way it sounds.

PaulinesPen · 16/05/2014 12:40

I know lots of lovely Elly/Ellies (dd seems to know quite a few). I think Eleanor is very elegant though and think (to myself of course) that I would prefer to insist on the full version of it if it were me/my dd's name. Haven't seen anyone saying it's not a nice name Confused. Very popular now though.

ApocalypseNowt · 16/05/2014 12:41

I don't hate it but agree it's very popular. Depends if that sort of thing bothers you or not. If not, go for it!

mayihaveaboxofchoculaits · 16/05/2014 12:42

Eleanor is lovely,classy,has a history.
Ellie is really overused, and (maybe this is only my experience)unfortunately scream, Meangirls.

Sorry.

wonkylegs · 16/05/2014 12:44

I don't dislike it but I think I'd avoid it as there seems to be a lot of
Ella, Ellie, Bella, Issy, Eva, Ava etc about amongst our friend's kids

Montsti · 16/05/2014 13:08

I like it as a nn. For Eleanor, Eliana etc...

I agree that it does get slated a lot on here. Is it really that widespread and does that really matter? Each to their own, I suppose...

ILoveCoreyHaim · 16/05/2014 13:13

DD2 has 5 Ellies in her class. Must have been very popular in 2004. I don't hate it

SantasLittleMonkeyButler · 16/05/2014 13:13

For some, it'll be because it's popular and for others because it ends in an 'ee' sound.

Neither seem well received on MN. There always seems to be a thread where someone is asking for opinions on Poppy/Rosie/Holly etc. etc. and being told something along the lines of "too popular, too twee - how about Muriel or Agatha?" Hmm.

IME at least (maybe it's geographical), MN baby name threads in no way reflect RL.

squoosh · 16/05/2014 13:15

It's a nice name just a bit overused at the moment.

SquirrelledAway · 16/05/2014 13:28

The nicest girl I've ever met is called Ellie, and there certainly aren't many Ellies around where I am.

Pobblewhohasnotoes · 16/05/2014 13:41

I don't hate it, but it's incredibly over used at the minute. I work with kids and it seems like very five minutes we get in another Ellie-Mae.

picnicbasketcase · 16/05/2014 13:43

I like it, it's a nice name. The reason names get popular is because a lot of people like them, so someone saying they don't like it because too many other people do is rather odd.

I don't hate it but it's just so common and that puts me off. It's very cutesy and, to me, blurs into a big homogenous group with Evie, Izzy, etc. it's certainly not horrible though. I really like Eleanor.

squoosh · 16/05/2014 14:00

'The reason names get popular is because a lot of people like them, so someone saying they don't like it because too many other people do is rather odd.'

I disagree. If that were the case no name would ever fall out of fashion.

burgatroyd · 16/05/2014 14:08

Overused

StampyIsMyBoyfriend · 16/05/2014 14:14

I'm put off by how harsh it sounds in a Scottish accent, a lot like Lily, which is a lovely 'soft' name, but can be ruined by certain accents.

(I'm Scottish btw)

It's also quite common here, which puts me off, along with abby/abbi/abi

MagnaCharge · 16/05/2014 14:15

I used to teach a girl called Ellie except it was spelt Elle and her mum went absolutely mad at me the first day of term when I called her Elle. I shall never forget being told 'you shouldn't be a teacher if you can't even read a simple name'

MagnaCharge · 16/05/2014 14:16

For the record I am not a teacher, I am a TA but to a lot of parents in classroom equals teacher. I can read though.
