Why does everyone hate Ellie so much?

Hello. I am an Eleanor nn Ellie. I've always loved both forms of my name but I always see on here that everyone hates the nn Ellie. I'm not offended I just wondered why? I don't know many children but I see that lots of people seem to prefer the nn Nell which personally I always hated as it sounds so frumpy! Just curious- is it the popularity? Has it become a bit chavvy? Honest answers- genuinely just curious!... X

Think from website called upswing if you interested.

MargotLovedTom · 17/05/2014 14:36

I know an Ella Lily which is a very tongue flappy name imo.

Nocomet · 17/05/2014 14:44

Nothing wrong with it at all except that DDs friends could be Eleanor, Ellie (the other Eleanor) and Elsie, instead if 3xEllie and know which one she was talking about Confused

DavidArchersBoa · 17/05/2014 14:53

"Eleanor is beautiful but sadly Ellie is over used and twee."

I think jayney you missed off the bit about that being your opinion.

I hate MN baby names thread forthis reason alone. So many really strong opinions stated as absolute fact by people who seem to forget that there are people here thinking of using the name, have used the name, or are CALLED the name. It's so fucking rude

DavidArchersBoa · 17/05/2014 14:57

Serioisly. we all have prefernecsa bout names but I wouldn't march up to someone in RL and say "The name you've given your baby is overused and twee and btw I'm not fond of your name eiether - it's a dog's name"

So I don't see why we can't be a little more restrained here

divingoffthebalcony · 17/05/2014 15:01

It's just one of those names that's been SO popular for SO many years it just sounds a bit nondescript to me.

squoosh · 17/05/2014 15:01

I really can't see that anyone has said anything too outrageous, just that they're not crazy about the name. And that's fair enough.

SpamTroll · 17/05/2014 15:03

I like it. I can't see it as a name that would evoke hatred Confused

DavidArchersBoa · 17/05/2014 15:06

Eleanor is beautiful but sadly Ellie is over used and twee.

Yes, it's become such an overused name that people are getting bored of hearing it.

I don't like it because it's so overused that it's almost the stereotpical 2010s girls name to me,

Ellie is really overused, and (maybe this is only my experience)unfortunately scream, Meangirls.

I don't hate it but it's just so common and that puts me off. It's very cutesy and, to me, blurs into a big homogenous group with Evie, Izzy, etc

Overused

Would you say any of those things to anyone in RL squoosh, about something as personal as their choice of name for their DC?

Yes, I admit this thread has been pretty mild by comparison to some name threads - but that's hardly a ringing endorsement is it? "Well it could have been a lot more vicious!"

CarCiKoTab · 17/05/2014 15:14

My midwife with my second birth was called Ellie, she spent most of the time whilst I was labouring/Giving birth trying it on with my other half, therefore that has tarnished the name for me although I would doubt I would judge just because of a name. It just put me off using it for my own children.

squoosh · 17/05/2014 15:14

No I wouldn't say those things in real life but the whole point of these threads is that people can find out what people actually think of a name beyond the polite 'that's lovely' reaction that is the right thing to do in real life.

I do think you're taking this a bit too personally.

dementedma · 17/05/2014 15:15

Love this thread. My Ellen is known as Ellie and it suits her. She will be 21 this year faints so I think we were ahead of the pack.
Also known as jelly-belly, ell-well, the Ellster....and chickpea!!

Psst we have a Rosie too!!! (She's 23!) She is mostly known as Dodies from when Ds first tried to say her name and that was the closest he could get.

People probably think my kids have bizarre names when I call them Dodies and Chickpea in public.Grin

squoosh · 17/05/2014 15:16

If I met a baby Humphrey I would think 'bloody hell, poor kid' but I wouldn't say that to his parents as that would be rude. I'd continue to think it was an awful name though.

HowYaLikeThemApples · 17/05/2014 15:22

My DD is called Eleanor and I absolutely adore it. She also gets called Ellie which I think is lovely too. What's important is what my DD and OUR family think of her name and nicknames, not anybody else. They're welcome to think it's over-used and twee, but we love it and that's all that matters.

DavidArchersBoa · 17/05/2014 15:24

Not at all squoosh. I'm actually sitting in the garden with a beer feeling rather relaxed. My posts come over a bit more aerated (sp?) than I am.

Just baby threads on MN give me the heeby geebies

DavidArchersBoa · 17/05/2014 15:25

And the reason I commented is because the MNer who started the thread is called this name!

insanityscatching · 17/05/2014 15:39

I like it, there were lots of Ellie's around here when dd1 and ds3 were born so about 20 years ago but it's rare to hear it nowadays in this area.

MammaGnomes · 17/05/2014 15:51

Could you use Ellie as a nn for Eliza. not sure I want to give her a nn but if I did I quite like Ellie or Ella

JamJimJam · 17/05/2014 15:56

I don't hate it but I would avoid it like the plague as it is so very common. My children's primary classes were full of Ellies, Millies & Mollies.

I really love Nell though; even though it's the name of my dog I had as a child.

pimple · 17/05/2014 16:52

No Ellie's in my daughters school (200+) kids!

I think people are snobby and rude to say they do not like it. You did not choose your name!

My daughter has a name that was not popular but has become so several years after we called her it and we love the name.

Popular names are such because they are lovely.

MN PEOPLE CAN BE SUCH SNOBS AND SAY THINGS THEY WOULD NEVER SAY TO PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE!

Much better to be called something like Ellie than some of the more 'individual' names people sometimes aspire to on here that quite frankly are ridiculous IMO.....

No one said 'hate'. I don't think people feel strongly enough about it to hate it...........

burgatroyd · 17/05/2014 17:38

Agree with swoosh. Besides this is mumsnet not RL and the op asked a question. It is interesting to note that there are two live threads on mn where the op likes a name but is worried it will be shortened to Ellie (Elodie and Eleanor and Theodore thread).

I have a dd with an el name so its entirely possible that she will be joining the Ellies!

David can understand your angst. My other dd has what one mumsnetter deemed a my little pony name. I love it and I hope she will too.

In fact though Ellie is overused I prefer it to a lot of vintage names which sound rather clunky. But that's just my opinion.

divingoffthebalcony · 17/05/2014 17:47

People do like to get overly offended and uppity on the Baby Names section.

Look: you ask for opinions and you get opinions. Sometimes harsh ones. There's no need to get so butthurt on someone else's behalf.

My daughter has a name that has been called an ugly old lady name on here before. And that doesn't bother me in the slightest, because I love her name and the reason I chose it. The opinion of some stranger on Mumsnet doesn't hurt my feelings in the slightest.
