What do you all think of the name Dexter?

Not for another generation, I'm afraid.

TheHoundsBitch · 09/05/2014 08:11

I love it, we've earmarked it for the next DC!

HannahLaRouge · 09/05/2014 08:18

My six month old's name :)

Scotinoz · 09/05/2014 10:02

Makes me think Dexter Fletcher from Press Gang (possibly showing my age with that one), and more recently Dexter Morgan serial killer...

Sorry - it's a cool name though if you can pull it off.

yellowsnownoteatwillyou · 09/05/2014 10:09

It was my second choice for my ds, I will use it if we get ds2, my first ds has a very unusual name so would need to do the same but worried dexter might become popular.

BobPatandIgglePiggle · 09/05/2014 10:11

Love it and it was on our list but lots of people associated it woth the serial killer.

I never watched it though so didn't get the hype

PetaPipa · 09/05/2014 10:48

Dexter is in the top 100 now so is definitely not too out there any more. But probably will become more popular. Might be a consideration if you are bothered about that.

JapaneseMargaret · 09/05/2014 11:00

It's the sort of name that could go either way, really

You can see it totally suiting a 30-something, Don Draper-esque partner in a magic circle firm ... and a flabby and hirsute 50-year old gent, with questionable personal hygiene and an unrelenting gaming habit.

You'd have to really hope for the former.

JRmumma · 09/05/2014 11:04

I quite like the name but the fact that its the new 'i want to give my child an unusual name' name would put me off of using it.

squoosh · 09/05/2014 11:06

It's a bit 'offspring of soap star' for me.

StrawberryGashes · 09/05/2014 12:14

I like it, and it can't be too unusual if it's in the top 100 list.

Plateofcrumbs · 09/05/2014 15:05

Thanks for the replies. I really like the name but DH has vetoed it due to the 'serial killer' connection. I've never watched the show and for me it doesn't have that link at all so was curious to see how many other people jump to the TV show connection (I'm with you Scotinoz, it still reminds me of Press Gang though Grin )

I mean it's not like I want to call my child Hannibal is it? Confused

Dexter Fletcher is fictional too Smile. The show has just about finished; wasn't massive in the UK, and will be irrelevant to your son's generation.

squoosh · 09/05/2014 15:15

No Dexter Fletcher is the actor's name, think his character on Press Gang was called Spike.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 09/05/2014 15:32

If DH nixed that how about Rex instead?

StrawberryGashes · 09/05/2014 16:18

I loved the Dexter show, but every time I hear the name that's not what I think about, I think about this guy instead;

Dexter
SquirrelledAway · 09/05/2014 16:25

Martin Luther King named one of his sons Dexter.

Pointeshoes · 09/05/2014 16:26

Not keen myself but what about Daxon or Declan

felinesad · 09/05/2014 16:34

Absolutely love Dexter and wanted it for DS2 however was always met with horrified looks by anyone I mentioned it to and DP vetoed it completely.

Still love it though.

notso · 09/05/2014 16:38

I love it.

Plateofcrumbs · 09/05/2014 17:14

I'm really keen on names that work in the same way as Daniel/Danny/Dan or Samuel/Sammy/Sam in terms of their derivatives - a perfectly solid full name, which can be shortened in both a cute way and a more matey way (so I was going for Dexter/Dexy/Dex).

Neither Daniel or Samuel are options (not because I don't like the names, just have too close connections to family and friends)

Love it and love Dex as a nn

littleballerina · 09/05/2014 20:10

I know three under four dexters. Lovely name

Plateofcrumbs · 09/05/2014 20:45

You're convincing me to try to persuade DH Wink

sooperdooper · 09/05/2014 20:50

I really like it :)

People who mention the tv series - it'll be completely forgotten about in a year or so anyway so I don't think that would be a reason not to use it
