Do you like the name Clementine? Also, what do you think of the nn Clemmie? Thanks in advance for opinions.

Beautiful name and nick name. Absolutely love it.

I know one Clementine, she is now about 25 years old.

Winnie101 · 28/04/2014 17:17

Thanks Mintyy!

I have known a three over the years and it is a timeless, pretty name. Was on my list! Love the nn too.

Fevertree · 28/04/2014 17:45

I absolutely love it and dd would have been a clemmie if dh had agreed!

Winnie101 · 28/04/2014 17:51

Great, thanks sundae and fever.

Do people think its set to become more popular now? I just wonder why it isn't more popular already... It made me question whether some people don't like it.

I think a lot of people do like it but don't have the confidence to actually choose it in the end and opt for more popular/common choices. It is a lovely name.

SuperScrimper · 28/04/2014 19:03

People don't like it because its difficult for an adult, it's very frilly and doesn't sound that grown up. Not many people like Clemmie. It's gives 'Clammy Clemmie' and 'Plegmy Clemmie' and fundamentally because its a fruit and to most people sounds as bad as calling your child banana.

I love love love it.
Strongly suspect DP doesn't. Think he thought I was joking when it was raised...

Ha fevertree, just RTWT and ditto!

girliefriend · 28/04/2014 19:05

I like Clementine but don't like Clemmie - that makes me think plegmy as well - sorry.

What about Constantine? I do like Connie Smile

Kantha · 28/04/2014 19:07

Sorry, I'm not keen. I think SuperScrimper has just about summed up my thoughts on it.

Sundaedelight · 28/04/2014 19:10

FWIW none of the Clementines/Clemmies that I have known have EVER been called Clammie/plegmy. It's some strange leap that some may make if they are unfamiliar with the name. Don't let it put you off if you love the name. I think Clementine Churchill carried it off rather well!

peppinagiro · 28/04/2014 19:12

I wouldn't pick it, for SuperScrimper's reasons. It's a nice noise, and I like the way it looks written down, but it's the fact that it's a fruit that puts me off. I don't like names that are actually everyday words for things, generally (so no nature names for me). And Clemmie makes me think of clammy. No girl wants to be clammy.

ThursdayLast · 28/04/2014 19:13

Yes sundae that's who I think of.

HolidayCriminal · 28/04/2014 19:20

I don't like it at all. NNs just as bad. Twee old fashioned?

Shallan · 28/04/2014 19:25

It just makes me think of the song, sorry. I don't think I could meet a clementine without starting to sing it I'm afraid

Winnie101 · 28/04/2014 21:23

Thanks everyone, I really wanted honest opinions. I think clammy in relation to Clemmie but wondered whether it was just me; obviously not! Thanks again.

I know three Clementines, seems to be growing in popularity.

Winnie101 · 29/04/2014 03:58

Interesting appletini. How old are the Clementines you know?

OP posts:
lubitons · 29/04/2014 04:07

I have a Clementine, it definitely is a hate it or love it name, though I'd say we get mostly positive reactions to it. She hasn't been called Clemmie by anyone (yet.) We don't call the fruit clementines where I live so that was never an issue. I did expect people to bring up the song all the time to be honest, but it's only come up once.

Agree with super scrimper, however do like nn Banana, like writer Banana Yoshimoto of Kitchen. The cle sound is like clearing your throat

deepinthewoods · 29/04/2014 07:14

God no- it's a fruit. Bit like calling a child turnip.

fidelineish · 29/04/2014 07:25

If you are worried about puerile fruit-based puns, there is always Clemency/Clemence.

The whole clammy/phlegmy thing seems unlikely to me (not really the normal vocab of 5 year old bullies).

Appletini · 29/04/2014 07:32

The ones I know are aged 0-3.
