I'm going to totally out myself here as it's an unusual name but oh well!

We called our daughter Nola Matilda. When she was born it was a choice between Orla or Nola and OH preferred Nola, he went home from hospital and told his mum who then announced on facebook that her name was Nola..I just went with it, at the time I really liked it.

Another name which I LOVED was Tabitha but a few people put me off by the old "it's a cats name how awful" comments.

I have recently found out my mum and aunt dislike the name Nola and wished I called her Tabitha. I am now wishing I had called her Orla Tabitha. Or at least Orla as a first name. I think about this every day....what to do?! OH says he likes all the names and doesn't care.

It would be really weird to change it now when she is nearly a year old, right?!

Also, prepare to have to explain it all to random acquaintances who will think you are odd / flaky / both

bewellnell · 05/04/2014 10:17

I AM odd and flaky. Can't you tell?!

It's because of Beatrix Potter Tabitha Twitchet the tabby cat I think.

Plus the whole Tabby = Tabby cat thing on it's own.

Nola is the name you gave her - end of. Mathilda is nice. If you don't like Nola why can't you just call her Mathilda/Tilly. Much prefer Mathilda to Tabitha.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 05/04/2014 10:30

I like Tabitha and Matilda.

Absolutely hate Nola. It sounds made up, middle aged- sounds like Sheila, or like some sort of acronym for something.

So I would absolutely change to Tabitha Nola Matilda.

I don't see it as you changing because of your mum, rather changing BACK after being put off by your MIL! Tabitha was your first choice so go with that.

we had a similar issue with dd5 dh liked one name which i hated ,i liked another . in the end we called her dh's preferred choice . her mn was a compromise name and my preferred option . so 2 mns .
i continued hate the name the name she was given could barely use it . often used an unrelated nn . i dreaded people asking her name and felt awful and close to tears when her name was called out in public eg at the gp or hv .
i really did try to love the name she was given because it was her name but really failed .
finally when she was 9 months old ds4 then aged 4 sat in the bath and said "mummy and daddy , she is not x (dh's choice) or y(my choice) but z the compromise name It's a beautiful name for a beautiful baby ."

following that we began to use this compromise name as her new name . we did get many questions from people as to why we'd done it . I'm sure many thought we are completely mad .
nearly 3 years on some people vaguely remember we changed her name but many have forgotten . all those who do remember we changed it ,can't remember what name she was previously .
As far as she is concerned she is now 4 her new name is her name and she loves it and has no memory of her other name .
changing her name is the best thing we did . however , just a word of warning if you do change it may still worry for a short time that you have done the right thing but that will pass .
we have not yet changed her bc as we are just using her mn as her first name . we are in Scotland so bc s can be changed up to age 16 . i want her to be old enough to make her own decision as to whether she wants to change her name on her bc
fwiw i like both Tabitha and nola but prefer Tabitha as it's dd3's name . i also think Matilda ,i would have loved to call dd5 it but dh vetoed it .
good luck whatever you decide

Our Tabitha is known as T. No one calls her Tabby. A couple of people have called her Tabs and we'd originally planned to shorten it to Abi.
It doesn't have to shorten to Tabby!

MyFabulousBoys · 05/04/2014 10:48

Oh goodness just change it if you are so unhappy with it.. But only if YOU AND YOUR DH WANT IT not because your mum and mil want you to. I much prefer tabitha by the way.

You may get a few comments but who cares? Your baby. Do it now. Don't wait any longer. And if you are going to change you may as well go the whole hog and change it all to your preferred ones. Not compromise with just a single name change.

vichill · 05/04/2014 10:49

I would rather be called Nola. Very pretty. Your plan to add tabitha as her first name is sound. It gives family and ultimately her the choice.

Ludways · 05/04/2014 10:52

I much prefer Nola to Tabitha fwiw.

I think Nola is beautiful & elegant & imagine when she is an adult. I think it's gorgeous & different. Tabitha does remind me of a cat.

squoosh · 05/04/2014 14:18

Nola reminds me of the Nolan Sisters.

heymatilda · 05/04/2014 15:58

Nola is beautiful and more elegant and interesting than Tabitha.

As you can see from this forum names are so subjective and not everyone's going to love the same. I hated what my sister chose for her son when he was born but now, 7 years later, I love it because it totally suits him and I love him. I'm sure your family will feel the same about Nola. Smile
