What do you think of Roderick?

I feel like I must be missing something- it's a recognisable name, so not too 'out there' but never gets mentioned. Roddie as NN quite cute (imho) and I can't think of any negative connotations? (although I dislike Rod Stewart...would that immediately come to mind?) Judge Roderick Blah works doesn't it Wink Would you th associate with being Scottish? Any thoughts gratefully received.

Random 'th' - apologies.

Thing is, it would get shortened to Rod. Then people would think Rodney. Then plonker.

Judge Roderick would work, yes. But you're never going to be able to stop it become Rod. And before it becomes Rod, it will be Rodders.

somedizzywhore1804 · 03/04/2014 06:45

It's not my cup of tea, but equally I don't think it's terrible. I would say it's VERY Scottish though- in the vein of Angus etc- so this may be a consideration if you aren't Scottish.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 03/04/2014 06:47

Wouldn't associate it with being Scottish no.

I know Rod Stewart is, (I think) but I see him as one of those Professional Scotsmen anyway.

YourHandInMyHand · 03/04/2014 06:49

I associate it with that scene in The Life of Brian "fwee woderick" which makes me laugh. Not my cup of tea as a name TBH.

Monkeyandanimal · 03/04/2014 07:14

Life of Brian, but actually i do rather like it. Could be Rick for short.

Meglet · 03/04/2014 07:19

Life of Brian for me too.

It's a nice name though.

sarahquilt · 03/04/2014 07:47

Not crazy about it.

treaclesoda · 03/04/2014 07:51

I know an adult Roderick and he is an absolute gentleman, so as always with these things, it makes the name sound much nicer to me than it would if he was horrible!

No one ever shortens his name, he always gets his full name.

mummybare · 03/04/2014 07:51

I think Life of Brian too - sorry! Roddie/Roddy is sweet though and I like Roddy Doyle's books.

TheSteveMilliband · 03/04/2014 07:54

It's lovely! Roddy very cute and if you're happy with that don't see that it would be shortened any more to rod (which isn't bad anyway). He could be Roderick for Sundays / job interviews (or when in trouble). Also a bit different but not wacky. I'm thinking Roddy frame from Aztec camera

Endymion · 03/04/2014 07:54

Welease woderick!

Sorry - another life of Brian one.

I'm usually ok with pronouncing 'r' but find Roderick hard.

tznett · 03/04/2014 09:11

To me it sounds a bit wet and pompous.

RabbitPies · 03/04/2014 09:20

Honestly? Wewease Wodewick!

I don't like it. It's a very unattractive name.

PrimalLass · 03/04/2014 09:22

We are in Scotland. DD has a Roddy
in her class. It is cute.

squoosh · 03/04/2014 10:24

I don't like it.

ceeveebee · 03/04/2014 11:26

I have a Roderick, nn Roddy, and of course I love the name. He's never been called Rod or Rodney yet (but then he's only 2.4) although my DM did suggest that Robbie would be a better alternative...

aGirlDownUnder1 · 03/04/2014 11:27

It reminds of that character from Diary of the Wimpy Kid. I'm not keen on it

aGirlDownUnder1 · 03/04/2014 11:29

*me

JRmumma · 03/04/2014 11:29

I like it. But then i wanted to name DS Rodney so i might be in the minority.

MaryPoppinsBag · 03/04/2014 11:33

Annoying big brother of The Wimpy Kid.

MrsMopOnTop · 03/04/2014 12:33

Wewease Woderick! - Life of Brian.

Also it would get shortened to Rod, Roddy or Ricky ... all a bit O.o

toastedteacake · 03/04/2014 12:35

It's a lovely classic name and is in most generations.

I know at least three in different generations; a friend's father, a great uncle and someone my own age.

MrRected · 03/04/2014 12:38

Another one who immediately thinks wewease wodwick!!!

I think it falls short of granny chic - if that's your sort of thing it misses the mark IMO.

MrsMarigold · 03/04/2014 12:42

Love it.
