I have suddenly decided that I love this name above all others and frankly don't care what DP thinks on the matter.

The only weensy hitch is I'm not sure about the assonance that exists when it's used with my surname: Enid Stephens.

Thoughts?

You can tell me your thoughts on Enid too, if you like. Though I shan't listen to you unless you are wholly positive about it, obviously. Wink

Also you clearly have excellent taste in names, care to share some boys name choices? I really struggle with boys names!

HSMMaCM · 19/03/2014 09:50

I love Enid. I had a great aunt Enid and she was lovely (wonders why it wasn't on my list).

oldbutnotpastit · 19/03/2014 11:50

can i throw gladys ( love this but dh vetoed it and suggested it was the hormones) or winifred into the mix both have a similar feel to enid imvho

MerryMarigold · 19/03/2014 11:54

Don't like Enid. Don't like Edna. Don't like Mavis.

The 'd' and the 'st' are quite hard - you wouldn't want to say it over and over very quickly!

So there!

Burren · 19/03/2014 12:15

Enid Stephens goes perfectly well, and Enid is cool. Enid is the kind of girl who can read hieroglyphics and save the world on her lunchbreak while wearing designer glasses.

And I have never understood why anyone feels sibling names should 'match' - that's just weird, like they're a floral three-piece suite or something.

MerryMarigold · 19/03/2014 12:25

I know 3 brothers called Ricky, Eli and Donny. Now, tell me Eli isn't the odd one out here!

But anyway, does Enid have a sib yet?

MerryMarigold · 19/03/2014 12:28

Oh, yes, I see Agnes. I love Agnes. I hate Enid. Enid will always be jealous of Agnes' name (which imo, is pretty, soft and sweet). You can't say Enid without a slight whine. Not sure why.

MerryMarigold · 19/03/2014 12:28

[Ramona and Margot are great, if you care about my opinion]

StormyBrid · 19/03/2014 12:36

I've never been keen on Enid, but Enid Marian Stephens... I like it! My grandma was an Enid, and has always threatened to come back to haunt anyone who named a daughter after her. So I say go for it, but have the number for the Ghostbusters on standby just in case.

squoosh · 19/03/2014 12:37

Margot is gorgeous.

Enid wears support stockings, goes on brass rubbing holidays and is having a not very torrid affair with Clive who is the chair of the local Rotary Club. She spends her days thinking up ways to bump off Clive's wife Marjorie.

SisterChristina · 19/03/2014 13:02

Really don't like Enid. Short and hard, and seems like going for a granny name just for the sake of it.

I've known loads of grannies/ great grannies called Enid and never once has anyone said 'wow, what a beautiful name'!

Dh has just said it sounds too much like 'penis', fwiw!

I guess if a girl was incredibly, incredibly cool she would be able to carry it off but that's quite a gamble.

Burren · 19/03/2014 13:11

But squoosh, Margot is practically Margo, and the missing 't' is the difference between Margot 'exquisite ballerina' Fonteyn and the queen of Oldies and Irish, Daniel O'Donnell's big sister, and a lot of unwise eyeshadow.

hunreeeal · 19/03/2014 14:37

It's also practically Maggot.

I'm afraid that I think "Enid" is bordering on child abuse cruelty.

IHeartKingThistle · 19/03/2014 15:48

Ethel sounds ugly. Enid doesn't.

vivatregina · 19/03/2014 15:51

There is a girl called Enid in my daughter MARTHA's class - she is known as Nid Nod.

BalloonSlayer · 19/03/2014 15:52

Never tell her you were going to call her Ramona but decided on Enid instead.

She will hate you forever.

My mum has a name similar to Enid (it has been mentioned on this thread). She hates it so much and is embarrassed to tell people what her name is. She has felt like this - through many changing fashions - for over 80 years. Careful about possibly making your DD feel like that just so that strangers on the internet think you are cool.

jellybeans · 19/03/2014 15:54

too old-fashioned

pilates · 19/03/2014 16:02

Sorry it's awful

Burren · 19/03/2014 16:25

But names previously considered 'old lady' are terribly chic these days. I've met babies called Ursula, Violet, Maud, Ethel, Edna and Elsie-May (the last three are not triplets, though it looks like it when you write them together) in the last few years. And quite a few Ediths.

They're not massively to my personal taste - though the lack of frilliness is nice - but 'Enid' is hardly way out in that company, or excessively elderly.

sandberry · 19/03/2014 17:47

Enid is great and goes perfectly with Agnes
Love Ramona but don't think it goes with Agnes at all, completely different styles.
Stick with Enid, it will be top 100 in 10 years anyhow and all the haters will love it.

Bluestocking · 19/03/2014 19:40

I've written you a poem, OP:

Not Ellie, not Lily
Not Mia, Maia, Maya
Not Roxy, not Jasmine
Not Scarlett, not Keira

Not Ottolie, not Cecily
Not Bryony, not Melody
Not Clementine, not Madeleine.
Agnes and Enid.

I absolutely love the name Enid. It sounds perfectly fine with your surname. Lovely strong name, go for it!
