Wondering what names would go well with Percy, for a boy. I don't like names that are common and I don't like way out there names. I'm more a old man kind of baby namer... Thanks in advance for suggestions Wink

Horace. I think Horry would be a cute nickname.

BNmum I don't know how to post a link but look at britishbabynames.com it is a fantastic blog and where I found the boys names from 1900. I just picked out the ones that didn't seem to have been mentioned. At the top of the list were the usual suspects William, John, Thomas etc. I saw Lawrence and assumed it must've been posted already. Percy and Larry don't sound so good together IMO though. Larry is too soft against Percy.

Raymond? Rex is a great one!

HoneyandRum · 08/03/2014 06:49

On the front page of her blog the author shows names on the upswing - those that have gained popularity in the last few years. Ronnie, Reg and Rex are all on the upswing and I'm not surprised as I love them all! I think we have been missing "R" names for a while so the sound feels fresher and quite strong. I would put Victor and Ray in this category for the emphasis on the "R".

HoneyandRum · 08/03/2014 06:52

Can someone please post to the blog and hopefully to the 1900 list on there? Thank you Smile

BNmum · 08/03/2014 08:00

Thanks honey, britishbabynames is my favourite name blog. I'm on there so often I should know he whole thing off by heart. I'm having to wean myself off it though as DH hates it (he's a top 20 man) and he says its feeding my eccentric taste. It's my guilty treat at weekends and guess what it's the Weekend!

Sorry to hijack thread op but you are getting some great suggestions on here.

"don't like to sheep though I'd rather my child was an individual"

Grin

So joining the flock of old man names will ensure that, will it? Don't worry, your child will be an individual even if he shares a name with 6 other children in his class- children are like that!

Burren · 10/03/2014 09:51

I had the same name as four other girls in my life all through primary school, and it was a bit grim, to be honest. Not from the UK, and in the 70s there was a smallish, conservative pool of names, so it wasn't just my class, the damn name was everywhere. To this day, if an Irish novelist wants a generic name for a minor forty-something female character, that's the one they go for.

I did choose a name for my son in part on the grounds of its unusualness, as a result.

OP, why choose something to 'go with' Percy? Siblings aren't some kind of matching teaser. I have only one child, but if he had had a sibling, I would have wanted an entirely different 'style' of name.

Cornelius. Augustus (Gus). Thornton.

Burren · 10/03/2014 09:52

Four other girls in my class, not in my life!

Ikeameatballs · 10/03/2014 21:23

LadyDowager, yes! Newcastle. I think it is the same family. R and P are the parents?

LadyDowagerHatt · 10/03/2014 21:36

IkeaMeatballs yes, that's them! How funny. I wonder if we know eachother, I will PM you!
