Sanity Check on Name

dopeydee · 24/01/2014 14:33

Hi there,

I need a sanity check on my absolute favourite girls name: Evelyn. Perfect because she can be Evie as a baby, Eve as a teenager/adult and Evelyn when she is old. A classic name that will grow with her...

... however my name is Dawn and my partner thinks there is a certain amount of vanity involved in the naming (Dawn and Eve both being times of the day). He is likening it to Dawn Jr. Also the baby is due around my birthday, July. So we may share a birthday as well.

We don't even know what sex we are having yet, but I just wanted to check the general opinion before sticking to my guns..

Thanks in advance

Ignore him, think he's over thinking things so stick to your guns!

ShadowFall · 24/01/2014 14:37

I suppose the names have a similar theme, but I don't think they're close enough for it to look like you've named the baby after yourself.

MarysDressSways · 24/01/2014 14:38

I very much doubt anyone would make that connection, and even if they did, it's so tenuous that it can be ignored.

It is a beautiful name and that is a VERY silly reason not to use it.

ChristineDaae · 24/01/2014 19:48

Wouldn't have even occurred to me. If you like it go for it

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 24/01/2014 19:56

Wow that is SOME overthinking!!

Does he just not like Evelyn??

Minnieisthedevilmouse · 24/01/2014 20:18

Ok. So throwing logic back... If you were called Sarah would that veto any name vaguely connected to religion or the bible?

Certainly good for a short list. What's he like?

Confitdecanard · 24/01/2014 20:21

I would never have noticed! It's lovely.

pickledsiblings · 24/01/2014 20:25

beautiful name, evening is the time of day, not Eve

BabyMummy29 · 24/01/2014 20:28

It's a nice name and quite unusual these days. In 30 years of teaching I have just had my first Evelyn as a pupil.

Unfortunately she came from England where it is pronounced Eevelyn and gets quite stroppy as in Scotland it's pronounced with an e sounds as in egg.

Annianni · 24/01/2014 20:28

Lovely name. Ignore your dp.

BaileysOnRocks · 24/01/2014 20:29

Such a beautiful name. Nobody will make that connection. Go for it!

NadiaWadia · 24/01/2014 20:30

It you were calling her Aurora he might have a point, but even then it would sound completely different to Dawn, and most people would not make the connection. As it is, he is being a bit ridiculous.

I knew an Alicia who named her daughter Alice and I don't think anyone commented!

HoratiaDrelincourt · 24/01/2014 20:30

He's overthinking.

But Eve-/Ava names have been really popular for a few years so you need to think about how happy you'd be for her to be Evelyn Initial in her class, and possibly sound dated (the Tracey or Kylie of her generation).

Bowlersarm · 24/01/2014 20:30

Overthinking. It's fine.

CollieEye · 24/01/2014 20:34

One of my best friends' DD is Evelyn. Pronounced Ev-Lin not Eve-Lin. Her friends used to correct their teacher in reception who kept getting it wrong!

I love the name. I love the child!

eurochick · 24/01/2014 20:46

I know sisters called Dawn and Eve and that never occurred to me! I think it is a lovely name.

JabberJabberJay · 24/01/2014 20:49

He's overthinking it. Evelyn is a beautiful name.

potterpaint · 25/01/2014 09:52

That's a bit mean of him. There are a LOT of Evies around. Still love the name though.

Flechas · 25/01/2014 10:11

I like that! Dawn and Eve!

The baby gets his sur name I presume? how vain of him :-p

florascotia · 25/01/2014 14:34

OP I don't know whether this info would help: however it sounds, in origins, the name Evelyn has nothing to do with 'evening'. It is a version of 'Aveline' which is, in turn, a version of 'Ava'.

Way too much overthinking
I wanted Evelyn for DD, for your reasons and because it was my Granny's name. But DH is Adam and this forum vetoed it!

Starballbunny · 25/01/2014 16:46

Is never have made the connection and what's wrong with a bit vain.

DD1 has DH's surname and my name as her middle name.

Evie/Eve is lovely. I have trouble with Evelyn in full purely because she was my unspeakably boring Great aunt.

DD1 is called after the chatty GA with a brain.

Cinderelephant · 25/01/2014 20:36

At first I read this as Dawn being your sur name. I don't think that it would be a problem at all.

CormoranStrike · 25/01/2014 20:44

He is massively overthinking and Evelyn is gorgeous.
