Sanity Check on Name

Hi there,

I need a sanity check on my absolute favourite girls name: Evelyn. Perfect because she can be Evie as a baby, Eve as a teenager/adult and Evelyn when she is old. A classic name that will grow with her...

... however my name is Dawn and my partner thinks there is a certain amount of vanity involved in the naming (Dawn and Eve both being times of the day). He is likening it to Dawn Jr. Also the baby is due around my birthday, July. So we may share a birthday as well.

We don't even know what sex we are having yet, but I just wanted to check the general opinion before sticking to my guns..

Thanks in advance

I honestly don't think anyone else would make a connection between the two names! Evelyn is lovely.

MrsOakenshield · 25/01/2014 20:46

I would not have made that connection in a trillion years. Evelyn is lovely - I always liked the way Brendan Fraser pronounces it Evalyn (rather than Eevalyn) in The Mummy. And the shorts are all nice.

I think he's overthinking things somewhat. Smile

I would never ever make that connection, how bizzare!

I love Evelyn and all it's variants. Eve was nearly my daughters name but ended up being the middle.

About the birthday thing, its totally out of control and I don't think anyone would think anything of it. My July baby was due a week before my birthday and ended up 4 days after instead.

Could it be that he doesn't like the name and is clutching at straws to find a reason to not use it rather then say he doesn't like it and upset you?

Even if you pronounce it EEvelyn and not EVVelyn your DH's objection is daft.

FWIW, I always thought it was EVVelyn for a girl and EEvelyn (as in Waugh) for a boy). I am Irish and all the Evelyns I know are EVVelyn, never EEvelyn.

If you were thinking of Aurora then I would pause, but what he said about vanity is really odd.

There are many cultures where children are named after parents and other relatives as a matter of course.

I never would have though that in a million years he is overthinking for sure. Is he looking for other reasons because he doesn't like the name do you think?

This is a non-issue.

If anyone raises it, you just say the truth.

Which is, 'yes, we're aware of that, but it's not why we chose her name. We just chose her name because we like it'.

Conversation over.

My grandmother was Evelyn pronounced Eeev-lyn. I think both ways are usual. I know it can be a male name, but it does sound very girly! Don't think anyone would name their son Evelyn nowadays.

NorbertDentressangle · 26/01/2014 15:03

Is there any chance that your DP really doesn't like the name but doesn't want to say so outright so has concocted this excuse hoping you'll rethink?

mathanxiety · 26/01/2014 15:15

My granny and one of my aunts were known as Evie, pronounced EVVie. One was Evaline (EVValeen) on the BC and one Evelyn.

I wonder why he would object to you wanting to put a little bit of yourself in to your daughter's name!

mathanxiety · 26/01/2014 20:33

I wonder if he is a little jealous of your pregnancy and the attention the bump and your condition receive?
