Help me find a boys name...

I am going to be really fussy, dismissive for ridiculous reasons and probably sound like an arse on this thread. But I am really stuck. We've had a girls name set for a few months and I am still happy with it. But the boys name.. we keep going off them.

I need help.

I don't want anything common, in both senses of the word.

Our list thus far has been:
Jackson
Deacon
Brodie
Caleb

And I liked them all at first, and now I hate them. I think they sound chavvy. I have a DS with a top 10 name and thankfully he goes by a lesser used NN anyway, but still, I don't want to repeat that. He's one of 4 in his year.

HELP!

I really like Grey but can't use it as my cousin has recently adopted and used it.

I would feel awful calling a little boy Indigo. Or Bluey.

It's funny how when you know someone an unusual name becomes normalised - Indigo raised my eyebrow at first but Indy is how I know him and he's a lovely lad so I don't even think about it any more. It's so hard choosing a name but try not to worry too much about what people think as, if you love it, everyone else will just get used to it.

My B&Sil called their son William 11 years ago and I remember thinking it was SO unusual and I didn't like it at all…. Now it's so popular and I can't imagine him as anything else. One of my DD's is Ava, a name that I had adored long before it became popular (or chavvy as it is often described on MN) - it's the name of my three I regret (??) the most but I still think, when I say it aloud, that it is beautiful and it suits her so perfectly. It will probably date her in the future, today's Caroline or Louise, but it is her name and that's it. Does that make sense???

Juno77 · 21/01/2014 13:12

Indeed. I have this thought and absolutely agree.

Indigo I really don't like, though I quite like the NN Indy.

I did ask DH about Indiana but he thought it was too feminine. I reminded him of Indiana Jones, he wasn't convinced.

Even though I know it becomes normal after a while, I still need to be totally comfortable with it.

That should be forester btw not forested bloody phone!

Juno77 · 21/01/2014 13:37

Dexter is such a good name. Shame it's been ruined by a serial killer.

I also love Gunner but DH laughed at me.

I think that Caleb is lovely tbh.

You seem to like surnames as names.

What was yours-if you've changed it?

Your mum's, GM's maiden names?

Juno77 · 21/01/2014 13:47

Oh none of our 'family' names would be suitable, and even if they were I wouldn't be keen.

I didn't change my name when I got married.

Gunner is cool! Keep slipping it into conversations maybe he'll come round Wink

AngelaDaviesHair · 21/01/2014 17:32

Spelt Gunnar, usually-perhaps your DH would prefer it that way?

Face facts OP you love chavvy names.
Embrace what you love.

I can't. Mother is a head teacher and will kill me if I choose Axel.

Malachi and Caleb are both old biblical names and you like those so maybe have a trawl through some others?

Josiah
Ira
Cyrus
Gideon
Levi

ViviPru · 21/01/2014 21:37

Face facts OP you love chavvy names.

Haha took the words out of my mouth. Although I would never use the word chavvy on MN. Oh No.

Juno77 · 21/01/2014 22:29

Josiah - joe. Boring.
Ira - seriously? No.
Cyrus - billy Rae/Miley
Gideon - bloody awful

I think Beckham, surname, not really popular and a whiff of the chav about it.

ThoraNomiki · 22/01/2014 08:53

Don't let your mum name your baby - she had her time. Also as a head teacher she will find reason to hate any name.
Smile
You seem to like American-style names. Check their Top 10-500 list?

ToffeeJungle · 22/01/2014 10:39

Leon

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 10:46

Beckham Grin I don't think so

Leon is a hitman.

Mother has a very clear idea on what is chavvy Wink I am not letting her name the baby! But I do care what people think, else I wouldn't be worrying. I am more concerned with the future of the child; people judge you by your name and the first thing they see on a CV or college application is your name.

I hate to admit such snobbery, but if I see a CV from a 'Charles' or 'Thomas', I will think more of them than a 'Dean' or a 'Beckham'.

The US list isn't that different to here. Other than a few random ones like Wyatt and Landon. It's very plain.

I think I will have to accept it, plain is better.
