Help me find a boys name...

I am going to be really fussy, dismissive for ridiculous reasons and probably sound like an arse on this thread. But I am really stuck. We've had a girls name set for a few months and I am still happy with it. But the boys name.. we keep going off them.

I need help.

I don't want anything common, in both senses of the word.

Our list thus far has been:
Jackson
Deacon
Brodie
Caleb

And I liked them all at first, and now I hate them. I think they sound chavvy. I have a DS with a top 10 name and thankfully he goes by a lesser used NN anyway, but still, I don't want to repeat that. He's one of 4 in his year.

HELP!

Isabelle is the popular version.

I think it sounds like you're being rude because you're yet to thank anyone for any suggestions.

I'm still racking my brains but Cohen is a lovely name. Go for Cohen.

Isobel is v common here in my wee Central Scotland town

Always make me think of Isa the wee gossipy wummin from Still game :)

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 21:26

Isabelle is even less popular! Only 23 of those last year.

mum2bubble · 22/01/2014 21:27

forgot to say - I like Isobel Smile

IneedAsockamnesty · 22/01/2014 21:27

It is a lovely name, but check the rankings for

Isabel,Isobel,Isabella,Isabelle as they screw to the numbers somewhat obviously this only matters if popularity is very important to you either way.

The thing about popular names is they tend to be nice.

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 21:28

Yes, Isabella was number 42.

That must be what you are thinking of.

To me it is the equivalent of James, Harry, Thomas, nice enough but a bit safe.
Isobel, Isabella, Bella, Izzy, Belle, I seem to hear it everywhere. My Mum is in her 50's and every other friend or colleague of a similar age is Linda, Lynda or Lyn. I imagine Isobel to be the same.

HeeHiles · 22/01/2014 21:32

Raoul?

RoseHoney · 22/01/2014 21:32

Oh dear god.

Please do not call your child Gustav or Ludvic.

Theonlyoneiknow · 22/01/2014 21:34

Isobel is à nice name but not at all what I was expecting given how hard it has been to find à boys name you like!

I believe the child makes the name,

IneedAsockamnesty · 22/01/2014 21:37

Looking on the list I can find for 2013 it's really very very interesting much more movement of names than I've seen happen before,

Violet has gone from just dipping into the top 100 to 10,I'm rather glad I changed my mind about using it and didnt let you lot talk me out of pandora.

therunnawaybride · 22/01/2014 21:48

I have an Isabella but Isabelle/isobel is more popular by far here! And I preferred bella to izzy as a nn.
You wouldn't like my sons name though it's a classic which at the time (2006) wasn't very popular...now it's top 10 Hmm

soontobeslendergirl · 22/01/2014 21:50

I only know one Isobel, her brother is Archie - any good?

soontobeslendergirl · 22/01/2014 21:55

Juno I give you

Aubrey

Fabian

I am in same position. Girls name is set. I wants to name future ds something classic yet uncommon. Having read the entire 2012 ons list I've decided my name holy grail doesn't exist.

Classy names seem to fall between 'incredibly popular, same as 5 other little boys' or 'sounds like they'd get a kicking at boarding school.

Lots of names scream chav to me too.

Having spent too long on MN I've lost all perspective on what names are popular in real life and what names might be odd.

I like Brodie from your list, especially as you're Scottish.

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 22:20

Really runaway? Where are you? Just out if interest.

I'm less bothered as there were only 33 registered last year, so the child will not have a lot of other Isobel's in her age group.

haven't read through the whole thread but how about

Brogan
Magnus
Crohan
Malachi
Dermot
Deirmud
Seamus
Finnegan
Finnerty

notso · 22/01/2014 22:51

How many Isabelle's and Isabellas though?

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 23:02

Isabella - 141
Isabelle - 23
Isobel - 33

Even in the grand scheme of things, 141 isn't that many. And it's a different name (albeit similar!)

Theonlyoneiknow · 22/01/2014 23:11

Have you got a middle name for her OP? Or for a boy?

Juno77 · 22/01/2014 23:13

Yes for both.

Delilah and James.

OP posts:
soontobeslendergirl · 22/01/2014 23:27

well, unless you fancy the initials B J then you had probably better strike off Brodie :)
