Saffron or Thora?

I've made threads about both these names recently and both got quite a positive response though not a huge response. I think if there were lots of people who hate them they would have been more vocal (see recent Kyle thread!!). However I thought I might get more of an idea of peoples opinions if I compared the two!

So which do you like best and why?

Saffron because it's unusual and pretty.

I really dislike Thora but then I'm not keen on most old lady names and they seem really fashionable at the minute.

TheDoctrineOfSanta · 10/12/2013 20:21

Saffron.

Because of Thora Hird

BunnyLebowski · 10/12/2013 20:23

Saffron.

Because it's pretty and Thora just, well, isn't.

ChicksyBurtVonnugget · 11/12/2013 08:41

I know a stunning and wonderful Saffron.

Theonlyoneiknow · 11/12/2013 09:25

I prefer Saffron to Thora, its a prettier name.

Beeyump · 11/12/2013 09:36

I actually like Thora! It sounds strong, if you know what I mean.

TheBunsOfPanettone · 11/12/2013 11:28

I much prefer Saffron.

akachan · 11/12/2013 12:00

Thora!

Because - THOR!

manicinsomniac · 11/12/2013 12:31

Saffron is really pretty. Thora is ok.

birdybear · 11/12/2013 12:33

They both sound like margerine.

RaRa1988 · 11/12/2013 13:04

I couldn't call a child Saffron because it's the name of my favourite Indian restaurant Grin - but aside from that, and assuming you don't have the same issue, definitely Saffron over Thora! Thora's too old-ladyish.

WowOoo · 11/12/2013 13:06

Saffron for me. It sounds nice shortened to Saff or Saffie.

DingDongUriGelleryOnHigh · 11/12/2013 13:13

Saffron is the cool girl. Thora is a stubby little thing with glasses.

hawkmcqueen · 11/12/2013 13:27

saffron and Saffie is a Super nn

sonnieboo · 11/12/2013 13:31

Thora - beautiful, feminine and works in many languages.

Saffron - harsh, masculine sounding (to my ears) and not very elegant.

AngelaDaviesHair · 11/12/2013 13:36

Thora is rhyming slang for turd. Just so you know.

BananaHammocks · 11/12/2013 18:17

Wow! I was convinced Mumsnetters wouldn't think Saffron wasn't a 'proper' enough name! I stand corrected!

Saffron definitely appeals to me more, I just though Thora has the combo of being both more unusual and more of a proper name.

I think I am being self-conscious as I have a particular group of acquaintances who have all gone for old lady names and I feel like unless it suits a granny it's not allowed at the mo!

I'll think i'll proudly go for Saffron......... if my OH agrees......... and if it's a girl!

Saffron

snowed · 12/12/2013 18:30

Thora reminds me of Thora Hird. How about Thea?

MidnightRose · 12/12/2013 23:07

Love Saffron. In Spanish Thora ( spelled Thorra) means Bitch and is used as a very derogatory insult.

AmIGoingMad · 12/12/2013 23:11

Saffron

moominleigh94 · 13/12/2013 10:35

Love Saffron, it's on my shortlist for if we have a girl :)

OKmum · 13/12/2013 23:17

I like Saffie as nn - so Saffron!

Theonlyoneiknow · 14/12/2013 08:34

If you like Saffron what about Safiyah?

Theonlyoneiknow · 14/12/2013 08:35

Or maybe it should be Saffiyah?
