What's your mum's name?

I met a five year old Jacky the other day. Same name as my mum.

Everyone's always so obsessed with naming babies after their nan's generation, but I reckon naming them after your parent's friends is much cooler.

Nigel, Mark, Colin, Mike
Jacky, Cheryl, Angela

Hilary

I heard a little boy being called Hilary a few weeks ago. Might be making a comeback.

My mum is Alice. I love that name.

Her side of the family has 2 names which have, thus far, been used for alternate generations: I have my granny's name, my mum has her granny's name, and so forth.

It's a good thing she got her maternal grandmother's name, because her parental GM was called Danielina, coming from an insane old Scottish habit of giving your DD her father's name with 'ina' on the end.

Another Hilary here! SM Valerie, MIL Karen. Friends - Catherine, Janet, Carolyn, Marianne (which I love).

tyaca · 29/11/2013 15:04

Mary rocks. I was friends with a Mary as a child (I'm 36). It's one of those Head Girl type names that DH is crazy for (Nancy, Janet etc)

SIL is Hilary and DH is Colin. I've never quite had the nerve to ask MIL what exactly she was thinking ....

OK - different track. Enid Blyton school story names...

90% of my DM's friends are called Mary (but they're all Catholic school teachers, including DM, so go figure). She used to hang out with Rhona, Trish and Joan, but they fell by the wayside while the Marys are still around.

MIL is Heather. Friends' mums are Patricia, Elaine, Maureen, Susan.

HenriettaMaria · 29/11/2013 17:32

Only had boys though! Rats! In France you can use Marie for a boy Wink. Our surname begins with M; otherwise I might well have had a Mary.

Profondo Wasn't it Mary, Queen of Scots who went to France with 4 attendants all named Mary. Your mum and her friends made me think of that. Smile

Keepthechangeyoufilthyanimal · 29/11/2013 17:36

Christine and MIL is Elizabeth

tyaca · 29/11/2013 17:40

Surgeon'smate, i reckon our mums hang out in the same circles.

Christine is very much of its time, isn't it? Though I know a 8yo Christina.

MIL is Penny.
