I like it but is "Mel" an inevitability I just have to accept? I don't really like it.

Can anyone think of any similar names like Melissa that I may be overlooking?

Alyssa?

I know a few Melissa's and only one is a Mel (and she's in her 30's).

Most just say the whole name "Melissa" and one is a Lissy (but she's only a toddler.

Nice name & not too overused.

I love Melissa! Don't think Mel is a given - you'd probably come up with your own nickname.

JumpingJackSprat · 19/11/2013 18:01

I like Melissa. What about Issa? I knew one once. I also like Lissy.

evertonmint · 19/11/2013 18:03

The Melissas I know are always Melissa. However, Melanies are always Mel.

carben · 19/11/2013 18:43

I always liked Lissa as a nickname.

Alisvolatpropiis · 19/11/2013 20:18

I knew one who was indeed always Mel to friends.

Think her family call her Lissa though. As well as Melissa.

HoneyandRum · 19/11/2013 21:56

I knew a Melly

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 19/11/2013 22:00

I like it.

However, dombe prepared for Mel, just in case. DD1 has a nickname, a shortened version of her name, which I hate. I thought I would be able to influence it by insisting on another NN shortened version but no. No no no no. Think Lizzie vs Beth for Elizabeth, that sort of thing.

Astarael · 20/11/2013 03:16

I know three - two are always Melissa and one is Mel [helpful]

AngryBeaver · 20/11/2013 03:19

I know a little Melissa. Her family call her Missa, or Missy.

Spaghettinetti · 20/11/2013 11:36

Melissa is a lovely name with a variety of attached nicknames (Meli, Lissa, Lissy etc). My name has an obvious nickname which my mother and I both hate and to be honest people have very rarely attempted to call me by that name, I can probably count the occasions on one hand and I'm 30 now. However, the last person to use it was my midwife in a text, so I'd better set her straight...I don't want to be in labour thinking 'stop calling me x, it's not my blo**y name!'

Northumberlandlass · 20/11/2013 11:41

I don't particularly like it I'm afraid. But I LOVE the name Lissy

VisualiseAHorse · 20/11/2013 11:43

My SIL is called Malissa, with an A not an E.

Very pretty.

plum14ble · 20/11/2013 11:50

What about Larissa - similar but different and not as likely to get shortened.

UriGeller · 20/11/2013 12:05

I'm with Northumberlandlass.

Felix90 · 22/11/2013 00:03

My oldest sister is called Melise. I've never come across any one else with her name! It does get shortened to Mel sometimes but not that often.

sleepingbeautiful · 22/11/2013 01:48

I know 3 of varying ages, and 2 are always Melissa, and the other has a surname based nn. None are ever Mel.

Other names not mentioned: Melisande; Liss; Lisanne; Eliana; Elodie; Juliana; Merrie; Meredith; Merryn

OrangeFizz99 · 24/11/2013 18:01

BlackberryandNettle · 24/11/2013 22:24
