Yey, my BFF's little girl was born this morning at 11am. Just recieved the text and a question "last minute decision to call her Poppy, is it right or am i new mummy crazy, were going to call her Alice".

She is 11 days overdue so Poppy was not on the name cards. Really don't know what to advise her. I like the name but she is obviously picking it because of her DD's time and date of birth. Thoughts? BTW she approved my sharing this with you all. Said i would get back to her this afternoon.

I think it's a lovely idea

Poppy Alice is a good fit too

amyshellfish · 11/11/2013 13:35

I wouldn't. Might go Alice Poppy though that's quite nice.

eurochick · 11/11/2013 13:35

I think it's really lovely.

nicename · 11/11/2013 13:36

I like Poppy. It's not short for anything or a nickname for anything is it? It's a nice 'special' name with such a lovely meaning.

kelda · 11/11/2013 13:36

Poppy is lovely.

BeaWheesht · 11/11/2013 13:37

I'd go Alice poppy

SirChenjin · 11/11/2013 13:38

Poppy/Poppy Alice is a great name - and what a lovely meaning. Tell your BFF many congratulations, and to go for it Smile

Weegiemum · 11/11/2013 13:38

I'd go Alice Poppy. Like my Dad and ds share a birthday, and ds has my dad's name as a middle name.

Shallishanti · 11/11/2013 13:39

hmm, I don't think I would - you dont know what she will think about the poppy thing, especially not in 15-20-30 yrs time. Today is ds's birthday and tbh I wish there wasn't a national day of mourning/remembrance on his birthday.
But congratulations!
And I hoped you observed the silence Wink

Middle name with be Margaret after her late DM.

I love the name but am a little concerned when people find out her time and date of birth they will think it is a little contrived. Or will they?

amyshellfish · 11/11/2013 13:40

I think its contrived

RalphGnu · 11/11/2013 13:41

If the circumstances of how she got her name were explained to me, I would think it lovely.

LadyMetroland · 11/11/2013 13:44

Brilliant idea! Tell her to go for it.

Rosa · 11/11/2013 13:45

I think its lovely Poppy Margaret... Also it has significance.

noblegiraffe · 11/11/2013 13:45

Are they honouring a particular serviceman who died? It seems a bit weird if they just thought it was a nice connection, like Holly for Christmas. And a bit morbid to name your baby after a memorial for a lot of dead people.

SirChenjin · 11/11/2013 13:46

No, it's not contrived. It's like saying that if you are born in April you can't be called April, or born at Christmas you can't be called Holly. Poppy Margaret is a lovely name, they both go very well together. If I had been born on Remembrance Day I would be very proud of the name I am thankful that my parents didn't name me after Lady Gaga with whom I share a birthday however

EspressoMonkey · 11/11/2013 13:46

Just recieved the official birth announcement text, she is Alice Poppy Margaret XXXX. Good choice i think. Thanks for your posts.

Lovely names Smile

pmgkt · 11/11/2013 13:47

Plenty of people name Xmas time babies holly so why not poppy. Plus it's pretty

NanooCov · 11/11/2013 13:49

I think Alice Poppy Margaret is lovely - well done your friend on an excellent choice

Caip · 11/11/2013 15:59

I think Alice Poppy Margaret is lovely too

TheNunsOfGavarone · 11/11/2013 21:38

I'd go for Alice Poppy.

I'm not all that keen on the name Poppy and particularly if it's her first name I'd wonder how she'll feel in a few years' time about the tradition of wearing poppies (for the record I wear one but I know quite a few people who prefer not to). It may become more political in future... then again maybe it won't.

How about choosing a name with associations of peace? Here are a few:

Shulamith
Paloma
Olivia/Olive/Livia
Irene/Irena
Jemima

Plenty more out there in internet land.....

TheNunsOfGavarone · 11/11/2013 21:39

Ooops I didn't finish reading the thread, Alice Poppy Margaret sounds good!

Bowlersarm · 11/11/2013 21:39

Oh, I would have said Poppy.

toffeesponge · 11/11/2013 21:41

Their choice is perfect.

Honouring the day without putting a huge burden on the child. Potential for teasing from idiots, for example.
