Dirk

I am 32 weeks pregnant with DC2. Me and DH are having just the same battle we did over names for DS1 (in fact, worse, because we used up one of the VERY few names we agree on, on him...).

My husband loves the name Dirk. I'm not so fond of it at all. Is there any kind of variation or derivative of Dirk that might possibly please us both?! All ideas welcome! Thankyou Smile

At school, Dirk was friends with Warren and Curtis. ( I think they go together quite well).

I knew a very cool Berg. (Sounds like Dirk)

Dirk rhymes with Berk. HTH.

tory79 · 01/11/2013 22:07

All that comes in to my head with that name is Diggler I'm afraid! So Im with you and I'd steer well clear!

No suggestions though

SuzySheepSmellsNice · 01/11/2013 22:07

Dirk as in Diggler? Just no...

Rowlers · 01/11/2013 22:07

Dirk will get smirks.

readyforno2 · 01/11/2013 22:08

Makes me think of Dirk Diggler from Boogie Nights.. Sorry

puntasticusername · 01/11/2013 22:09

See. THIS. EVERYTHING you guys just said? THIS. But will he be told? Will he buggery.

Hmm, maybe I'll show him this thread when he gets in though, perhaps it'll have more impact coming from mn than it does from his beloved wife...

Thanks guys Grin

Just like Keith Richards is the only person to make 'Keith' cool, Dirk Bogarde is the only person ever to get away with being called Dirk.

Do you like Germanic style names? There are loads of good ones.

Thurlow · 01/11/2013 22:12

No, sorry. It's just quite harsh and I can't think of any good Dirks.

puntasticusername · 01/11/2013 22:13

There is also - as I am endlessly told - Dirk Gently.

I quite like Curtis actually, thanks for that idea!

Hadn't thought about the Germanic names angle actually, thanks, I'll go have a Google...

Diggler. Sorry!

nobutreally · 01/11/2013 22:17

Dirk Gently would be what I'd think of. And whilst he is, imo, cool ... nah.

Can you persuade him towards some cool Scandi-wegian names?

nobutreally · 01/11/2013 22:19

(check out the unisex names on that link too. Loki - now that is a cool name)

Rowlers · 01/11/2013 22:23

Dieter?
Felix?
Max?
Lukas?
Kai?
Karsten?

BaldricksTurnip · 01/11/2013 22:27

No!!! What is your husband thinking??

Dirk...

Dirk Benedict (Faceman in the original A Team, for those old enough to remember), I thought he was hot. And Dirk Bogarde was, of course, beautiful. Dirk Diggler slightly less good, I'm afraid.

All by itself it's quite a cool name. And I don't suppose many children in his class will know who Dirk Diggler is. Hopefully.

Clawdy · 01/11/2013 22:45

Only one Dirk for me - Dirk Bogarde. He was gorgeous. Great actor and writer too.

puntasticusername · 01/11/2013 22:47

Yep, it's stupid. The other thing is it really doesn't go with our surname. Oh, and it's STUPID Grin

DH's other suggestion this week is Ralph...not as in Ralph Wiggum. As in, King Ralph. Apparently.

But after reading a few threads on here, I've been inspired, and am starting to have friendly thoughts in the direction of Barney...Thankyou all!

I'm not a fan of Dirk, but if your husband really likes it I think it could work as a somewhat quirky nickname for a longer name, like Frederick.

Just saw your last response. I like Barney much more than Dirk!

Giyadas · 02/11/2013 02:22

Dirk Strider! That name is very popular with dd and her friends thanks to Homestuck. Maybe Dirk is destined for a revival.

TinyDynamite · 02/11/2013 02:24

Curtis is ten million times better than Dirk Diggler.

Since you're asking, how about Calvin? Or perhaps Conrad?

TinyDynamite · 02/11/2013 02:24

TinyDynamite · 02/11/2013 02:25

Sorry for multiple posts - stupid phone!

Giraffeseyelashes · 02/11/2013 03:21

Every time I hear that name, I think Dirk the jerk.

SantiagoToots · 02/11/2013 04:26

It's actually worse than you believe, on the continent it's pronounced Derek.

KateCroydon · 02/11/2013 04:31

Doug (las) after Adams?
